Possible Ports Of Independent Games

Hi!

We currently had a small discussion about independent games that would be nice to have at release-time of the pandora.
Open-source games are something that will come with time passing, but closed-source independent games are somewhat different, as they can only be done by the original devs or perhaps very trustfull volunteers.
Thatfor we as a community should contact those devs to show our interest on a port.
I wanted to start a thread to collect url's and contact data of fresh and cool independent games, discuss if they are possible and finaly start a poll for seeing wich game would be of most interest for us. Maybe craigx and co would even see the poll as a reason to contact some devs, ask for interest and eventually send them a dev-board... but that's not the main reason for the thread, so please stay on topic.

So, here are the games we have already mentioned:

Gish:

Gish has a link to a support-mail-field. Use it to ask for a pandora port :)

World of Goo:

They have a contact-link on their page.

Braid:

Look at the reviews linked on their page. Braid would for real be a killer-startup-game for the pandora. Can't see a way to contact the dev other then blog posts. anyone found a way to email?

New addition by me:

ZeroGear:

It seems to get an awesome kart-racing game. Since ogre already has an opengl es-backend, it should be relatively easy to port. They have a forum to get in contact.

Audiosurf:

Defcon:

ask for pandora-port in the blog-comment or anywhere else

Phun:

For contact, use the forum

So, tell me what other indy games you think would be great startup-titles, discuss the games I've listed and please, please, please, spend some time in contacting the dev's. The more of us ask, the better!

To the mod's: please don't fuse this thread to the port-wishlist, it really has a different topic!

first thing that comes to mind would be audiosurf

alltho I would prefer something more then just a casual game, just like Zerogear you said, or perhaps a shooter

Thanks!
I've added Audiosurf to the list above.

Braid and Audiosurf would pretty much guarantee the Pandora loads of media attention. Especially if they were ready for release.

cosurgi, this topic is about closed source (comercial) indy games
ouch sorry. I was too fast to add the games I liked. A nice collection - should I edit that post and remove them?

Please resize your pictures so they find the standard forms width. At the moment, people have to scroll back and forth to read your post.

Definitly Darwinia and Multivinia. Defcon would be cool too. Basicly anything from Introversion.

And they are a UK based small company too, that makes Linux ports for all their games, so chances are pretty high I think.

Otherwise The Independant Gaming source is a good site that has lots of intereisting projects in their news and database:
http://www.tigsource.com/

P.S.: "The Underside" would be cool, but it appears to be written in some windows only game dev suite (but they have a java version of some sort, which might make it portable after all).

Steam has a decent catalog of indieish games, some free. that would be pretty nice.
I don't think we will get the hole steam-catalog, so please, look for some special in there and post them here.

Btw: Did anyone contact some of the devs yet? Please, do it for yourself and the community. Show there is interest.
I contacted all of them, but didn't recieve response, yet.

The more will ask, the higher the chance.

Since the Pandora has a Touch Screen (and mouse support). Why not a port of Crayon Physics? It's a very fun little game. And has been recognized and suggested as one of the free games people should check out in the now defunct gaming magazine, Games for Windows. Link: http://www.kloonigames.com/blog/games/crayon

Crayon Physics is kind of odd though software wise. I was doing some reading on Wikipedia, and the engine the game uses is Box2D which is open source. But the game, Crayon Physics it's self is not. At least not open source from what I see.

And guy who made Crayon Physics is working a sequel of sorts Called Crayon Physics Deluxe. And it to be much better that the first. And will allow the usage of Free Formed shapes. link: http://www.kloonigames.com/blog/general/an...-physics-deluxe

thanks for all the nice game-suggestions.
I added all mentioned games + phun, cause it might be an alternative to crayon.

Had to remove embedded screenshots because of consistancy. I'm only alowed to use a certain number of pics in one post :(

You could make a single picture with several screenshots (each of them with a label what game is it) on it, for example in GIMP...

We have to be realistic here. Whilst on one hand audiosurf would be ridiculously awesome, you also have to bear in mind:
  • It is written ONLY for windows.
  • It requires directx and does not use opengl
  • It needs a pretty powerful pc, 600mhz arm is not going to cut it, although I think the graphics card is good enough. To make it usable on the pandora it would need optimising out the wazoo.
For the above reasons, I doubt the devs would have much interest in porting audiosurf to the pandora unless it became HUGE.

Games more likely to be ported are things like Darwinia where:
  • The game is old so it has less hardware requirements, and the devs can squeeze more money from the game by reselling it for the pandora.
  • There is already a linux version, using opengl. This massively simplifies porting.
  • The game company producing it is fairly small and likely to listen to users asking for a port.
Either way I don't think any game producer would commit to a port until the Pandora is already released and has sold in fairly large numbers.

Personally I don't think bombarding the developers with email is going to help very much. This is really more of a thing where the developers of the Pandora have to contact them "business to business".

Especially in the case of Introversion I think the best would be if CraigiX would take a working prototype with him and just visit the guys (since they are in the UK too).

Phun would probably really struggle on the pandora, as it barely runs on my 1.6ghz machine at home :(
(Runs nicely on my work PC though, so I agree it'd be a fun toy to use the touchscreen!)
