Gp2x Is Highly Overrated,imo

Had mine a few days now. Was really unimpressed until I worked out how to get rid of the terrible flickering on the screen.

Now it's good for Megadrive games. Lots run at a solid 60fps with sound, which is good for me :)

It'll be perfect once they sort out the screen config problems in the firmware, and we start seeing the other emulators (C64, SNES, Spectrum) hit the same level as DRMD.

I`d be interested to find out how you got rid of your flickering problems

...Which still does not get rid of shimmering.

Say, is there a way to check the LCD in hardware only? I'm starting to think my 2X actually is faulty, not just with bad firmware.

Those settings work for me .. gets rid of the flickering and makes the display appear crisper. I'm sure each LCD acts differently, so you need to experiment with the settings until you find one that works.

Also, the next FW upgrade has configurable LCD settings.

With literally thousands of classic games available and excellent movie playback (seriously, movies look MUCH better on my GP2X screen than on my PSP (not including UMD movies, of course ;)) My small investment of <$200 has more than payed for itself in satisfaction. Despite the minor problems, all of which are fixable, the GP2X is still my favorite handheld.

if you overlook the whole DIY element of the GP2X, and instead choose to moan and groan about it rather than embrace it, you'll miss a vital point.

you're -supposed- to rip off the bad joystick knob, break one of your little brothers toys, and fix it, well and truly. i've got skulls on my gp2xen!

not opened yer gp2x yet? do it! put it back together again .. or put the guts in something else!

DIY is a perfectly valid angle for why there is so much 'hype' about the GP2X, but as for if its overrated, i think many other angles are overlooked, in the rush to get in on a hot item ..

(i love my gp2xen, i'm gonna get more of them, they're such a handy machine for the price.. or at least, will be when USB works..)

Wow talk about denial, i mean come on guys the gp2x has more faults than something built by monkeys, i for one is staying well away from it until gamepark holdings get their act together and sort out the biuld/firmware issues. Looking at the current state of things you might as well get a soldering iron, some chips, resistors and circuit boards and biuld your own. I am not spending £100+ on something half baked which needs pacthing just to be able to perform it's primary functions properly and runs risk of becoming a very expensive brick after each firmware upgrade.
I think Criag needs to have some strong words with gamepark because people are parting with their money in return for what seems to be a flashy turd.
And yes people need to face the facts at the current state the gp2x is in, it's not worth the £100+ you a paying for it.

You can flame me all you want, but just remember this post when you are looking at an expensive brick. :p B)

Apart from the scan lines needing fixing which will hopefully be on the next firmware update they'll be nothing wrong with the gp2x.

I've flashed my firmware backwards and forwards several times, and have never once bricked it (must be 10-15 times now). I don't see this 'risk of bricking it', I really don't. True, in earlier firmwares there were a few problems, but everything's been fixed now.

The majority of people who have bricked it weren't actually trying to flash the firmware. They just put in a dodgy card.

Not going to flame you, I think you have a point, but quite exaggerated.

The only problem everyone seems to not be able to live with is the joystick. The LCD works just fine on mine.... Besides a little flicker when the batteries get a little low.

I belive a plan to replace the stick cap is already in the works, and the cap DaveC has for sale looks really, really good in the meantime.

A couple of units had some shoddy soldering work, but they're being weeded out now before they're sent out. The newer firmwares will be fixing a LOT of the problems we have so far, especially with flicker and battery life.

The MP3 player I'm not crazy about, but I'm sure when people get coding various apps, better MP3 players will be available. Preferably with button locking and position search.

Early adoption of this kind of device means weeding out the little things after the big things are taken care of. Sure, it's far from perfect... right now, but I'm sure by the time you're ready to buy, it'll be good enough for you.

No flame .. just pointing out this bit:

"i for one is staying well away from it until gamepark holdings get thier act together and sort out the biuld/firmware issues."

So you don't even own one yourself, eh?

Note: I woud't fling the word "monkeys" around as an insult .... just look at your simian grammar and spelling.

The joystick's a given fault, even though I really don't mind using it. Sonic's quite easy =P.

I would like to see a VERY efficient mp3/ogg player, though, one that plays at ridiculous speeds like 40Mhz. =P. That would ensure 11hours of playtime! I usually play the stock music player at 60Mhz, anything lower than that on my machine really lags the menu. Doesn't lag anything else, but the menu seems very sloppily coded - and the music skips just a little. If I could, I'd write a menu that had an 8bit display, with the battery status on screen at ALL TIMES. I mean, if Reesy could write his menu at 66Mhz and still have it smooth, then why can't GPH?

I love my Gamepark, though. It's awesome for playing games on, like the odd game of Bust-A-Move at school, playing Phantasy Star 4 in the twilight in my room, getting to code my own games for it =D I'm even going to use it to show a cartoonist some character designs!

massively overrated? i didnt think it was actually "rated" by anyone except us!!
If you said "i think that the psp is massively overrated" then sure, its a fair enough comment because of some several burning problems such as the price of things to get for it and all that.
But for a £130 unit where all everything is for free? Its kind of crazy to think that when most people today dont even know what one is.
oh, sorry, someone did call mine a "psp nintendo thing" yesterday...

i DO have my gripes against it, i find the joystick ok, not good on menus though!!! i heard that they are going to make a replacement, or at least thats what anna hong said. and she is always going on about "make the perfect unit!"
Im a bit upset though about my gp2x sometimes. I keep thinking that they are going to build a much better quality version of the early ones like i have! and then we will be the only ones with a iffy joystick and wavey lines, whilst people go on about how amazingly responsive theirs is etc. Kind of like people with flu vs blu arguments.

But its very early, i was VERY sceptical yesterday, but these guys in here made me a bit happier to look forward to more by having a little chat about how much of an idiot i am (apparently! ;) )
I think all will be sorted sooner or later. Its a much better life than with a psp!! So count your lucky stars i say and look up some stuff to look forward to :)

Also, i dont mean to flame you TelcoLou, but making a point of someones supposidly "simian grammar and spelling" is kind of simian also. I dont think shakespear used a :D in any of his work... and i dont think he had a gp2x either.
Ah the old FIRE WITH FIRE attack people will never learn ;)

P.s I have crappy simian grommer :D :p ;) and bad spolling to boot

Mine's great. No problems, the wife loves tilematch, I love the emulation, video player and eBook reader. Ok, the eBook software sucks, but the screen is fantastic for both books and films (firmware 1.1.0).

Personally, I think it was a total bargain, but each to their own.

About the only thing wrong with the GP2X is the Joystick.

Other wise its pretty near perfect (for its price point).

True all the software is cruddy (not homebrew, the firmwares) that should eventually change.

Remember this isn't Nintendon't or Sorrny, you can do what you want with this handheld (within the limits of memory and processing power). Isn't freedom worth that price? B)

i havent shown tilematch to my wife yet. Shes pretty occupied with solitaire on my PC!!! Its strange to think that i bought a £800 deck of cards... but to each their own!! ;)

Yeah, it seems easier to pull them away from Solitaire. If you like using your PC, either get another PC or never show her Zuma. :)
