Put Us Out Of Our Misery!

Did you spell grammar purposely wrong to get me to come back?

I'm confused I need a break from these forums :p

Not to get you to come back but as a little self-depricating joke to let you know just how not very serious I was being. I spelt "typing" incorrectly too, as part of the same joke. IMHO we could do with more levity in this thread, or at least less seriousness.

But although those mistakes were deliberate, I do make a LOT of typos in my posts, so the humour IS truth-based :( (all the best humour is, IMHO)

Edited to correct an accidental typo :(

The OP team did get the money from prepaying people (i recon they needed a lone from the bank this customers lone is sneaky).
That people pay for the materials needed and that all the development was don is just a plain lie.
Most surprising to me is that it is not a down-payment of about 50% but he full whooping 100%.

Yeah, sure. We have millions of USD lying around from the preorderers on our account.
How could the project have worked out with just 50% of the money when even with the full 100% we are way beyond a break-even?
We did pay way more than just a few dollars from our own accounts. We're happy to regain our loss with the second batch.

Well i am happy i am a sceptic i never put my money in.

Thank god not all from the community were like you.
If they were, the whole project would've never been started. If we wouldn't have gotten enough interest and preorders back then, we wouldn't have continued the whole project.

I can fully understand why people would NOT take the risk to pay us in advance for the device. But the funny thing is that most of those only tell us we did do bad and make it sound like it is the most easy thing to take on such a project without having millions of USD handy.

I distrusted it when the so called bank fiasco happened.
For me it was prove to be a scam ore just a sign that these people did not have a sound business plan.
Well we know now it was the second.

Oh, I see. You're a business plan expert and would've done all what we did here way better?
Cool. Why didn't you offer your services back then instead of telling us we did do bad?

According to the business plan:
We did have a plan, and that did work out well. It just took way longer than we planned, because of a lot of things happened we didn't see coming (often also due to not having big knowledge about such big projects).
Our plan was to produce an OpenSource handheld with participation of the community.
People were (and are) helping us for free to fullfill this plan. We never were experts in what we were doing and we never claimed we are.
Yes, there were too many delays which should't have happened. There were a lot of things we could've done better. But you know what? It's easy to tell afterwards.
If you have no idea how long such a development takes, it's hard to estimate something. Even with asking the companies that produce that stuff: They usually tell you it won't take long and then another month is over.
If we ever produce a second handheld, it would be way easier since we now A LOT more about case moulding, designing, etc. and can surely plan everything out way better.

There is one interesting thing though:
Because we're just a bunch of amateurs behind such a huge project, with is being funded by a community and no bank or investor, we stirred up a lot of interest.
The next issue of the Handelsblatt in Germany (the biggest financial magazine in Germany out there, read by all the managers from big companies) will have an article about the Pandora - as this is the first time they've seen such a big project with that interesting funding and idea behind it.

It's unusual in our business world today that people will preorder and wait for so long. That no investors or banks are involved. That a bunch of people creates such a device without having much knowledge about it except for knowing they will try to solve every problem on their way there is. That the community can actually TALK to the developers behind it, follow every step.

If it was just a normal device made with the help of Investors, that magazine wouldn't have cared about.
They do because it happened the way it did.

Let me tell you once more:
I'm not happy with all those delays (nobody is). It did cost me more money than I expected (I have to pay about 500 EUR each month to get everything running, so each month without delivery is a 500 EUR loss for me).
Yes, we could've made a lot of things better if we would've had more experience.

Yes, I can understand why a lot of people would not preorder and wait for the device. They might really need the money and couldn't possibly risk to help out with such a risky project.

However, I CANNOT understand why people try to tell us we shouldn't have taken the preorder money or only part of it, etc.
If we wouldn't have done it this way, the Pandora would never exist.

If you are unhappy with the project, don't give us your money and that's it. If you believe in the project and want to support us, pay us so we can produce that thing and follow what is happening.

It's as easy as that.

Does "Ner ner ner ner ner!" translate into German?

I can see how a certain satisfaction could be had from going "Look, see, I told you {something bad} 6 months/a year/ 18 months/whatever ago, and look! It STILL hasn't {the good opposite to teh bad thing}!!! I WAS RIGHT!!!"

Of course, each time "We're very nearly there now - just two Months More" comes around, that puts a possible limitation on the ability to go "Ner ner ner ner ner!" or "I told you so!". What happens if Pandora actually SHIPS? No, seriosuly, what then? Most, if not all, opportunities to crow about ones perceived better judgement suddenly collapse. How can one say "Pandora will never ship" after 3895 have shipped? How can one say "I knew I'd lose my money if I bought, so I kept my money and look at you all now, still don't have your money AND don't have a Pandora, haha!" when we have our Pandroas?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be on OpenPandora's side any more than I'm trying to be agin them - it's just that it seems to me that the "Ner ner ner ner ner!" satisfaction must be about all that can be gained, and each incrimental step towards the project's goal means fewer opportunities to stick the tongue out at the community. IMHO, take it as a sign that things look worryingly positive for OpenPandora. You've got naysayers worried that they might not be able to naysay much longer - so they'd better do it now while they can still crow about it! :D

I like what you said and it renews my interest a little more in the project, and I respect you more for it. I hope the Chinese can produce the cases within the next few weeks after CNY, but if they cannot, you(or another of the team) needs to say they can't and take the time to type it up in an official blog post, not spread out somewhere after the fact in the forum. These kinds of posts also didn't help i'd imagine:

The boards are being tested - and looking at the posts I saw from Michael and craig, the last MK seems to be

error-free so the mass production could start soon.
Neither did threads like this one started by people left wondering.

Enough already I guess. Ed, I am sorry you're losing 500EUR per month because of the delays. Hopefully not too long now.

BTW Mods, why is profanity-laced name calling from a few fools allowed to happen here. Heated discussion is fine, but Kyosys did not deserve any of that.

It does quite nicely with the use of our beloved umlauts and ends up as a "Nä nä nä nä nä!"

I think you missed a lot of ! and some 111 and maybe even an oneoneeleven.

However...comming to the "what does the "I *told* you"-person does is quite easy: He/She/It immediately starts ranting about other things, so noone can remember him of things he told us before that where incorrect: "It's too expensive now", "Screen resolution is too low" "...and look at this tearing! Totally inacceptable! Not even good enough for spreadsheets!". So basicially, it's a winning street as there is always something that is not absolutely perfect...and IF then there's always the personal opinion ("Look I *always* said it would look *way* better in glossy pink!")

Erm...damn...I didn't want to post and now I did :X

Anyways er.... Hail to the penguin and thanks for making this device possible, even though it was a rough and not always pleasant ride. I seriously believe we're almost done ;)

You could also switch to Firefox or Google Chrome, which has built on spell checking features.

It's funny that your surprised by being slammed by "fan-boys & Pandora Hugger", yet you come to a forum populated by said people and expect them to agree with your inflammatory comments.

I did not write that i was surprised by being slammed by Fan-boys & Pandora Hugger and no i don't expect them to agree with me..
I did not even necessarily expect a reply, but was disappointed on the strong remarks,i do not think my remarks where inflammatory sceptical yes.
And yes after that i got a bit Cheeky in teasing the Pandora huger a bit.
And getting abused because of spelling mistakes is weak, just come with a good argument on what i write and i enjoy listening to anybodies point off view. And yes i do a spellcheck now a day's.
Still there will be some mistakes left (spellcheck helps but is not a miracle worker).

I guess i am a little to frank for some people and can be a little blunt but never rude.
If you think that i am rude that i say Craig does lie.Well let me say i hope he will put his pink classes of every now and then.
My remarks where made by observation and if you do not agree fine leave a comment that is OK that is what a form is about.
It is interesting to see different opinions anyway.

PS thanks for your reply.
Have a nice day

Well, it's not rude if you can in fact PROVE that he is lying.
If you can't it's accusing without even having a prove, and that is definately rude.

You can say you didn't like how craig handled everything.
You can give constructive criticismn and try to tell us how we could handle things better in the near future.
You can even say you hate craig because he's not the type of person you do like.

That's all subjective.

However, accusing him of being a liar when this is just your personal opinion is just not the things you should do.

Which means any day day "Told You Sos" should be switching to "What, that old thing? That's so obsolete now that it's not even worth discussing"?

My favourite think about retro/emulation is, it never goes out of date :)

Great post as always Ed! Your vids are straight and to the point, as are your posts, and for that you are "The Man"!

Will you post a translation of that article when it becomes available, I would love to read it. This project has and will always be a unique business model, and for that reason alone, it is very interesting to many. Many don't see the fact, that without everyones sacrifice, this project wouldn't be possible! Growing up, I lived thru the Apple and Microsoft's fairy tale stories, and always found them to be a huge insperation. When I see how Apple started with a few guys builing computers in a garage, and then to worldwide domination, it is truly a sight to see.

When I discovered this project 2 years ago. I thought, WOW, here is my chance to help those guys in there garage go from nothing to something. I've never personally been that interested in anything in my life from a business perspective, but I truly belive that this is a one of a kind item, at the right place at the right time. The same things that make it so wonderful and inspiring, also make it a hair pulling experiance on certain days!

I've hung in from that first preorder day to the present, and have thought about calling it quits on several occasions, but everytime I do, a new video, pic, post pops up that leads me to belive any day now. So hopefully everything is being done to insure that the next month goes as smoothly as possible, and that all those who have stood behind this project with there time, money, and support will be rewarded soon! Until next time!

For one I wrote the spell check thing, because you claimed to have issues with people picking on your spelling. I gave a solution.

English may not be your first language so some things may be lost in translation. Your comments are in-fact inflammatory in the sense your intent was to stir up some action, emotions from the people on this forum.

I personally don't care who you think is lying.

What on earth made you think this? I ordered on day one. I'm not getting anything for free.

My bad, I can't find it now but the same thread that mali said he wasn't in the 1st batch i thought u also said it. I know it was someone that floored me. The free pandora thing just came from the idea that some news sites were gonna get one and that a lot of people (myself included) think that should include you. Anyways, Its great you are in the first batch, I look forward to your thoughts on it when you get one and to your car kit :) sorry for the mix up.

Craigix did say he intended to send one to PandoraPress (presumably to Gruso) but this would be one of the developer/news/whatever ones and totally not to keep, or so I would expect.
