Good Bye Ds

A slightly smaller N64?

The PSP and the DS are nearly the same size. In fact, I'd do as far to say that the PSP was bigger.

And you know what-when games are as good as Mario 64, I don't need photo-perfect graphics, cinematic sound and FMV of peach crying.

Ok here are some gameplay reasons why I prefer the PSP over the DS for the "the only reason people list is graphics" people.

1: Better controls for fighters/platformers.

2: More game selection. (more games at launch than the entire DS' total library so far)

3: Bigger more epic games (Dynasty warriors lets me fight hordes of enemies, armored core lets me take on HUGE bosses, and i'm psyched for YS.)

4: USB port which makes game exclusive add ons a breeze (No special cart port fitting, no fees to order special connectors from the company, cheap and practical for devs and the consumer)

5: Wider/bigger screen so I can see what's going on easier (and any maps or menus can be accessed via a button touch or as a mini-map)

6: Demo discs! I can try before I buy.

7: Larger media allows developers to make bigger games, no "golden sun" syndrome.

8: Better 2D conversion (ok it's graphical, but still.)

9: Analog control, sorry. But stretching my thumb to the middle of a touch screen with a piece of plastic strapped to my thumb is NOT a suitable replacement.

And a quick correction.

The PSP and the DS are nearly the same size. In fact, I'd do as far to say that the PSP was bigger.

wrong :p

LOL you guys obviously don't understand sarcasm. A much smaller N64 than :p The "cool" was reffering to the tiny new laptops they make and not the DS, it was a size comparison. Anyways its great people got opposing opinions. I'm not talking about its size when its closed, unless you play yours closed? must be even more dull than it already is, no I'm talking size when its open.

Well Mario 64 had me occupied for 5 minutes so each to his own I guess. One game doesn't make a system and porting old stuff and selling it for full price is crap and if you don't mind than keep spending your cash, although for the price of the game I could buy an N64 with mario 64 and 2 or 3 other games.

You don't want FMVs or CD quality audio or improved graphics? With people like you, we would still be cavemen, eating shit barbequed on a stick LOL nah I'm kidding, theres no decent arguments here.

PSP bigger than the DS, Mate I'd be quiet if I were you LOL.

Gameplay reasons? man I didn't even start that, all I said was why I don't like the DS and than I get all these people trying to tell me how small it is and that better audio etc is not important, and that MY reasons for not liking the DS is not based on reality, WTF? hahahahahaha very funny

You obviously care much more about graphics than gameplay.

Mario 64 is one of the best games of all time. I could have infinitely more fun playing that than playing Ridge Racer with "near PS2 quality sound and FMVs!!!!"

Better graphics does not equal better games. I was actually pleased at the launch of the GBA that it wasnt trying to be some amazing games console with great graphics but no good games- it provided the last refuge for quality commercial 2d games (and there were some great original games amongst the ports).

I would much rather have a SNES with every game ever released for it than a PS2 with every game ever released for it. No stupidly long FMVs, no amazing 3d graphics, just great gameplay and originality.

I am not against technology progression, but graphics and sound are not the most important thing, and espescially not in the handheld world.

According to several other people's tastes. There are no "best games of all time" really. If I were to list my personal best games of all time, they'd include Armored core, Super mario bros 3, super mario world, star control 2, last blade, metal slug, and Terranigma. :p

And compareing the GBA or DS to the snes in terms of gameplay is a complete and utter insult to the SNES in my eyes :p Snes had it's stinkers, but it had a brilliant library of original games, great RPGs, awesome platformers, and more talented third parties than the modern gaming world could ever hope for.

I'd rather have an SNES and a dreamcast and a neo geo than a PS2, xbox, and gamecube.

Now finding a good game is trying to find a diamond in a sea of rhinestones <_<

Cant remember who said about the screen protector thingys but i dont have any on my ds or my psp and my psp screen is in better condition so the clamshell design dosnt seem to help. I have actually even dropped my psp a few times.
Oh and the guy that keeps saying the psp is bigger please stop as i have them both on my kneee right now. The psp is a few mm longer but the ds is bigger overall

Yeah, Mario 64 WAS one of the best games of all time, and still is on it's own merits ON THE NINTENDO 64!!! Sorry, but one of the things that makes a game be that good are it's controls, which Mario 64 on N64 was applauded for. Every magazine, website and just about every person on earth (except those still trying desperately to argue why the DS is better than the PSP) have stated so many times how w/o proper analog control, Mario 64 on the DS LOSES much of what made it one of the greatest games of all time.

Did you guys know that Shigeru Miyamoto, Designer/Producer/Creator of the Mario series, he himself designed the controller for the N64. He designed it specifically, with Mario 64 in mind, and designed Mario 64 concurrently, around that controller. That is why the control of that game was SO perfect.

Playing this game on the DS pad, while doable, is just not the same, and the game takes a big hit in 'points' for that. The game also gains immensely in difficulty because of it... and not in a good way, cheap deaths do to crappy controls are not the 'good' kind of difficulty.

About the screen protectors... you know, Nintendo's own stand on that is that THEY DONT EVEN WANT YOU TO USE THEM. As a matter of fact, as is the case with most third party accesories, if you use them on your DS, and Nintendo finds out, THIS WILL VOID YOUR WARRANTY. The only third party accessories you can use w/o voiding your warranty are ones approved by Nintendo... and they have not yet approved ANY of the third party screen protectors. They strongly advise against using them. When I called to complain about my dead pixel, and just mentioned on the side that my touch screen had quite a few scratches on it... I got basically a denial that this was a problem, and was told that it had to be me, something I was doing wrong, or that I was using a third party stylus (which I was not). They said they had no other reports of this problem (funny, I know at least six other people with DS's who all have scratched up screens) and had no intention of releasing their own screen protectors or of authorizing any third party ones.

They sent me a new DS anyways, since it had the dead pixel, and since then I am afraid to touch it or buy any new games that require using the touch screen. I dont want to use a screen protector, mostly because a) they degrade the picture quality noticeably, and B) they all use adhesive, at least the three different brands I've seen... so if you ever end up removing them, they will leave residue on your screen.

So in this case, the DS having a folding desing 'protecting' the screen, doesn't really matter. And yeah, I also do not use a screen cover on my PSP and it has not gotten scratched yet...

As for the graphics argument... no graphics are not the most important thing in a game, but so what? Are you trying to say the PSP does not have any fun games? That's funny, several of us here own PSP's and have found most of the games to be very fun. Yeah, of course the DS can have fun games too... the only problem is... WHERE ARE THEY??? There are only 4 or 5 games at most on the DS right now that I consider to really be worth playing/purchase... PSP already has some 20+ import games available, I have bought 8 of them and I know there are more I dont have yet that others are saying are good.... and when it launches here even more will come. You guys are right... you dont NEED better graphics to have a better game, but you DO need to have games!!! Until the shortage on the DS is cured, PSP still has the upper hand, regardless of how good or not the graphics are.

You're pictures you just showed prove thats the psp is tectinally bigger then the ds, it's about the same depth but the psp is wider, have the ds open doesn't count, my GC and PS2 are massive in that case.

WTF, you play the damn thing open, so of course it "counts".

well it's definatley no oppinion that PSP has and will continue to have more games available than the DS. And it's definately not oppinion that this same fact has been a HUGE factor in the PS2 continuing to outsell the other home consoles despite the fact that the hardware is far inferior to either GC or Xbox. Variety and selection make a lot of difference.....

Oh I'm sorry if you prefer having inferior sound and graphics. To me the DS does not have "reasonable" graphics and sound. The Sega Saturn had "reasonable" graphics to the PS but not to the N64.

Nope DS is too big, no discussion there. Clamshell design is nasty in my opinion. It like one of those new cool mini laptops. Except they're proper computers with keyboards while the DS is just a slightly smaller N64.

Unless you smack the PSP into the ground, your not going to damage the screen. I've treated my PSP like shit and its holding up fine with no scratches. Bit dirty though.

Actually number 4 is not graphics. Its limitation of the hardware and software.

Mario 64 is still a port, if it was completely changed it would warrant full price, otherwise it should be a budget title. Wario Ware is like the GBA game shifted to the DS.

Of course PSP games are more expensive. I mean, like 4 people could make a DS quality game if they tried, while PSP games have you know productions costs. Its expensive to make games with near PS2 quality graphics, CD quality music and FMV. I doubt DS games cost too much more to make than GBA games.

hell I'll pay $100AU for a PSP game like NFSU Rivals any day, while DS? $50 max for top quality titles.

Anyway this was MY OPINION and obviously you disagree but your counter arguments have "no basis in reality." either.
That's just so wrong it's not even funny. The DS is practically the same size as a psp when closed. The PSP is wider, the DS is slightly taller and thicker.

PSP screens are extremely easy to damage, I've even seen pictures of display units in glass cases with damaged screens.

The DS can perfectly easily do FMV. Metroid Prime First Hunt has numerous FMV sequences, using both screens.

Mario 64 DS is very much updated, it easily warrants a full price tag.
Wario Ware Touched is a completely new game. Ever heard of a sequel?

Yes, PSP games are much more expensive to produce, which is exactly why it will get hardly any new games made for it, it will get mainly ports.

Are you listening to what other people are saying?? THE DS IS MUCH LARGER WHEN IT'S OPEN, thats what counts.

Do you have a psp? Do you know first hand how durable the screen is, obviously there are a lot of people here that do and not 1 person has said anything about the screen being damaged easily, actually its quite the opposite.

I've seen FMV that had better quality on the 32bit Saturn, hell, the N64 version of Resident evil 2 had better fmv than metriod and it sucked hard. The SegaCd had better FMV

I never played Mario 64 until I bought it on the DS. I don't even play it anymore except for some of the mini games because i thought it was crap. The controls sucked, the camera got stuck to many times which caused death, and it was too easy. My fiance plays it more than me. Since i've beaten Mario i haven't touched my DS, almost 3 weeks. I went to a game store last week and nothing interested me so my DS collects dust.

All i can say is this the Virtual Boy all over again only there will be a few more games before it's dead.

That's not what counts at all. Unless you're playing inside a carboard box, you're going to have plenty of space for the DS, so it makes no difference when you're playing. What matters is how much space it takes up when you are carrying it around, ie. when it's closed.

Do you have a psp? Do you know first hand how durable the screen is, obviously there are a lot of people here that do and not 1 person has said anything about the screen being damaged easily, actually its quite the opposite.
Admittedly I don't have first hand experience, but I have heard many people talk about it getting scratched easily.

Er... ok, it was FMV. It showed a movie and played some noise. What more do you want?

Ok, fine, that's your opinion, but a port of a game with a 96% average on gamerankings must be seen as good by some people.

I think of it like this; how are ya gonna play 3rd or 1st person shooters on a psp properly.
What was the point in puttin the analog stick on the left side(PSP).
What would you rather have, two decent sized screens( one touch, fuckin cool :p ) or one bigger sceen that offers nothing more. I mean if they had made the ds with a psp sized touch sceen it would be useless cause ya couldn't see what you were doin.
Who cares if you can watch movies and listen to music(GP32), the sony stick thingys cost loads plus if you wanna watch movies on your ds it cost about 15 pounds from lik-sang.
No good games comin out someone said; Mobile Suit Gundam Seed, Rayman DS, Dynasty Warriors, Animal Crossing, Megaman BN DS, Meteos, Metroid PH, Jump Super Star! (looks Like a Super Smash bros 2D but with jump characters), Naruto, Yoshi touch and go etc etc etc etc etc..........
Although these are my opinions. :D

the analogue thing is a good point
i love both the consoles, each getting half of my love, but sony made a big faux pas when it came to fps' you need two or at least it should have been under the buttons, whoopsie!
i will probably end up with both, itll take a lot of saving though.
I dont think we can judge a console by size or graphic power.
how can you judge the two, their both aimed at different genres and people.
if you like one of the two get it, just dont have a go at the otherone

just my opinion

~Paul

btw: an argument about what has the better fmv is stupid. who cares

Bahhahahahahahahhahahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahha!!!

I'm sure an easily made medium compared to nintendo's exclusive custom format costs so much more to use in comparison  and as for ports....

Untold legends, port? Nope.

Dynasty warriors (new game in the series) Port? nope.

Mercury? nope.

Lumines? Nope.

Metal gear acid? Nope.

Death Jr? Nope.

Coded arms? nope.

Infected? Nope.

Twisted metal: Head on? (new game in the series) nope.

Wipeout pure? nope.

Darkstalkers Chronicles: Chaos tower? (I've never HEARD of it on any other platform at least) pretty sure it's not.

Rengoku: The Tower of Purgatory? Nope.

Armored core: Formula Front? Nope.

I can keep this up for a while

(And in my humble opinion, i'd rather play mercury than some game recycleing the guts of yoshi's island :D )

ALL OF YOU LISTEN, IF you HAVE NOT played a DS and a PSP than SHUT THE F*** up, because you don't know what your talking about.

Mario 64 best game of all time? LOL thats a good one, maybe for a 10 yr old. I haven't even played more than one level. Theres so many better games its not funny.

And the graphics and sound thing? You forget gaming is a visual and audio medium as well as interactive. No Graphics and sound do not make games, but they increase the experience immensely. How you can prefer playing ANY DS game over any average PSP game, is beyond me.

You should know gameplay is only one part. Thats what makes crappy games like Doom 3 worth playing. Its never about gameplay only and it never will be. Its an art form not some formulaic crap.

EDIT: Im out of this discussion, its gotten out of hand, I mean people reckon the DS is smaller the the PSP. Stuff it, the DS ROCKS!!!!!! that should make you happy, though i still wont buy one.
