ehh...id be more comfortable if a senior member would take on this role, i like the effort though, and im prepared to throw down $50 for a competition started by say, craig or ed, hopefully made specifically towards the pandora, and its still early, wait for batch 1 to finish at least

Edit: best ninja ive ever witnessed

The rules are much more simple:

Make anything you want by the end of March.

Let everyone try it.

We all decide who should win.

Can you edit this post as to who funds go to then plz craig?

Well I was thinking at least give a little focus Homebrew comps seem to do a lot better when people have at least a nudge in direction. Whats more I was thinking platformers as this would then inject a nice swathe of platformers into the Pandora scene.

Then we could start aother one say for strategy or arcade or something.

If you leave it open people may inadverntly try to perfect something too much and end up with nothing but an awesome looking demo

Not good idea. There should be a specific theme or task for the game so you have to write it from scratch. Otherwise a dev could send in old thingies..

Type of game, I'd say: Small native original 3D-Game, because there are none yet (despite ports).

Seconded

Great idea, but how would the competition work exactly? Will we vote on what game or application we would like to see, and then programmers will seek to make the best version? Or is it a free-for-all with prizes for the highest # of votes?

Well my hope had been to do a platformer one until the end of March. Anyone could vote for any platforming game (or vague platformer variant).

This would get all the platformers interested and all the platformer fans piling in to get quality platforming games out there.

And then maybe just have a rolling comp 2 month comp or something. Maybe software we really want to see (100 percent PSX for instance could always be joint tied with first in the competitions. That way for instance someone could submit a PSX emulator and still be recognised for their efforts even if it's a platforming competition or a fighting competition etc)

And yes the idea was free for all with prizes with highest votes but having a 1st,2nd and 3rd.

Also platformers are relatively easy to make which would be good considering where this project is? (early stages etc. than 3d games)

Don't start this 'theme' bullshit.

Let devs do what they want to do or you will cripple the number of entries, also you might not like the idea of 'ports' or 'old stuff' but what if we got a port of Minecraft and an update of N64?

You would be happy then I suspect.

should be two categories, games and apps, plain and simple, let it run, and i say close this thread, let ed make an official sticked one, get some press going at pandorapress, and yes craig, even get the gp32 gang on this

I like the idea....but..... wait for batch 1 to finish at least . :)

I don't have my Pandora and like me many others.

Why do people keep mentioning wait until batch 1 is finished?

All that means is when you've waited until your pandora has arrived you ALREADY have a bunch of games done from the first competition which (may even get extra levels after the comp) and you can be looking forward to the next comp.

Again I said platformers to level the playing field a bit as anyone with a bit of prog knowledge could knock a pygame up and submit it. More intense homebrew games like 3d, RPGs, strategys would be better for a June comp when more ppl have pandas.

Look I don't want to sound childish but it was my idea so can you just do as I say

Lol jokes

I shall take part in the competition, or try atleast, once the holiday starts.

(Last school day tomorrow.)

I will also contribute 5 bucks myself to motivate the other competitors a bit.

So... Craig? To whom goes the pot money for safekeeping and how?

We need a contest for racing games at one point. Too few are playable on Pandora compared to other genres!

I am not really a big racing fan so my contribution will be quite different from that... still sketching out what exactly I will try to tackle in the limited timeframe I've got.

I'm wondering who else will step up to do something and what they will be up to.. hmm.

Weird world. I wanted to start a similar topic in the next days.

So, a developing competition: It would be one of the most effective ways to get Devs to work (me included :D ), I found it great fun to take part in both gp32spain - WiZ competitions (yeaah, I guess this is the point, where Craig shots Caps Lock and starts to type "WHAT IS YOUR ORDERNUMBER???"). It was motivating even though I knew I wouldn't win anything. And the results were phenomenal: GINGE, PCSX4All, improved SNES, some great homebrew(even 3d stuff)....

I would do it like that:

  • Make different categories: Homebrew games, Emulators(also including things like better GUIs) and maybe ports(judging quality and quantity), priorize emulators in prices.
  • The community donates the price money, OP maybe sponsores maybe a pandora for the best entries.
  • At the end, split the pricepool to the categories, give prices to the first 5 at least (maybe also smaller things like SD-Cards, extra batteries).
  • Don't specialise genre of homebrew games. What counts is that we get polished software, not that it is written from scratch.
  • Let it last for 3 monthes, not more.
  • Make it OFFICIAL.
  • Judges should be OPT and some proven community members.

Once more: I can hardly imagine what would be possible if I look what 2600€ in the WiZ-Competition moved. Please make this happen :)
