Oh, and I know I'm not Jesus. Hell, I own a GP32, which makes me a bad, bad man.
Well, not per se, but for what I use it for.

You don't see how a company making money by buying from one country for next to nothing and selling with a lot of profit affects two countries (the country it's based in and the country it buys from) and thereby everybody living there? Are you for real? Follow that money-trail, what do you think happens with it? It goes from A to B and simply disappears?LHC posted on Sep 23 2004 at 11:16 PM said:I don't condone sanctions on these countries, although I'm not sure you can make the claim that we are benefiting greatly from their plight. I don't really believe in 'the economy' (that is to say, Company X making profits shouldn't effect person Y, unless they are in some way connected) however, and I don't support 'western society' gaining from this either. Indeed, this couldn't happen if the governments didn't control the economy.
I don't want to prevent people giving them 'a handful' of money, but I haven't deprived them of anything, so I don't feel guilty.
PS CapMag
You see I did.LHC posted on Sep 23 2004 at 11:42 PM said:Couldn't resist, sorry.
Countries don't trade with countries. Companies trade with companies. Hence, when Company X buys from Company Y through mutual agreement, nobody has lost out. Company Y agreed to sell for the price, noone has done anything wrong. Following that Company X sells on their stock to the public, who once again agree to pay the price.raven posted on Sep 23 2004 at 10:47 PM said:You don't see how a company making money by buying from one country for next to nothing and selling with a lot of profit affects two countries (the country it's based in and the country it buys from) and thereby everybody living there? Themselves. It is them that benefits from a companies success, through increased tax revenue etc.raven posted on Sep 23 2004 at 10:47 PM said:The government controls the economy? Who do you think governments represent when they force an embargo on another country?
If two people agree to something, then it isn't 'force'.raven posted on Sep 23 2004 at 10:47 PM said:It doesn't matter if a company does this or if this is done by a government representing companies. Money gives you the power to force other people to do what you want, individuals or nations.
I agree, but I have no idea how to do this.raven posted on Sep 23 2004 at 10:47 PM said:The way you talk you should either drop out of society completely (don't pay taxes but not a single benefit either) or you should try to think a little bigger. Nobody is an island, we all affect eachother.
You really seem to think companies and governments are two seperate entities, one honest and just and the other evil. Have a look at the USA elections, how does a president get to be a president, who sponsors him? Do you think it's any different in countries where this is not so clearly visible?LHC posted on Sep 23 2004 at 11:59 PM said:Countries don't trade with countries. Companies trade with companies. PS You can respond to this, but I'm off to bed now.
I do believe this, and I believe in a civilised society companies shouldn't benefit from sponsoring candidates, as it should be of no concern of the government.raven posted on Sep 23 2004 at 11:59 PM said:You really seem to think companies and governments are two seperate entities, one honest and just and the other evil. They blocked imports so people would "buy american". This way the money stays in the American economy, and the government benefits from this.raven posted on Sep 23 2004 at 11:59 PM said:Why do you think companies pay lobbyists? Why do you think government officials visit companies? Why do you think so many people working for the govenment also have, or get, important functions in the biggest companies in every country? Why do you think Bush (at a certain point) blocked steel imports from Europe?
The embargoes etc all benefit the government, as does the less unemployment. As if a company actually benefits from being so heavily taxed. Businessmen know a lot better how to run a business, and they will benefit a lot more through their own business tactics than the government (a) crippling the competition or (B) creating false competition.raven posted on Sep 23 2004 at 11:59 PM said:Governments represent companies (amongst other things), the embargos are placed because it benefits the companies. It's not just about taxes: if a company makes money they will hire more people, less unemployment, more investments by those people etc.
I'm sorry you are probably right here. Countries probably do trade with countries, but I was assuming that companies weren't explicitly denied the right to their own affairs.raven posted on Sep 23 2004 at 11:59 PM said:Countries do trade with other countries: if you buy our grains we will buy your cattle. These deals are made for companies but by countries, what do you think Bush is doing when he is trying to 'persuade' african countries to buy geneticly altered crops? Do you think he grows them himself?
No it isn't. The following situation is force:raven posted on Sep 23 2004 at 11:59 PM said:Don't get me started on two people/companies agreeing on something. It's quite easy to get someone to agree with you if they are totally dependant on your investments, even if it kills them in the long run. If you 'agree' with me because you know your country won't survive next year if you don't that's force.
I won't accept the blame for this. Anyway, I expect 'our' riches began when 'we' civilized 'ourselves' through true trade and 'they' did not.raven posted on Sep 23 2004 at 11:59 PM said:Not to mention most of these countries used to be occupied by us (again: 'us' being western countries). Their debts and our riches started back then.
I disagree with this. I don't think we do gain more than we invest.raven posted on Sep 23 2004 at 11:59 PM said:If you want to have this honest society where everything is honestly done by people trading with eachother without interference you would first have to give back everything that was ever taken by force or accept that someday it will be taken back by force. To ensure nothing is taken back by force we spend a little money on other countries each year, we got, and still get, more out of that than we invest.
Find something better to do.bringoutthegimp posted on Sep 24 2004 at 01:28 PM said:my wang almost got hard reading this shit thread
