F-day

i knew gamemaker wouldnt run but i wonder what the games use hardware wise. it was just a thought :D kinda figured it was a longshot

And also Dave, PLEASE stop comparing the PSP's 222mhz to ANY overclocked GP32's speed. THERE IS NO COMPARISON! The reason being the GP32 has only the one CPU and no other hardware like a seperate GPU like the PSP has, also the PSP has 4x as much RAM (it IS 32MB right?? I forget). So yes there is MUCH potential for better emulation from the PSP than from even a 200mhz + GP32.

I wasn't comparing them really. Yes the PSP is better hardware as long as you get one with no dead pixels. I was just saying that once an emu is perfect it won't be "more perfect" on a PSP. Thus, the GP32 is still viable as an emu platform, for the 8-bit stuff. Yes the PSP is better hardware. If it can go to 333 currently that will be great, even if the batteries last 1 hour at that speed, just plug it in. I just hope they crack the 1.5 FW soon though.

Another thing that the GP32 had going for it is the native resolution of the screen, which is very close in size to many of the consoles (pixel x pixel wise). The PSPs screen is much more dense (pixel wise), and the native resolution of the consoles often looks small, not to mention the screen is 16x9, leaving you with black lines on the side. Just say that more code needs to be written for PSP emus to resize/expand the screen... if so desired.

Cheers! :p

You can do screen stretching. This can be funky on LCDs unless you do anti-aliasing. When you do AA though then the image appears fuzzy. So it does look sharper at 1:1 which is the best option.

yes you are right, we need a sam coupe emulator ;)

I second that, As the Sam Coupe could emulate a spectrum very well because of it`s z80b processor, Big brother to the spectrums z80a processor. :p

Yeah totally agree about that, i know the Sam Coupe could run Speccy games, unsure how many individual games for that machine there were but i heard there were a few. Either way its 100% more intelligent to have a Sam Coupe emulator than a QL one !!!

Honestly dont wish to go on about it but some people ! If i had a quite obscure computer from years ago which no one would really be bothered about with an emulator for it i wouldnt be selfish saying 'yes yes do an emulator for my.....' !

A QL emulator ! Pah whatever next ! (And this coming from a Speccy fan !)

I started programming on a Spectrum 48K with rubber buttons (in 1983?) and never had a QL. But when the QL was released I was certainly impressed of it's specs. I must admit that I know nothing about the programs that where published for this computer.
But I don't understand why you are so negative about the QL. For me, an emulator is always good as it can revive some good souvenirs even if the purpose of the emulated computer wasn't exactly to play. Actually there is still people working on the QL.
And I never asked for a QL emulator, is just that some people seems to think that with the emus that we have for the GP32, all the work is done. It was just an idea for people more open-minded.

And I'm sure that the majority of the people that have seen the GP32 on the spanish store shelves thinks that the GP32 is a quite obscure console.

If i only made games and other programs expecting that every body would like them, I would had never programed my games or other libraries.

I was heavily into the Spectrum in the 80's and obviously love the emulators for them now. Crash was one of my favourite magazines of all time.

The QL was designed as a business machine (funnily enough so was the Spectrum) and featured a fair bit in the early Speccy magazines in those years but mainly business packages. There was the odd game but i cant think of one advert in Crash by a software house which said QL only. All the games 99.9% of them were always for the Spectrum.

I'm not negative about the QL but for someone to take a lot of time and to create an emulator and for what ? To please 3 or so former QL owners of a few people who were curious.

I love emulators on most machines but surely before a QL emulator we should get then an Oric/Acorn/Dragon emulator which had a whole range of games before someone bothers to create one for the QL. There may be people still working on the QL but thats 0.1% compared to people playing on Speccy emulators or writing games for them.

I dont think 'all the work is done' for emulators on the GP32, many can be improved, many other more obscure machines (eg Oric/Dragon) could be created if it was really needed before anyone thinks of doing something like the QL.

The GP32 is quite obscure and still 'underground' yet thanks to the emulators for it there are thousands of games. What would the QL add to it ? Even the recent ZX81 emulator has games for it as many people had this for gaming, what next ? An Amstrad PCW which was used strictly for word processing ?! Whats the point in emulating that ?

Not saying everything has to be for the masses but if someone is going to create a new emulator lets at least make one worthwhile

Exactly, which is why Megadrive games look better in DrMD than on my Xbox with a flat widescreen TV!

Calm down, psj3809 - I don't any developer is currently reading through this thread thinking "What emulator shall I do next?"

It's just a case of people expressing what they would *like* to see emulated. It's not being selfish...

I spent ages expressing my desire to get Lynx emulation, when it seemed that the general opinion was that it would never be possible, but out of the blue pops GpLynx!

I'm totally calm, obviously because of the way you can read in forums you might think i have steam coming out of my ears but not at all !

I'm a huge Speccy fan, a QL emulator would be fun but i dont think many people would use it and if someones gonna make the time to create a new emulator i think a better one could be done first (Eg BBC).

A Lynx emulator was a very good idea as there were many good games for that. My point was basically there were no good games at all for the QL so whats the point ?!

At this moment in time we're facing one of the best moments in GP32 history !! Ryleh is soon to release his new emulators which look very very good so i cant wait. Great time to be a GP32 fan

And your point is ?!?

If someone is going to code 'an obscure machine' emulator then might as well do something like a Dragon or Oric which had at least over 100 games for it rather than the QL which hardly had one at all.

A BBC emulator would be nice as theres a huge collection of games for that system including many good ones.

More emulators the better but surely you would do the most popular one or the one with the most games. Eg BBC then Dragon then Oric then maybe QL.

Bit like a pop group releasing a new album and then their first song is some obscure acoustic piece of tat from 10 years ago. Odd

I should think coders code emulators, because they might have fond memories of them, or because it's a challenge, a fun thing to do. Not because some machine was popular, and might be appreciated more by any community.

That's what I wanted to say. Usually I code for fun. It's better when you know that a lot of people will like what you do. But usually I code for myself, what I want and how I want.

I wish I could code :( I have tons of ideas for projects that could make the GP32 very useful. None of my ideas are games or emus though. Coding is so tough though

I've coded a few things in my time and yes in some ways they were really for myself but i do like to create something where a lot of people would enjoy it.

To get back to the original point yes someone might want to code their own QL Emulator but the main fact is that there isnt one as there just isnt enough games (if any) for that computer.

Well, you can still help by giving us programmers the ideas we need. Thats what Cool Ideas and Other Wishes is for. I look in there sometimes, looking for stuff that may be easy to code as a first project.

edit: typos

I can draw up some graphics for things too. All of my ideas for programs are PDA type apps like programmable graphing calculators, unit conversion programs (convert temp, length, mass, force, etc.) Address books, Dictionaries, stuff like that that could make the GP32 useful for engineers, students, and everyone else. Not too many coders are interested in that. It would be quite easy to code too, not alot of fancy sprite and AI code needed there. I have thought of using one of those game engines like Zot! to do it but I don't think my "skillz" are even good enough for those :(

I was thinking of porting Graphcalc a while ago. But then I looked at the code and saw that it was closely tied to the windows GUI and MS VC++
