Pandora Rebirth Competition (2012-01-09)

I have my first beta tests ready for some users to try, PM if interested.

Beta tests as opposed to alpha tests? So, that means you're just about done? :p

Call it whatever you like ;-) Most of the core of the game is done, it needs more content, but the idea of the test to get ideas and opinions before I go dedicate going a paraticular way. Maybe some other goods ideas come from the testing.

Okay, HP is going to be nowhere near ready for the contest, so I'm considering either the PIM application (mentioned in a few threads), or an update to one of my Windows games - The Collector - with higher res graphics, and Pandora/Linux support (obviously). It's a non-violent (well, there's pushing and shoving :) ) team-based collect 'em up.

An incomplete mockup of The Collector Plus:

The gameplay will probably remain similar to the original, but with improvements to make the game more competitive and interesting

That's assuming I can find time for anything. Here's hoping

Wow! I know I'm a dozen pages late on this but I'm loving your Rebirth Signature graphics. Cool idea ... off to watch Star Wars.

Thanks may88. Erico is responsible for the excellent "frozen pandora" graphic. Feel free to make use of them as you see fit :)

@pmprog

So cute!

This is so awsome! :D

I hope every following competition (there will be one each year, right? ;) ) will be oben to everything as well. So many differnt things are popping up, it's just amazing!

I know what I would try to do, but I definately need a Pandora for that

I mentioned it a couple of times, but it's finally time to officially announce it:

The Pandora Rebirth Competition - Deadline: End of March 31st (UTC)

I think it would be more fair if the end date would be 1 month after all people of the 4000 devices have their device. Now a lot people don't have a chance to take part.

I tried downloading DJWillis's toolchain, and I seem to be getting a corrupt file. Is anybody else having troubles with it?

(I've since gone to http://www.gp32x.de...53 - and am currently following the instructions there.)
Well as you probably already noticed you are much better off with Ivanovic's toolchain (the one you linked) or sebt3's toolchain (this one).

DJWillis' one is just very outdated and no longer recommended (in fact if you are used to that, have a look at sebt3's which basically is a heavily updated version with new libs, compiler and scripts).

Both toolchains have their own share of advantages and disadvantages the main ones for Ivanovic's being a more recent compiler (CodeSourcery, while sebt3's is based on OpenEmbedded) and the lack of need for an environment-setup (or admin privileges). The main ones for sebt3's would be the ability to build firmware images and a few handy scripts to ease the whole process of creating a PND.

Effort of those two guys has been shared in the past so those toolchains are not much different anymore (apart from the compiler suite), go with any, you can't make a wrong decision really.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. Ivanovic's toolchain is working well for me. I'll probably stick with it - if it's not broken, don't fix it. :-b Ivanovic's toolchain seems to have a .pnd script maker, though I haven't messed with it yet. Just confirming the simple test programs will compile and run on the Pandora.

You could always set up a dev environment using one of the toolchains just mentioned, and recruit a couple of testers to run your code on the device. It's a bit of extra messing around, but it's been done in the past. :)

I made 3 games ('til now!) for the pandora and never owned one. :) I haven't even one ordered. :D There are much nice people wanting to test your games and applications. ;)
