Initial setup wifi problems

Yesterday I finally received my Pandora and was extremely excited. Today I'm completely fed up. :( I've been totally unable to get online with my new gadget and therefore can't build it up into the thing of beauty that I want it to be.

My problem is NetworkManager, it refuses to work correctly for me at all. Sometimes it will see my wireless network, and other times nothing at all. Is there a way to manually scan? I've been disabling and renabling network connections, but that too is also very hit and miss as to whether it will actually scan or not. So, I tried the instructions from the wiki for command line connection, but that too doesn't work. I'm really starting to pull my hair out here. :(

I have two other laptops, an eeepc, a couple of blackberries and a G1 phone and they all see and connect to my network with no problems (admittedly one of the laptops has NetworkManager installed with no problems).

Can anyone help me out here?

I'm presently going through all the different channels now, but no change so far. :(

I've also attached the output to dmesg for you to look at.output.txt

nothing here... no dhcpoffers (i have dhcp activate in the router, and not protection)

all my neigbours wifis work in channel 1,2,3,4,5 and 11, i am using the 8.

I tried using other channels just in case... but nothing...

your hardware seems to be OK, same output here

try:

1. Disable encryption

2. Make sure protocol is set to G mode (not N)

3. sudo killall NetworkManager

4. sudo ifconfig wlan0 down

5. sleep 5

6. sudo ifconfig wlan0 up

7. sudo dhclient wlan0

edit: also try 'sudo iwconfig wlan0 power off'

if you know how to mess with wpa_supplicant, do your own config

also try other access points and routers, if you can

Encryption has been switched off since yesterday.

Protocol was mixed B/G/N now changed to G, no changes.

ifconfig commands all done, output vi dhclient is 'No DHCPOFFERS received'

wlan0 power off command, no effect.

Tried the wpa_supplicant stuff from the wiki and get the error 'Could not connect to wpa_supplicant - re-trying'. Toggle wifi off and back on again but still the same output.

configured static ip address and route with the commands 'sudo ifconfig wlan0' and 'route add default gw'. Tried to ping the gateway but get the error 'Destination Host Unreachable'

All other routers in my area (8 ssids) are protected so can't try them, channels changed to 'free' ones, still no joy.

Anyone know where the logs for NetworkManager live? Only see Xorg, lastlog(?) samba dir, slim.log(?) and wtmp(?) in /var/log.

well, is the first time i see an ipk packet, and i dont found how to install... ipkg install doesnt work...

ok, i didnt search well. sudo opkg install <packagename.ipk>

Seems both Zark and I have the exact same problems, surely we can't be the only ones? Everybody else is able to get online with no problems?

i have the same dmesg output, which maybe means the hardware is ok, but you are not getting DHCP offers, i'd change router brands...

to install the driver, from terminal: 'sudo opkg install <packagename>'

You mean buy a new router? Can't see me doing that seeing as this one (Linksys WAG320N) is the best one that I've had working in my area (and I've been through a few). Also, it works with absolutely ever other device I have, and others my friends have brought round.

As for the installation, another failure. Error messages say:

Installing wl1251-modules (1.0-r24.5) to root...

Configuring wl1251-modules.

Adding system startup for /etc/init.d/wl1251-init.

Starting WL1251 MAC80211 Wireless LAN driver: wl1251.

Yes, I have the same problem. Sometimes I see neigboring aps, but they're up intermittently. I can see this if I do the command:

sudo iwlist wlan0 scan

I can run this command once and get info on one or more aps, but if I repeat the command straight away sometimes I get nothing except the error message:

wlan0 Interface doesn't support scanning : Device or resource busy

exactly the same then....

if someone know about..... what to do... i just got, and still i didnt do anything , just try to set up the wifi....

Well, according to the DMESG output, it seems the WLAN module is fine.

There are a few things you could check out:

1. Get as close to your router as possible and try again. Maybe the antenna of the Pandora has an issue. Never seen that, but could happen.

2. Try to use a public hotspot somewhere in town. While the Pandora seems to work with most routers, it MIGHT be that some have issues.

3. Reflash the firmware completely. It might be a flashing error as well.

The testing routine the Pandora undergoes includes a connection to the internet via WLAN, so it should've worked when we got it.

Of course, it might be the soldering is a bit flakey and bumping around while shipping might cause it to break, but as the module is being found, that seems strange.

I checked your router, someone has the same issues with a plain USB WiFi stick.

Also check that your Router is running on the latest firmware, there might be a bug there as well.

my router is a DSL-2640B of link too...

but the strange is that it dont detect any ap of the neigbours, there are a lot. Only if i am checking all the time from the console, maybe one , appear for some seconds,as to milesy.

I checked to go around all the house, close to the router... and nothing...

the box where it came looks ok. only a small hit in one side. And with all the stuff inside, i dont think it came broken... unless it came in a box full of magnets :p

another friend got the pandora the same day that me, so must be of the same run of boards, same run of tests, i will ask he.

Well, according to the DMESG output, it seems the WLAN module is fine.

There are a few things you could check out:

1. Get as close to your router as possible and try again. Maybe the antenna of the Pandora has an issue. Never seen that, but could happen.

Thanks for jumping in Ed, I know you must be busy as usual with other things.

1. I'm in the next room to my router and although there's only a wall in between, I moved next to the router and tried but still no joy - can see networks, can't connect to any.

2. Today is Queen's Day, which means I've got no chance of anywhere being open until Monday at the earliest. :(

3. So far, I've done 2 complete reflashes (last night and today), and also booted both from the NAND and SD.

There isn't too much choice for me with routers as my connection is via ADSL so I also need a built in modem(as an aside I believe with these types of routers they can't run custom firmware), and it is running the latest official firmware, just installed it now. ;)

have you also reset the configuration of your router?

do it only, if you can reconfigure it again...

I had to press some hidden button with a thin screwdriver on my router...

cheers

Yep, router has been reset and reconfigured more times today than it has done in the past year.

Can anyone tell me where daemon.log lives? Failing that, where NetworkManager logs are? They would normally be in /var/log, right?

i cant found them neither....

i think i tryed everything i found.

to let the battery out for some time.

to reflash

to install the beta driver...

to turn off the save energy system....

to turn off, on the wifi, and the NetworkManager

to call to murphy, sleep, and try again.

It doesnt found any access point.... only if i am scanning manually all the time, for some secs i detect a neigbour.... (there are a lot)

i will go in a while to my office to check there.... but anyway it should found APs here

it is a crap... cause the rest seems be working very well. And it is true that to have mine in my hands changed my mind.. i just hope you can improve the production speed.
