Is The Plastic Case Design Open Source?

Leather is awesome to work with :) I worked as shoe repairer and saddler a few years ago and still have all the machines. I restaurated some machines I bought from someone who's grandfather was shoemaker, for a few bucks :D
mali if you say one more crazy thing that you've done before I'm gonna stop believing you.

I'd post a pic, but my workshop is..er.. not in proper condition for public photos, right now :D

^The trick is to scrap the keyboard completely, thus "tablet conversion" ;)

Instead of hacking up a pandora, wouldn't a beagleboard just do the trick for that kind of project?

^Where'd I get the charging circuitry, battery and touchscreen from? ;)

Touchscreen, is easy.. kit here https://specialcomp.com/beagleboard/order.htm

Battery and charging not as easy.. I did find a site for some ICs that could do the dirty work of battery charging, but not as easy I guess.

I'm working on a project at work, so I'm looking into getting a charging circuit for the beagleboard.

I guess the Pandora does have everything in a nice neat bundle.. I just don't want to tear mine up when I get it.

Hey, that's nice. Please share when you have something ready :)

Its just an idea that might never be realized, I don't know yet. It depends on how comfortable the clamshell is to use. I'm a total slate fan though(coming from PocketPCs and Nokias ITs), thus my idea of a conversion. It would also be a nice thing to show off and, if done right, easy to sell later.

You realize beagle + that touchscreen kit already costs more than the Pandora, and then you have to integrate them, and build a charging circuit, and...

That site overcharges for the beagleboard. it's $149 dollars from Digit-key and Mouser.
$149 + $149 = $298 still cheaper than the Pandora.. the IC for the charging circuit is prob no more than $5.00 worth of parts.

Putting it together IMO is the fun part.

About the charging circuit, I'll put up a schematic of what I come up with. It's months down the line though.

I agree, beagleboard is clearly missing the charging circuitry and battery support.
And spare parts like high quality touchscreen are hard to find at reasonable prices.

Okayyyyyyy
I want your workshop, it must be great to have all those tools and machines!
My only "machine" is a small dremel and I never used it seriously :p

*EDIT* uh!? Why is it posted only now?

I'm sure he kept the Machines just to wrap his girlfriend completely in black leather ;)

Heck, that's what I'd use it for.

Actually, all the old sewing machines are covered with WD40 on my store shelf. Just the large upper leather sewing machine and- I don't know the English term, the machine you use to make the edges of the leather thinner (Schärfmachine in German)- are usable, right now. I'm doing most smaller things by hand with a leather needle anyway ;) The machine to grind soles and heels (Ausputzmaschine) is used for grinding wood now. Yeah, having machines is great. I bought a cheap car and did the welding myself. You save huge amounts of money by doing those things yourself and you learn a lot :)

That site also overcharges for the touch screen, which is nothing more than a PSP LCD and a suitable touch screen (combined price $94) plus a few level shifters (costing pennies) on a board ($1 from Radio Shack).
That's not a comparable screen to the Pandora, though. You're better off getting an N900 LCD and touchscreen for $140, which is (basically) the exact same as what's on the Pandora.
That's $290 for Beagleboard and LCD though, and the extra stuff (battery + charger and WiFi, notably) will certainly push you over the Pandora's $330. The question you need to ask is whether you would rather (or think it would be easier to) start with something, hack out what you don't want, and then add back what you do, or start with base components and build it up, adding only the things you want in the way that you want them. There are benefits to both: Start with a Pandora and it will probably be cheaper; start with a BeagleBoard (or one of its derivatives) and build it up to put things where you want them to go.

How do you use level shifters to drive the LCD from the beagle board? Do you use it with the DVI port? The PSP LCD uses LVDS doesn't it? Or can you just wire it from teh Beagle's extension header? (serious question, link would be appreciated, not saying I don't believe you).

That's a pretty broad "basically" since the n900 screen is 16:9 I believe (it mentions recording 16:9 videos at 800x480 which doesn't make much sense since then the pixels would be non-square, wouldn't they?), and is also 3.5" not 4.3", and is transreflective. So it's actually not that similar except in that it's 800x480 and has a resistive touchscreen.

The LCD pins are directly accessible on the revC boards. You can bypass the DVI port, go straight for the LCD pins which can (almost) directly drive the PSP LCD. The only difference is the BeagleBoard uses a (I think) 5 volt signal whereas the PSP LCD expects a 3.3 volt signal. Or something like that, I can't be bothered to look up the exact numbers, I just know they're different, hence the level shifters.

You're right, I got confused for some reason. Same resolution made me think I was right but my memory was faulty. I meant an Archos 605 screen, which can be had (complete with touchscreen, I might add) for under $100 (or $130 at worst).

$16.67 Repair Parts Replacement LCD Module with Backlight for PSP 1000

That's a lot less expensive. Not sure if it's the same quality though.

ah, deal extreme. Where the old adage "you get what you pay for" is oh so true. Except in their case the part that suffers is the delivery time, not the quality. Their stuff is usually fairly good quality, it just takes FOREVER to get there. It's nice to order yourself presents sometimes because you're likely to forget you even ordered it.

The welding for what, Mali? The frame?
I said 'cheap' car, not scrap  The sills needed some holes closed, that's all. I'm alright at welding, as it wasn't the first time I did it. It seems like people think I'm posting incredible stories  Not everyone is an IT specialist these days, or to be more precise, wants it to be ;)

It's just funny that you do so much stuff. I'm that way too but most people find their niche and that's it, they don't really do activities outside of that very much. I've only done arc welding, never done it with a torch. I mostly do soldering and electronics though since I'm in an apartment and don't have the space / proper area to deal with bigger stuff right now :)
