GPD P2 Max - Announced

It's another hard pass from me.

I picked up the Pocket 1, and it's great barring some pretty huge flaws - bugs in the intel gfx drivers mean that you only get half a display in DirectX and (what was) GDI fullscreen modes, so emulation is broken for quite a few systems. The screen is way too high resolution for the hardware powering it. My app started on the Pandora, so it opens an 800x480x8 screen which uses OpenGL to scale up to the full 1920x1200 (not a perfect scale, but close enough you can't tell). And the hardware can't maintain 60fps doing that if I do anything else in the thread that runs it - which is just basically copying the display to a texture.

So I'd quite like a slightly faster handheld - but the Pocket 2 screwed the pooch with its shitty mouse replacement, so that's a nope.

The Pocket 2 Max is just too bloody big - doesn't fit in my inside jacket pocket (the Pocket 1 is a bit of a squeeze). Another nope for me.

Would be nice to get one that's fit for my needs. I'm tentatively hoping the Pyra might be the one, but it's way too thick - I like a nice slim handheld. Still, in the absence of any other options...

My main concern is not really if it fit's in my pocket but if it is usable in general. Handheld devices like the Pandora are great to, well, hold it in your hands and use thumb-typing. They are not great to lay on a table and being used with normal finger typing. The Pocket 2 Max is to big to hold for thumb-typing and still to small (for my taste) to be used comfortably as a Laptop, except you want bend your back like the Hunchback of Notre Dame.

My wife doesn't know it yet but I got the Micro PC just before the indiegogo campaign ended...
I have until august to make up a story about why I got it and/or need it. :D

That's what makes the Pyra so good. My wife is just sick of hearing about it now, and it's like "oh, just get the damned thing already!"

Was tempted by the MicroPC though, and would be facing a similar dilemma, although it really shouldn't matter unless money is a taboo subject for some reason.

That's no way to talk about Eight Bit's wife.

If you can't think of any I can give you some to try. If those fail just send it to me. No need for arguing over gadgets. ;)

Yes, that's what the OneMix2s was better. The mouse is MUCH better on this one.

Indeed ED, and they have a very sexy looking red model too. I've considered jumping in on that one for a while now, but I think I'll wait to see what GPD produce next. hopefully they'll get back in my good books with a UMPC I actually want. Otherwise, I fear that I shall have to get a Pyra when they're released possibly in the next year or two.

For my taste they are too expensive.
It's too much money to spend if you want to buy all their products.
I don't want to buy something I with such a short lifespan.

GPD are at Japan IT Week in Tokyo where they showed the Pocket 2 Max.

Yeah, now I see it side by side, it's way too big. Another pass from me, confirmed. It's a shame, as I love the Pocket 1.

Not sure I'll even stock those... I'm a bit annoyed with GPDs behaviour at the moment anyways, and... well, that's not pocketable and for the price they'll possibly want for that, you can probably get a decent 12" Netbook with a lot better specs.

And if you can't pocket it and need an extra bag anyways, a normal 12" netbook would be fine as well.

Agreed.

What sets GPD Pocket 1 & 2 apart from netbooks was their sheer miniature size.
This fucking GPD Pocket Max isn't any different to any other netbooks or small laptops.
Next year, GPD will make a GPD Pocket Ultra Max, which will be the size of a 15.4" screen laptop, lol :D

ED isn't desperate for that GPD money? Something tells me Pyra is closer than we think.

I was never desperate for their money. But thanks to tons of chinese resellers selling them within Europe illegally bypassing the VAT (which is 150 EUR with these expensive devices) AND a huge failure rate combined with a VERY VERY poor support by GPD for their distributors, there's not even that much money to be made.
Very sad, GPH was WAY better back then, GPD seems to have worse support the more devices they release.
