Gaming Device Names....

I've never been able to figure out how the Wii went from being the "Nintendo Revolution!" to the Nintendo Wii.

The Japanese written language is kind of pictorial and so they are big on visual puns. 'Wii' works as one of these because 'we' is the plural of 'I' which implies the console is for multiplayer fun. By writing it 'Wii' the 'i's are meant to represent two little people and that's the visual pun - 'We' but with two little people replacing the the 'e'.

Revolution is a great name for a console (at least in the West it is) right up until you have to release it's successor... If the replacement for the Wii is going to be more of the same but HD and 3D then it's really just an 'Evolution'.

You could argue that 'Revolution' was probably taking the piss out of Microsoft a bit - rotate 360 and you've done 1 revolution. Probably just over-thinking that though!

Well I suppose it's more original than Entertainment System, Super Entertainment System, and 64.
