I'm all for perfectly tuned makefiles/compilation, but I would love it even more if it was a simple download to get the binary, especially since we have a common platform in mind.I *used* to think that... with a modern cpu, its simply not the case, sure I use some binary packages like firefox and libre-office, but they are both giganourmous sized projects (some would say too large...)
Properly configure your make.conf and now-a-days the overhead of Gentoo simply isn't what it used to be... and certainly more than worth the sheer responsiveness you get - even the wife said "its like having a new computer" - and let me tell you she's *always* right ;-)
Personally, I would find it interesting to have FatdogArm on the Pyra -- ridiculously quick boot times, OS runs in the RAM. Programs start real quick that way. You can also minimize the amount of times you write to disk, to enhance the lifetime of your SD card. I'd be curious to see how Gentoo compares to Fatdog in terms of speed and responsiveness.
