Hello! I'm very new to the GP32 scene, and doesn't own a device yet.
However, I will soon purchase one, but would be happy if someone could answer two questions for me before I buy one.

I'm considering buying one from gbax.com and I'm thinking of buying the "guaranteed 166Mhz" BLU unit. My question is, has anyone bought one of these and is there a risk that you get a BLU+ unit? And what are the differences between a BLU one and a BLU+ except the "Lines" on the screen that I've heard about?

The other question I have is, is it possible to run FF3/6 for SNES on the GP32, or does it crash or run slow? I'm just curious because I love RPGs...

I'm sorry if you've heard these questions a thousand times before, but I couldn't find any answers while searching around on the forums. ;)

Thanks a lot! :)

The chance is almost 100% that you get a BLU+, but there is no difference except the lines that have some too old programs.
BLU+ is no official Name, it has been created by the community.
Ther is only a GP NLU, FLU and BLU.

I bought a BLU+ from Gbax about six months ago and haven't had any problems with it. In fact I love the little bugger. Unfortunately I don't have it to hand so can't try FF3/6 but I know that, thanks to some fantastic work from Khaos, we now have a BLU+ version of Osnes9xgp BLU+. It's also worth checking out WarmFluffyUK's GP32 compatibility lists .

Aha! Thanks for the help! :)

So there really isn't any difference between a BLU unit and a BLU+?
You can run all the programs and games without problems, or is there any difference?

Also, is this screen problem fixed if you replace the screen with a new one? Because it's just the screen that's bad, right?

Thanks again!

You can't replace the screen. I believe they (the Samsung original and the new BLU+ screen) have different internal power settings and such.

However, there is very little now that a BLU can do that can not also be done with a BLU+. Some smaller, older programs may not work, but you won't miss them probably. gpCinema 2.0 also doesn't work on BLU+, but 1.0 works fine and has very few differences from the new ver.

Overall, there's really no reason to be afraid of the BLU+ units anymore. In fact, they have a better build quality, which fixed many common problems in the original BLUs, and the screen is brighter and produces better images.

Okay! Thanks for the info!

So the things I've heard that the BLU+ has a yellow kind of screen with worse quality isn't true?

I read about this "yellow kind of screen" also before purchasing my GP32 BLU+. When it arrived, couldn't see what all the fuss was about, looked normal to me. As mentioned, you will find the screen better on the BLU+'s

:)

The screen protector on all BLU's (including BLU+ and regular BLU) are tinted slightly yellow to make up for the bluish hue the backlight gives.

I also got a guaranteed 166Mhz BLU+ from GBAX and just love it. Sure the white lines on some stuff were boring, but most of the software is now BLU+ compatible, including OSNES, so go for it!

The screen on the BLU+ is supposed to have better contrast than the older BLUs.

The yellow is from a plastic cover over the LCD. This cover can easily be removed (you don't even have to take the unit apart) and a glass one put in it's place. If you do this you will get perfect color plus scratch resistance.

=Perfect color

= yellow whites and easily scratched screens.

When I got My BLU the screen wasn't bluish it was yellow, until I took off the yellow plastic and replaced with glass then it was white. But I have seen some screens that were slightly red or slightly yellow even with glass. Some can be slightly off color in any way I guess.

So would u say that the current emulators for
Genesis
NES
SNES

are all 100% problem free for BLU+ now

No problems with Genesis (Dr MD 2.0) and NES (LJGP32 0.4 or NesterGPd 1.5a). OpenSnes9xGP 0.3 will show the white bar but you should be able to run Snes9xGP 1.0 (although slow). There has been a converted OpenSnes9xGP for the BLU+ recently but haven't got round to testing this version yet.

:)

i bought the BLU+ with original intentions to play SNES RPGs and in particular, FF3/6, Chrono Trigger and other Square hits.

I played FF3/6 halfway using Snes9xgp until my SMC card got wiped out.

Snes9xgp runs a bit dodgy with/without sound, and no problems with transparency.

With Opensnes9xgp for BLU+, FF3 runs a bit faster than Snes9xgp (but still dodgy), but still nowhere good with sound. Also, the transparency hack doesn't work good for FF3. In fact, Snes9xgp has better transparency. I don't know about other games.

Note that although sound runs for both, they r Slow, and doesn't make pleasant for the ear :p

now, i jus love DrMD, where emulation reaches the original genesis (or even better at higher clockrates).

i will jus wait for SNES emulation to catch up (F-day, or GBAX coding competition hopefully)

:D

Sounds like it'll be worth getting a BLU+ then.

Yeah, I can't wait for the SNES emulation to catch up either... :)

But the NES games and the SCUMM games are reasons enough for me to buy one...

BTW, are the SCUMM games working well on the GP32? Are they slow or do they work well even with speech?

scumm games like day of the tentacle and indy and the last crusade work great with sound and speech
