Official Firmware V1.2.1 Released

Yesterday I made two videos of the GP2X Wiz with the new firmware version installed (1.2.1).

Quake 1 via Interpreter gpquake/tyr-quake

Quake 2 via Interpreter ioquake2

As you can see in the videos, the tearing problem is now MUCH less than before.

Today I'm going to make a few more videos of various things. I will also upload these to my YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/Wootson1983

Just finished the upgrade from firmware 1.0.1 to 1.2.1. All went as others described, messed up Upgrading Firmware screen, but the progress bar moved. After a while, reboot and all is good. Looks like a nice improvement on the screen tearing. Only problem I have noticed is I can't mount the nand any longer on my Linux box (before upgrade I could). I'll have to try windows and see if it shows up there.

mmm. I can still access NAND from ubuntu, same as before. also I didn't have any messed up screen while upgrading and the whole process was faster than expected (just a few minutes).

I tried windows, still could not get to the NAND. I went and tried the firmware upgrade again, this time the Upgrading screen was normal, but I still did not get the Complete screen. The progress bar was all the way across, and I gave it 5 minutes like that before rebooting. Everything seems to work except USB to the NAND. The correct screen comes up and makes it looks like the NAND is available, but no response at all on the linux box in dmesg.

I upgraded and the "upgrade done" screen came up before turning the wiz off.

have you tried using a different card for the upgrade?

I used a 2gb microsd with sd adapter and nothing on it except the files from the zip.

edit: today I also had a little free time and tested lemonboy, which works without problems on the new firmware.

as soon as I have time (maybe tomorrow) I will test some scummvm.

Trying a different SD card did not make any difference (blank card with only the firmware files on it). I still don't see the Upgrade Complete screen. I'm starting to wonder if it has something to do with the fact I bought this Wiz when they first came out. Oh well, at least it still works except I cannot get to the NAND through USB any longer.

I performed the update fine on my Wiz and I've had it since before the Wiz was released so I doubt that time of purchase is the issue.

That's good to know. I'm just not going to worry about it for now.

The only problem I have is with the touch screen, only works in a certain portion of the screen.
Wait a minute, a may have found a solution...

Found the solution:
1. Recalibrate
2. Restart the wiz
3. Recalibrate again, this time when you test it should get slightly better
4. Restart the wiz
5. Recalibrate again, this time it should take up the full screen.

Basically the solution is to restart a bunch. YAY

Hi !

Just downloaded and copied the content of the .zip on the root of my 16G SD.
I started my wiz while pressing R-button, but it stays forever on the black GPH screen.
My actual firmware is 1.1.0.

Any idea ?

----------Edit :
Tried with another 4G SD, without success.

I had the same issue. I reloaded 1.1.0, made sure everything was ok, then reloaded 1.2.1 and it worked fine.

Well I finally got the upgrade to show the complete screen. Originally I went from firmware 1.0.1 to 1.2.1. I then tried to install 1.2.1 a 2nd time directly over 1.2.1 and still could not get to the NAND. This time I loaded the 1.1.0 firmware and then went to 1.2.1 and finally saw the Upgrade Complete screen. Now I can get the NAND to mount and restore the built in games. Thank you for all the help and info.

I will buy a non-sdhc SD.

This is because the NAND changed from 1.0.1 to 1.1.0.
You first need to upgrade to 1.1.0 (it's also a fullflash, so you can downgrade) and then to 1.2.1

Excellent update, screen tearing is practically gone from all SDL games (including Giana's Return, :) !). No more need to flip all those pixels every frame, hooray for dynamic linking!

Is it changes to SDL that have done this or just the fact that the refresh rate has been doubled or something? I am not sure where I read it but I am sure I read that the refresh rate had been increased somewhere...

iirc the only thing they changed is the display refresh rate (somewhere about 120hz with this FW). this reduces tearing greatly but does not remove it completely.

Personally, for a perfectionist like me, this new update has made the Wiz even better. I can barely ever notice the tearing. I'm especially happy that it fixed this weird vertical line I got in GPFCE...which I guess is the equivalent of tearing?

I've noticed all the tearing is gone is prboom & alexkidd emulators as well. So that's a major +++ for me!

At any rate, I'm super excited about this firmware update. Feel like it's breathed new life into my wiz! ( ^_^ );;

Formatted in fat-16 did it. I installed directly 1.2.1.

Hi, I just got my Wiz today, and I'm having the same problem as you, after loading the firmware to my sd card and holding the right bumper at startup, it gets stuck on the GPH logo, it sat there for a good 20 mins while I held the button in, I tried formatting to fat-16 in ubuntu and I tried a few different file systems and it either gets stuck on the GPH logo again or it will go to a black screen after the gph logo and not do anything, I tried 2 different sd cards.. Any help?

Are you sure you extracted the files to the ROOT of the SD card and not to a directory?
