hi, long time lurker, first time poster, i have been researching the open pandora for a while now and the multiple linuxes seemed like a cool idea! it was kinda disappointing to see that the open pandora cant run windows but its fine and here is where my question comes in. would it be possible to make a new linux with windows? i know normal windows wasn't work but if it was a linux windows os? that to me sounds like a great idea!

umm... what?

If you just want it to look like windows that can be done, but nothing can make it run windows programs

I think he's asking if it's possible to make Linux look and act exactly like Windows.
Short answer yes, have fun doing it.
Long answer, no. I doubt you're going find anyone to help you.

Even if you make Linux look and act just like Windows it's still not going to run Windows applications natively, There simply is no incentive other than to fool people into thinking you're running Windows when you're not.

well i was wondering mostly so i could play WoW but also ventchat with my guild buddies when im not on a raid or at my computer, i dont need anything like vista or 7 just some simple windows

VNC and programs like StreamMyGame are the only way to get what you might be wanting, Windows accessibility on Pandora. I also see you have many interests and a lot of chans.

sorry, outta luck here. Even if there were a version of windows that ran on the ARM processor (which there isn't, I'm not counting CE) the games/programs themselves would have to be compiled/coded a certain way to run properly.

EDIT: ninja'd, totally forgot about VNC & the like, good call.

1. If you want an OS with "windows," then you're in luck. The current OS build has a window manager which can act just like a full LINUX desktop.

2. If you want a linux OS that looks like "Microsoft Windows," our current OS is completely theme able, so feel free to cook something up that looks the way you want it to.

3. If you want "Microsoft Windows" Linux which runs Microsoft Office 2007 and Internet Explorer, well then you're just being silly, and it will never happen.

EDIT: Spelling, and yeah I wasn't thinking of streammygame and VNC either. (I almost went into a QEMU caveat, but then realized I barely even understand THAT)

WoW will not happen. Period.

Mangler is a opensource implementation of the Ventrillo client, so you might be in luck there. Provided it can be ported to ARM.

 Mhhh, well linux have many window managers (Gnome, Kde, Xfce, ...)
So we won't have to use console.
But Pandora won't be able to run applications built for Microsoft Windows 95, 98, Me *shiver*, 2000, XP, Vista *cold sweat*, 7, etc...
I hope that answer was helpful, I'm not sure to have understood your question quite well

I'm slow typer : ninja'd

EDIT 2 : The vengeance!
Pandora will be shipped with a lightweight internet navigator, but you'll be able to install firefox (wil probably be a PND packaged app).
IE8 is a native Microsoft Windows application.

oh that sounds fine then, i don't mind no WoW if i can still vent.

other question if it can't run WoW than what types of games can it run (NOT EMULATORS (their fun and all but im talking about normal games))?

Firefox & a host of other browsers will run no problem on linux (I think the one being included is midori). Flash support is currently a big MAYBE though.

There won't be many (if any) Commercial games if that's what you mean by 'normal'. There will however be a slew of user-created games (homebrew), of which there are always some real gems.

see here & here for some upcoming pandora homebrew games

If what you mean by "Normal" games are games that you can go into the local game store and buy. The answer is zero.

Pretty much anything you find here can be made to run on the Pandora. Please note that it doesn't necessarily mean it will. There is also this wiki page that lists games currently in development for the Pandora.

There will, no doubt, be tons more homebrew games once the unit gets into the hands of the public, since homebrew is what this console is all about. :)

If you really want to impress the ladies when you are on a boat, set the background to three wolf moon. You'll still need a good wifi connection or 3G for most of that stuff. Here is a list of open source games, many of which should be on the app store in time http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_open-source_video_games

Guys, seriously, do you not realize you're being had here? You're embarrassing me by association.

Ummm... honestly I think you need to look elsewhere for your fix. This is an open source handheld, which means homebrew games and emulators. If you're looking for large-scale, big-production games then the pandora just isn't your bag.

The purpose of the console is to play all the oldies and to be able to play your own and other peoples' homebrew creations.

Gameplay is what we're going for, not graphics. (To an extent)

Also, twice I've read "chan" and would like to know what that is. I could google it, but I'd rather hear it straight from the horse's mouth, so to speak.

EDIT: Okay yeah missed that last one. I was trying best not to make fun, but this is just stupid. Impress girls with your OPEN PANDORA? Time to break out your three wolf moon t-shirt and lard-ass gaming gokart.

Here's the non-emulated games I can think of:

Card games like Solitaire (I saw someone playing a GNOME Solitaire on the Pandora)
X-moto (Stunt bike game, more or less)
Probably some tetris games, Gnometris will probably port fine.
That one guy wanted to port Indestructo-tank, but he hasn't gotten back to us since my prototype of it, and I don't personally like the game.
Whatever I do. (I really want to write a bullet hell kind of game, but I haven't tried)
That one other guy is working on zeq2lite, some kind of fighting game based on DragonBall Z.
And of course Quake I, II, and III have been ported, since they are open-source.
Oh, and AssaultCube, I think, could be ported. Cube 2 / Sauerbraten would be kick-ass, but I don't think anyone's working on it yet.

Edit: "Chan" is an imageboard like 4chan. It's like a forum but with more porn and more users and more idiots.
The built-in Midori web browser should work fine with all chans, as long as they don't use Flash, Java Applets, or YouTube (which uses Flash). Then there would be a slight issue.
