Prototype case and Mainboard Assembly (small video)

As promised a few days ago, here is the video where I assemble the Pyra case and show you some details.

This case has been printed by a different company this time and cracks VERY easy (unlike the last print), so excuse a few cracks here and there.

ED, this is very cool! I laughed when the battery door broke. Good thing the finished cases won't be made of that stuff.

Two questions:

1) The speakers:

Why are they not simply populated onto the PCB? Isn't there a risk that the contact will get lost?

2) The stylus-slot:

It looks like there's actually quite some room available over there, e.g. for a thicker/longer stylus. Is this the reason why the stylus-holder is a separate piece? So it could be interchanged with a different piece for a different stylus size?

The membrane would instantly die from the heat of the oven.


Besides, they can't be populated (you can't solder spring contacts).


Don't worry, these are the speakers used in almost every major smartphone today - how often have you heard of contact issues here? :)

There's not really any space in there unless you rip out the 4G antenna.


The holder is seperate for the same reason it's seperate on the Pandora: You can't create a mould with such a tunnel :)

I noticed the nub caps have a compared big gap when moving around due it's design. Is there a way to make the gap between nubs and case smaller? Looks cheap somehow.

Looks like the pin that holds the shoulderbuttons can break. Is it supported by a top half coming from the other case-half?


Wondering if the pin can be made a bit bigger along with the hole in the shoulders without any issues?


I like the logo with the middle part broken off.

No, it can't. Unless you open the unit and use some excessive force to do that, though, because otherwise there will be no force applied (since you can't push directly on the pin).

Even the good ol' Nokia mobile phones of the 90s already used loose speakers and microphones with spring contacts, as long as they fit well they won't cause any issues.
 
Looks like a very sensible evolution of the Pandora design to me.  I was a bit dubious about that logo on the lid, but seeing it now in the (virtual) flesh really makes it look neat!

A couple of questions: I guess you couldn't show us the hinge piece given the fragility of the 3d print, but when and how does that get inserted?  Do you in fact, like on the Pandora, attack the hinge before inserting the PCB?  Or now that the inside lid is removable without diassembling the hinge, you could insert it from that side?

And: How do those speakers resonate?  I recall there's space for them to resonate in the design and give a nice balanced bassy sound, but given they're squished up by the PCB to make the contacts, do they resonate through the PCB?
 
Has anyone worked out what to do with the space on the front edge, to the right of the SD slots yet?

Obviously you can't have much because of the antenna just behind it - but something to break up the cheap-looking split line around the case would be good. Maybe a bit ot textured plastic? or a sticker?
