Ok, I fail at the Internet, so this has probably been answered before but I couldn't find anything through search!

Getting far too excited about my Pandora which should arrive next week, and want to set-up my 32 + 16GB card ready (Class6).

Has anybody come up with a decent file structure for their incoming Pandora, I want to start chucking a ton of stuff on there ready and wondered the best way to lay it all out on the cards was????

Thank-you Please

On sd.. Format it fat32 style

Make a directory 'pandora'
in that make directories 'menu' and 'desktop'

stick pnd files in one of those (menu or desktop)

I've been sticking emu roms in /roms/SYSTEMNAME ie /roms/atarist and /roms/scummvm

keep your eyes open for patches as well.. Should be a codec pack along soon, and I think we goofed a couple minor things in the shipping firmware (doh!) that might confuse a few apps, so likely we'll have a firmware patch pndfile along soon :)

maybe I should code a .. 'there's a new firmware available, want to fetch it?' thing...

Sounds a great idea!, like the PS3 but without the annoying disabling of everything whenever an update is available

Can I suggest you don't do that, and instead read how to set up an Angstrom repo instead?

Why would you suggest that? The PND system is aimed at the user who has no clue, or doesn't want to fuzz with it. If you want you can still go to the repo's and grab what you need there. But most importantly. We are talking firmware, not OS patches. Why would you put firmware patches in a OS distro?

I am 'populating' a sd card now, haha is it strange that I am even excited about this.

Firts thing I noticed though is that a 8GB card is not going to cut it, might have to ask for a 16 or 32GB for my birthday.

For ease of use and convenience. Most people know how to handle software updates on linux these days - you let the system handle it for you. The standard mechanism for doing updates of the OS can work just as well for updates to any firmware thats needed, too ..

EDIT: compared to a well-working repo system, .PND-download and use is *NOT* easier. For starters, where do I go to download the .PND, and why should I even have to know?

It should just come through a standard repo.

Just a quick question, if I may. :)

Does it *have* to be FAT32? The cards I've been preparing are ext2 (I have no need for FAT32 compatibility, so I just use that on mine. :p). I don't have to go back and change it all, do I?

what's wrong with getting everything from the Pandora appstore?

free software, pay software, firmware, o/s updates all from one place and provided by the hardware supplier. i hear things like that are quite popular in many quarters and give users some sense of security that the software wont trash their beloved hardware etc etc

oh and if you give me numbers whereby you can prove that "Most people know how to handle software updates on linux these days" i'll eat my hat. I'll give you "many linux users know how to handle linux updates" but certainly not "most users".

In case you didn't know, Just a little fyi, the forum search sucks. Use google instead.

E.G: sd card format site:www.gp32x.de

not that I was easily able to find the answer to your question that way either but it's way better than the forum search.

btw, color me jealous of your 48 class 6 gigs. :p

I'm in the same boat as Bosbeetle, 8 certainly won't be enough. Looks like I'm in the market for more, guess it's time for someone to start another "cheapest memory you can find" thread.

Does not have to be fat32, just a good default fornormals ;)

ext2 on a sd ur USB drive is fine ;)

I can't fly over to craigs I'm afraid.. My sitters are going away so all of my vacation is to my baby girl :)

I thought that would be the case, but it doesn't hurt to be sure!

Wonderful - thankyou very much. :D

As you should do. Family is important and young family even more so.
Thinking no less of you as your contribution has been a vital piece in the whole Pandora jigsaw. Thanks.

However, not as important as the last piece. That honour goes to the postman(or lady) that knock on my door and says, "This was too big to get through your letterbox". :p

Let's leave the formal upgrade mechanism aside. Djw and ED have a lot of ideas. I was referring to a notified of sorts so some updates can be popped up, but the install mechanism van be decided. Ie: some immediate patches may be pnd - one click and done! Codec pack, same thing likely. Repos are easy or brutal depending on the ui software and depandancy handling etc, but discuss in another thread when things calm down :) for now the blogs/etc are notified enough.

A lotof future things are yet to be determined, by community, after usage experience by everyone to get a feel..

I hope NTFS will also be supported without too much hacking. Ideally it will be built into the base distribution.

FAT32 drives me nuts with the 4GB file size limitation that it has. I capture HD programming OTA with MythTV and when I travel I like to take a few unwatched files with me. 1 hour shows are 6 to 8GB in size. I really don't care to re-encode the files. (Assuming Pandora will handle it fine... and if my lowly 1st gen Atom netbook can handle playback with VLC, I am optimistic that Pandora will handle it fine too.)

I could use EXT3 I suppose, but I (gasp) use Windows 7 a lot too, and it is nice to have a universal format that can be used on all my machines.

Thanks for that :)

just to rub salt in the wounds, I have a 32GB Class 6, 2* 16GB class 6, 1* 16GB Class 4, an 8GB Micro SD, 2*4GB Micros SD, and a few smaller SD cards. They seem to mount up from cameras and camcorders!!! I've had to stop myself buying another 32GB SD for the Pandora so I can have 64GB from the off.

Cost wise, up to about 16GB, it doesn't seem to be much off a pound per GB I don't think. The 32GB one I have is a Verbatim, I think it was about just under £60 (google shop it and it should come up)
