A PATENT may allow Sony to ensure that no game would be playable from any console other than the one in which it was first read.
Joystiq is reporting that this patent is the source of the many rumours that will mean as much to gamers as DRM is for music fans.

The technology would allow an authentication code to be read and then rendered unreadable, making the software unplayable on any machine but the one which first read it.

But this has caused considerable backlash from the gaming community. While many are aware of the double profit companies make on pre-owned games, this would ensure the death of trading games between friends and even going to a friend's house to play a little multiplayer.

No less than Ken Kataguri himself is listed among the inventors, which makes it look like this is a move that came from very high up. It has already been pointed out that many Playstation users have had to replace their console, surely this would leave us high and dry in that event.

While the PS3 hasn't been expressly mentioned in the patent in English or Japanese it would be the obvious place to employ this new technology, regardless of how little gamers will appreciate it. Between this and the DRM scandal, Sony could be looking at a serious drop in interest in the PS3. You can be sure you'll see more on this as it develops. As gamers, we can only hope that modern technology won't undermine the tried and tested barter system.

Jeez, Sony is just doing their damnedest to make sure I don't buy any of their products again. I didn't think I'd see the day when Microsoft looked like the good guys, but here we are. 360 + Revo for me.

dont think they will do this.... would be the stupidest mistake ever if they do...

Well, I have over 80 original games for my PS2.

My PS2 starts to have read errors (as did the first-gen PS1), probably because it's one of the first generations PS2... (looks like ALL Sony consoles have problems with the drive after a few years).

If this happens with the PS3 and I have to replace it, Sony has to replace all of the games (at least, if you are in the EU).

So... I would surely send all of the 80 games to Sony to get them replaced. I wish them a lot of fun :)

Hate to sound clichéd, but this will only hurt the norms. It'll be cracked anyways, so it's pointless and just makes them lose money.
But if it's true, Squenix had better develop FF for another console...

doubt it'll be used. there are toooooo many issues that stem from this kind of BS.

props to KK for coming up with something like this, despite it being incredibly retarded.

sony will make a huge mistake by doing this.........and they will lose me (and many others for that matter) as customers :(

Welp, whatever...I wasnt plan on getting that crap anyways......im never buying anything Sony again...3 of the Sony CD Players messed up, PS2 hardly worked...Xbox 360 all the way...

i don think they even could do it if they wanted, at least in germany theres a law that you have to be able to resell things you buy.
It would be logical when they want to use it for preview discs / demos /trials, would make perfeckt sense for that.
But for commercial games?
Highly unlikely.

It sounds very similar to how Gamepark used their DRM protection for downloaded games to me. and Gamepark didnt replace my commercial games when my GP32 packed in. This is why I hate DRM.

Seriously though, this can never be implemented as described. I know people who live between two different countries and have a PS2 in both. This would mean they could only play a particular game in one. If Sony do this, they are dead to me.

well the first flaw in the original arguement was that companies make double profit on the sell of used games. Show me this. Last time i checked it was the stores like Gamestop making the profit, not the developer. So in fact, it could be this LACK of double profit that would make them want to stop the sell of pre owned games, most of my games for my Gamecube, PS2, XBOX are pre owned, i would definetly NOT buy a PS3 if this is the case.

i agree with angel. as much as i want a ps3 i dont think i'll buy one but things can change and hopefully they'll realise that this thing just wont work. i'm sure there'll still be the hardcore playstation people that will buy one but i think i'll just put the money into upgrading my pc if this doesnt change.

It almost looked like Sony had seen the light ...
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/11/08/so..._region-coding/

Despite the PSP-bricker and the PC root kits <_<
It almost looked like they were going region free!

And then they come up with the next logical DRM step using rewriteable drives ...

UseIt&LoseIt(tm)

Dammit! If I wasn't so naive I should have seen that one coming.
Hmmm.

I really don't think Sony would be so stupid to implement such technology. News would spread so fast in the gaming community that it would poke a hole in their boat and they could end up sinking real fast. There would all of a sudden be warehouses of their units and no one buying. B)

I just posted a topic under Other Consoles titled 'Sony Settles Out of Court'
Has a link in it that is a good read for any PS2 owners that experienced the 'read error' problems.

Just a headsup :)

Jesus Christ... Not like I was planning on buying any of the next-generation systems anyway, but holy fuck, that's goddamn stupid. It looks like now if I ever do decide to buy a next-generation console, I'll have to go for the X-Box 360, cuz I'll be damned if I'm using that powerglove rehash/remote control that is the Revolution Controller. Even without that controller, I don't like Nintendo's games anyway... I should just get a dreamcast and use it for emulation. Then I can play all the old systems I want to on one single system on the TV and then have my PSX and PS2 for the Sony games... that would be perfect... Plus I'll have the GP32 and GP2X for the portable, non-TV version of what the dreamcast would be doing. If Sony does this then they can forget ever getting my money again.

I think the fact that Sony is trying to keep a lot of people guessing and is playing it's cards close to their vest (kinda nintendo like strategy wise) means this RUMOR, may only be another smoke screen. Like notice how they keep saying very loudly that the PS3 will be "very expensive" which could have been their way of convicning MS to release the super expensive 360 bundle and the shitty alternate core system package that no one in their right mind would buy if they expect to ever own anything in the expensive package.

I think the main problem for Sony though is the fact that they want to use this BLU RAY disk so badly and there's so much talk from the movie industry about protecting their property. Because of this Sony as a partner in the development of the format gets linked to any idea related to it even if they wouldnt use it for games.
