Mame 106 Any Thoughts?

How do you get games to load? Every time I select a rom it boots me out.

It was mentioned before that that happens with the wrong romset you need the 106 and not the 54

Or you're asking MAME for an impossible video mode, e.g. using 2x scale which would result in a resolution larger than the maximum supported. The /tmp/pndrun<mame-something-or-other> file should tell you the exact reason.

@sarlix good work! I was messing on for 20 mins with various romsets and got nowhere!

Loads of these games have a resolution which cannot be scaled up x2 to fit the pandoras screen. A zoom function will probably be implemented at some point though.

What's the deal with romsets exactly? I know that earlier roms do not work with later versions of MAME (generally speaking unless there's been no changes to that game). But what about the other way around?

I have the 133 roms (of the games I legally own of course ;) ). Will that be ok, or should I start sourcing some 106 versions in preperation for my Pandora landing on my doorstep?

kaprikawn: You can use programs like clrmamepro and RomCenter to manage rom files. Or if your feeling brave you can edit them manually

I think that means I'll need to find a data file for this version of MAME. And I think I remember (it all seems such a long time ago!) that the gp32 and gp2x versions of MAME came packaged with a similar data file. Is that the case here, or do we need to find it elsewhere? I've just had a quick google for it but wasn't really sure what to look for.

Side question, what changes happen so that dumps stop working? Shouldn't they be full digital rom dumps that never change? I never understood this.

I think RomCenter comes with a selection of data files. If it doesn't have 106 - then you can download a 106 MAME build and direct RomCenter to it. It will then use that data file to check your roms against.

@Joshwaan2k

Nice photo ^^

Uh, they are 4:3 like CPS2. Problem is, that these games were made for CRTs with non-square "dot matrix". So in the Result they look widescreen at square-pixel Displays. Onto dots that are longer than wide, these Games look 4:3 without "scaling".
Onto the Pandora you need scaling to display it 4:3. Funny thing :Correct Pixels but incorrect aspect ratio.

Does Pandora Mame already have working scalers?

If the MAME 106 build has scalers I don't see why not...

I haven't found any scalers, and I've looked.

Then there was metal slug...

Edit: replaced photo with vid.

stevem -- going to work on pollish of the emu by chance?

(Or even some easy wrapper changes; make the sh-script detect an error return, or perhaps a really short runtime after invoking the emu (like 2s), and pop up /tmp/pndrun<foo>.out so the user can see whats up?

(And save keyboard mappings :)

Or just did a build and hell with it?

(did you just change the makefile and good to go, or..?)

That is why there should be a ROTATE 2X mode where the screen is rotated 90 degrees. Hardly "impossible". The Wiz does this. Then you can just map game buttons to the keyboard. No it would not be quite as comfortable but would still be better than playing on a postage stamp sized image or some crappy weird fractional scale stretch that looks ugly (and still be too small).

They "forget" because they werent. They were 4:3 with rectangular CRT pixels.

Look at any image of the real arcade cabinet, 4:3.
