I Just Got Davec's Cap, Review Inside =>

The original cap was just fastened to a metal stem sticking out of the switches, and you just pull the cap off and put the other one on. No irreversible changes necessary

Got my cap in the mail yesterday. It took me a while to get used to the new cap ( I have been using the rubber tip from a seringe's plunger until now ) but I have to say it's brilliant. I've been trying it with a couple of different games and emulators and it feels like I'm playing with a good quality gamepad. I can recommend this cap to anyone, it's really not a lot of money compared to how much it improves your GP2X.

OT: Does anyone else think it is strange that just 1 or 2 months ago almost everyone was bashing DaveC (even though he was only a bit overly pessimistic) and now he seems to be everybody's darling? :p

Well, he might be an 'optimistic realist' regarding a lot of things, but he does know about joystick-caps. Credit where it's due, I guess.

:p Very Off-Topic indeed ... the cap is truly a huge improvement and is worth $10.

Hi I got my gp2x today.
I like it, but the joy sux! Not wrong, but difficult to use on a portatile.
I read a lot of good reviews and I want to buy one, but I have a question:
If gp2x was born with DaveC cap, do you think users got something to say about joypad?

Cheers Hanz, Rayek B)

I best get pming DaveC :)

I knew the original joystick being concave plastic would be trouble. If only I'd posted that on the GPH suggestion site I could have said 'told you so' when it was released

Is the swap perminant or would I be able to put the crap one back on if needed?
Nothing is permenant.
You can put the crap one back if needed, it is not as if the caps are glued down or anything.

How do these thumbstick replacements work with games like Street Fighter II.

Its still not perfect, but I think most people would have been satisfied if it came with this type of cap. With Mame, I was only able to pull off special moves in Samurai Shodown maybe 1 in 10 times with the stock cap. With this one, i can get them 95% of the time. Thats all the proof i need. Now i know most people will disagree with me here, but i actually think in some fighting games it performs better than a d-pad. It just feels more natural to do the sweeping motions required with those games. It really depends on what your playing though.

OMG what an improvement. Playing Quake and Doom is so much more fluid now with DaveC's cap. I was getting seriously cheezed off with the standard joystick, couldn't move to the left, had to press the stick several times before I could move.
But now it's beautiful. Stress levels have come down :D

Nice work mate! U've changed my GP2X experience, for the better!

Another very satisfied new-stick-cap-owner here - even navigating the menus is massively nicer, easier and more comfortable with it.

I gave it a quick SF2-test, and it worked nicely enough given my shoddy timing. The basic Ryu QCF/QCB moves were entirely do-able, then my cheap batteries ran out.

Next step, Ansmann Photo 2500's! :D

My new cap arrived this morning. Massive improvement. I'm a very happy bunny :D

How long do those ansmann batteries take to charge? I might go for those if they don't take like 8 hours.

I've seen you comment on this a few times, and I'm a bit confused. According to my manual for my 15 min charger that came with 2000's, it will take 25 minutes to charge a pair of 2500's. Why don't you just buy new 2500 mAH batteries and use you existing charger, it should get the job done in less than 30 minutes. I realize there are like, 4 different methods of charging batteries and perhaps some chargers can't do this, but it might be worth checking your manual or the manufacturers website.

Generally quick charge features will fry/severely limit the life of your batteries.

If it is of any help, the Ansmann PhotoCam Mobil travel charger can charge four 2400mAh Ansmann Photo batteries (which come supplied with it) at once in about two hours. I would advise avoiding "quick" chargers, though, as they do seem to make such batteries have a rather shorter useful lifespan.
