My dad was actually a speaker at CES once.
That was in the good old days of CES, though. Nowadays, it's more about the investors than the technology.

I love that they have pretty much scuppered any ideas Apple may have had of calling their new tablet (if there is one) the iSlate.

I have a Haier TV. I thought they were a relative unknown in the technology world.

Mind you, I believe their TVs are rebranded as TEKNIKA in the UK and sold in Tesco.

Sony Relents After 11 Years, Launches First SD Card Line-up

There's five SD/SDHC cards and three microSD/microSDHC cards on offer, all class-4-speed. The 2GB SD is $14.99, and for SDHCs the 4GB is $29.99, 8GB is $44.99, 16GB is $79.99, 32GB $159.99.

The 2GB microSD is $14.99, 4GB is $29.99 and 8GB is $44.99. All come with adapters and the possibility of a heart-attack being brought on as Sony losing a little more of its stubbornness. [Sony]

What makes me hesitant to forge an opinion about Tegra 2 right now has multiple reasons. Tegra took ages to get into products after the initial presentation. Other manufacturers have much more experience in the embedded market and I plain don't like it when companies that once had a big name rush into a different market and claim "that's mine". Nvidia's CEO is a really arrogant person. That chart about Tegra's theoretical market that completely ignores the competition shows the thinking behind their strategy. I think it can only fail. They might build some nice tablets and some entertainment systems for cars, but I doubt that they will be able to penetrate the market enough. I see Qualcomm as most promising company for getting marketshare right now.

Also I think that Cortex A9 is just Cortex A9, no matter what graphics is used. The chances are high that the CPU becomes the bottleneck. ION has basically been a desaster. The shared memory system cripples Atom's performance in applications and the Atom cripples the graphics performance. As long as there is no realworld benchmark available, I don't believe in shiny product presentations. So far I haven't seen Nvidia get it right in the past and personally I'm not interested in 1080p or something. Tegra 2 looks interesting, but I'll wait for some substance first :)

The way I see it, Tegra 1 was a stepping stone for nVidia and its relative lack of market penetration doesn't really say much about the potential success of Tegra 2. It's easy to see why most people overlooked Tegra - because of its relatively weak CPU. But when you think about it, only just now are a lot of companies aside from TI pushing their Cortex-A8 or A8-like solutions. By not putting all of their energy into an A8 solution and instead going for a simpler to implement ARM11 one with Tegra 1 nVidia was able to get the rest of their SoC worked out, then were able to skip A8 completely and go straight to A9. They'll probably appear in designs months before others ship out of order or even multi-core ARM designs. And while these things might only mean so much in practice they're going to do mean a lot in impressing companies to use the chip and people to buy the devices that are.

I don't think you can really bring Ion to this, given how much that was targeting desktops. There's just far too little to offer in that arena, so it was a bust from the start. I really don't think that multi-core A9 is weak when paired with the embedded 3D we're looking at - high end Tegra and SGX look nice, but they're not about to give a high end desktop GPU a run for its money. You might not be interested in 1080p, but in marketing terms this stuff is gold. You have to bear in mind that nVidia has not just been making 3D cards all these years - they've been doing northbridges, audio, encoding/decoding.. basically all things they've applied towards Tegra. The thing they haven't applied is the CPU, which is a direct design win for ARM. So really ARM's IP is being pushed here as much as anything, more so than with Qualcomm or Marvell pushing their own CPUs.

I find it interesting that you're more willing to bank on Qualcomm. If you think nVidia took long to get Tegra to market then you should think the time Snapdragon took was an eternity. We're only just now seeing it appear what, 4 years after it was announced? While I'm sure Snapdragon 2 won't take as long I still think it'll be some time. Tegra 2 is out NOW, and I think it's going to start appearing in things very soon. You can think of all of the hype behind Tegra 1 really applying more towards Tegra 2. It kind of reminds me of Microsoft with XBox paving the way for XBox 360.

I will welcome Tegra 2 if it's really a good SoC, but right now I'm not willing give too much premature praise. The reason I mentioned Snapdragon are the recently released smartphones from some big players. I didn't pay much attention to Snapdragon's development, I have to admit. It seems sure that Tegra 2 will be the first A9 on the market, but I want to see a real comparison to other SoCs first, before I make up an opinion. It's not always a good idea to skip an iteration, because Qualcomm can penetrate the market already while Nvidia still has to find manufacturers. The next Snapdragon(more an intermediate step) is already announced for Q2 the second half of the year (1.3GHz 45nm) and a dual core version (2x 1.5GHz) will reach products in 2011. Time will tell.

The good thing is, that we will finally see the non-phone ARM market take off :)

So you like Atom handhelds, running Linux? I find it a little funny, you seem opposed to nVidia trying to claim the handheld market but at least they're going with a CPU architecture that makes sense for it instead of pushing x86 just because it bolsters their company.

I'm not sure why people are so impressed with Quake 3. When you're running an x86 handheld you should damn well play the one strength you have, and that's to run closed source x86 games (run something in Windows, run something in WINE, run native Linux versions, run SOMETHING!) instead of running the one game everyone else can run. Did you know Tegra 1 already runs Quake 3 at 40fps?

I'm not propagating x86 or anything. I'm just a Quake fan and thought this would fit in the CES thread :)

The good thing about Moorestown right now is, that it's not able to run Windows. There will be a Windows compatible version later, though. I like it, that Intel moves away from Windows and pushes an own Linux instead.

I'm not so opposed to Nvidia's SoCs like you seem to think ;) It's a bit difficult to be precise in a foreign language. I'm just trying to filter out the marketing talk and forge an opinion that is based on a more broad thinking. The problem with that kind of thinking is, that details get lost, though.

That's certainly a good thing from the point of view that it's going to force a bunch of people to run Linux, but it's bad for Moorestown since it takes away the only real advantage that they had. I think they're setting themselves for a pummeling.

How is it non-Windows compatible again? I think I remember something about it not having PCI. But, it should still be capable of running Wine. Another "Lindows" sort of company could clean up with this.

It has something todo with not being BIOS and ACPI compatible. I've just read that somewhere, but it might not be the whole truth. What I'm intersted in is Moorestown's power efficiency and which GPU they use. I haven't found info, yet. I didn't search hard, though :D

Agreed. It will be a nice victory for ARM and its licensees :)
