I would like to install linux on a memory card on my hp 9610us laptop. It has a built in memory card reader, but I don't know if it can boot from it and if it can, what special (if any) prep is needed for the memory card. Does anyone know of a faq or how-to to install linux on a memory card (secure digital)? I am assuming that 8gb would be plenty for the os and and my files. Would it be possible to create a file on my hard disk that linux can access as a hard disk when it's running to use as a swap file? I don't think the memory cards are fast enough for that use (or are they)?

Most internal memory card readers are connected on the internal USB hub. That means that you have to treat the card like a USB flashdrive. Search for a Linux distribution that is suitable for flash drive installation (try Puppy Linux) and follow the directions, but point it to the memorycard. Then try to boot from USB.
