Is there anyway to get developers to program more for the gp32? It doesn't seem like this is going to happen, but there is no reason not to try............ I think if there was a competition for the gp32, then people will want to make more software for the gp32. The gp32 is a(in my, and i'm sure a lot of other people's minds)the gp32 looks and(just dpad wise)controls better. I want to get other people's thoughts on this....

P.S. No offense towards gp2x lovers out there. It is an awesome system... :)

My guess is that if any of the XGP models are fully compatible with the GP32 and if they actually get released and catch on a bit, developers might regain some interest. Since the GP32 is not being made any more, there is no influx of new people to create interest and excitement, which in turn causes developers to look for something else.

:) I see what you mean, but what do you think of the competition idea?

It could work. Only one way to find out :)

There are also ALOT more gp32's out there than gp2x's. If a developer wants to reach a bigger audience
the gp32 is where it's at. I also think the homebrews never pushed the GP32 to it's limits, except maybe some
emulators.

I think we should all donate to one account, so we could save up money for the prize(s) :) , unless you have a better idea. ;)

I know dude :) , so many things could have been done with this machine. We never reached full speed snes and there was a lot of room in the casing for hardware hacks....... ;)

The GP32 had a great run even though there are more of them out there I really doubt a lot of people are still using them any more. I use mine every once in a while to test new releases. I would love to see some more stuff come out for it but I would rather donate my cash towards gp2x coders atm. The sad thing is the gp2x will be in the same boat soon. These devices only have a limited timeframe for releases as technology advances new devices catch a developers eye and they move on.

Good luck with your idea though.

I still <3 my gp32_console

I don't know whether the GP2X will end in the same boat that soon. There are lots of reasons why people embraced the GP2X so eagerly, mainly because it came as a direct improvement over the GP32:
  • SD cards for storage versus the feeble SMC
  • Linux as OS
  • Firmware 2.0 with lots and lots of nice features
  • Easy to setup and use Devkit
  • TV-out
  • Dual core 240mhz+ as opposed to 144mhz+
  • The already established community, and then some!
  • Shitty stick as opposed to decent stick :)
Sure, a new system may show up in a couple of years, but the GP2X already is all that a hobbyist could want, and will be harder to knock out due to the beforementioned list of fetaures...

Let's not forget that there's still a possibility for a playable and fully compatible PSX emulator, though it hasn't happened yet, which means that for a new machine to become "necessary", it'd have to be able to at LEAST potentially emulate N64 games, or maybe even all the way to Dreamcast, and I think that's quite a bit of a way off, at least for a reasonably priced unit.

So I think the GP2X has come to stay for a while. If anything, a MK III could include SDHC (It was HC, wasn't it?) support for SD cards with a potential capacity of 32 GB, and an improved directional pad/ joystick. Personally, I don't need anything more than this right now. I'm perfectly happy playing my old C64 games and some well-crafted homebrews for now. If there's a full hardware upgrade in two or three years' time, I'll gladly get that as well, since the buttons on this one will probably be worn down to the nub. Luckily, the skin on my fingers is thicker now than when I was a kid, gleefully wearing deep, open sores on the insides of both palms due to the joystick on our C64 (After this, our mum bought us the ballheaded sticks.) after frantic attempts at the olympic gold medals.

It will be replaced, in time, but hopefully by GPH themselves, with a compatible unit that doesn't need all manner of porting.

  • SD cards for storage versus the feeble SMC - SMC was the cheap and common media card at the time
  • Linux as OS - Has proven to be more a hinderance than an advantage so far
  • Firmware 2.0 with lots and lots of nice features - Scanlines are still there
  • Easy to setup and use Devkit - The gp32 was just as easy to set up thanks to the pioneers who set everything up (not gamepark themselves)
  • TV-out - Zoomed in too far on any TV that will not let you adjust it.
  • Dual core 240mhz+ as opposed to 144mhz+ - Dual core?? anyone using that second core yet?
  • The already established community, and then some! - The same reason the gp32 was a success
  • Shitty stick as opposed to decent stick :) - Yup its ok once you get used to it though

It will be a lot sooner than that. There are machines that fall just short of the mark already. Even the zodiac gives those specs a run for their money, shame about the stick on that also :(

The gp32 had a good 3 or 4 year run of homebrew releases, you cannot compare the machines directly as one is from 2001 and the other from 2005. I honestly don't think the gp2x homebrew scene will last as long, newer better machines are just around the corner. The Gp32 was unique when it came out but now even the original gamepark is bringing out 3 machines designed to compete and other companies are bringing out similar machines. This will divide the pool of talent even further imo.

I'm perfectly happy playing my old C64 games and some well-crafted homebrews for now.

First machine to come out with a full speed amiga emulator and the same setup as a gp32/gp2x and I'm jumping ship. That is still 95% of the reason why I upgraded to the gp2x.

Don't get me wrong I love both machines and the awesome homebrew games/emulators. but when you look at it, the gp2x isnt really that far a leap forwared compared to the gp32. Besides NeoGeo and Mame it still seems to be falling short on perfect 16bit emulation. Whether that is because of hardware limitations or unfinished projects remains to be seen.

Geez, I'm the new DaveC :(

Good maybe you could come up with ANOTHER joystick mod! :p Just kidding. :) There is a hack to run files from a usb storage device isn't there? I tried searching for it but couldn't find it. :( That is a good thing along with better battery life. ;) I guess I didn't know what I was trying to say there, but some people still play their gp32 and would love to see new things for it. This might also bring attention to the gp2x. ;) Happy gaming to all anyway! :) I will find a way......

I still prefer the gp32 over the gpx2 as it has much more batterly life.

I HOPE that gpx2 updates like drmd will be ported to the gp32!!

I'd like to see this too - however it probably won't happen.
I'm happy with drmd on the GP32 and drsms and most people will probably consider them good enough.
Apart from better speed and the merging of MD/SMS/GG, exactly what enhancements have been added since this release to the GP2X version? Greater compatibility? Could there be any other speed enhancements many to the GP32 version? Most games run really well already. I think Gunstar Heros is about the only game I've seen that slows down significantly.
