Exophase
Nothing good will ever come of Exophase.
WizardStan said:Over the years, there have been additions and removals from the x86 instruction set. Kings Quest 5 used one of these instructions that was added with the 486 to ensure it was being run on a sufficient computer. This instruction was later removed with either the Pentium or P2 . As a result, even if you install DOS and Win3.11 (or Win95), you cannot play Kings Quest 5 on anything other than a 486. I discovered this quite unfortunately not too long ago.
Point is that there are programs which cannot be run on modern CPUs.
The only instruction set that officially removes anything is x86-64. But that's a totally different operating mode and the CPUs still support the old modes.
There were some undocumented/essentially illegal instructions that were scrapped. Anyone who would rely on such a thing quite honestly got what was coming to them, although it's the fans who ultimately have to pay.
The only such undocumented/later removed instruction on 486 is the so-called cmpxchg486, but even then not all 486's support it and nothing later than 486 does. Since I've played King's Quest 5 on a Pentium I know it couldn't have been relying on this instruction, so it must have been something else breaking it. If it were really something like you describe I'm sure the game would have been quickly hacked by someone to fix it.
