One bad dump can spoil the whole pile?

I wasn't sure if this was support or gen talk. It is an issue I am curious about and I am sure very easy to answer.

Ok so on with it then.... Let's say that a Pandora owner has a emulator with many roms working on it fabulously. Let us also say this Pandora owner is a pirate and is trying to find another gem-rom to add to his/her emulation treasure chest.

So with that^ typed the question is.. figuratively.... If a rock of schist had been placed with other precious rocks of gold could that one rock contaminate the other precious rocks and render them worthless? Therefore the coveted treasure chest spoiled.? A leprosy of filing so to say.

Does one bad dump ever spoil the whole pile?...sniff sniff :p .. I recently had this experience with a working emulator containing 50+working roms.I discovered that after downloading a few more roms some weeks later with the same file format, that suddenly that emulator was rendered non openable.   <_< .. Is this common?

Yes schist is a rock. Thank G.d  I do not have Leprosy and I feel sad for those who do. In no shape or from was I attempting to make fun of anyone who might be afflicted.

No I am not trolling. Another guinness lathered please :p

I do not own a solar powered Pandora with a schist casing either. B)

Could a rom or associated files contain a "virus"?  If that's what you're asking?...then yes?  Usually viruses are targeted towards more "fruitful" targets such as Windows machines, but I suppose that we'll see more viruses targeting ARM-powered devices now - it's inevitable.

Edit 1:  That's just my common sense talking and NOT my technical sense.  Once I get one of those I'll let you know.   :p

I believe he'e asking if one bad ROM, or even a group of bad ROMs, could render the emulator, or even other good ROMs, inoperable. Which, to answer your question, in my experience of emulation, as well as logic, it doesn't seem likely to me at all that bad ROMs could corrupt anything else at all other than themselves, (unless, as Franko said, there's a virus in them, which again, is quite unlikely.) You said you had a group of 50+ good ROMs; and suddenly got some bad ones? Have you tried them all out before to make sure they actually work? Also, what do you mean by, "non open-able?" Does the emulator not run ROMs, or does it not run at all?

It depends on how the emulator enumerates the ROMs in your collection. If it uses some sort of heuristic or database driven scanning to generate names etc, and has not been particularly well written, then you could in theory either lock up the scanning process or cause a segfault by placing a carefully corrupted ROM image in there.

So yes, you could contaminate the whole pile. With leprosy. Which, btw, from personal experience, is hilarious.

I've had an emulator "stop loading" known good ROMS after it failed loading one bad ROM.  This was on Not64 on Wii homebrew, however, but yes it can happen, not often but there are times when it can occur.

I can't think of any sane situation where a bad ROM would corrupt otherwise good ROMs.

Maybe the bad ROM is stuffing up the emulators loader and preventing it from displaying everything properly (or at all), in which case you just delete the bad ROM and all should be fine again.

Or maybe you loaded a bad ROM once and the emulator made some save game or config file changes or something that is now stuffing up other ROMs, in which case you can probably delete the bad file.

In both cases, the problem is directly with the bad ROM files and once they've been fully purged your other ROMs should continue to work just fine. The question is simply how much needs to be cleaned up. It may be easier to simply blow away the emulator entirely and reinstall it with the known good ROMs.

"ARM" is not an Operating System. So this doesn't make any sense.Or you just like to compare fruit with languages or something off like that.

Otherwise: what WizardStan just said.

The emulator stopped running...could not open it even after rebooting 5x. I removed the several roms that must of been the culprit but still no luck. Then I rid the Pandora of the emulator and appdata file. Restocked minus the 3 boogers another 3x and still no luck.

Used the adjoining card but amazingly the same problem occurred....i am dead aim serious as a cafe coronary in the pub after eating shepherds pie.

To make a long winded story short...I reflashed and now i am status quo.

I never would have guessed such a thing could happen. The place this rom snot came was from a reliable neighborhood.

I am just glad things are sorted now but I was flabbergasted.

Hum, maybe just clear the appdata folder of the emu, it may have crashed and let its savestate in an bad shape, too bad for the emu to start again when it read it.

Hacked-together Angstrom linux for outdated OMAP3 family chips on a tiny root partition is probably one of the least likely virus targets I can think of.

The only other correlation I can surmise is that the 50 roms in this emulator were pre firmware update..1.52<1.54.

The last 3 were with 1.54.

Tornado alley hit my Pandora I suppose.

lets talk about fixing the problem, clear out the appdata directory. redownload the PND.. Add the roms one or two at a time to the ROM folder to figure out which one may be causing the issue.

@trashy...did exactly what you suggested...done deal. Took a few go at's though.

I just don't get it. I think it was those 3 cursed roms from helio  but why the entire emulator was included in the process is beyond me. Every suggestion  and recommendation posted makes perfect sense to me.

Done after several attempts. Works now.
