I know there's a few addicts on this board and I was thinking about getting the game and joining in the fun.

Just wondering if I should buy it now for my PC (Athlon xp 3000+, GeForce 68000GT, 1 gig ram) or wait until I get a 360.

I quite like the idea of playing it with the xbox wireless controller, but maybe the controls work better on the PC version. Maybe my pc won't even run it at a good rate (my lcd panel is 1280x1024 native so I'd like to run it at that).

Any thoughts?

Using the CoolBits hack I achieved pretty good framerates (30+ fps) at 1440x900 on pretty much the exact same system, high texture res, most settings on, HDR even. If you switch to Bloom, set textures to medium, or lower some settings, it should be smooth (and extremely good looking) at your native res.

The controls are decent, they have streamlined the UI to work with the Xbox better but with PC mods coming out soon, I'd save my money and go for the PC version.

pc, just for the mods alone its worth it,
the game haves so many annoying bugs i would get realy pissed with the console version, but for pc you can get little mods to fix most things.

Im running a a64 3500+ 1gb ram, 6600gt sli on max settings and get ~50-100+fps, through i run it at 1024*768, so a 6800gt should be fine, jsut make sure to use the most recent nvidia driver.

Especialy for the non english version the console version is a nogo, thats the most cruel localisation i have EVER seen in my live, its just makes you want to puke, luckyly there are fan mods that mostly fix that.

My laptop plays Half life 2 100% perfect and call of duty 2 99% perfect.

Do you guys think it can run this game? Im really interested in getting it but am unsure if my crappy laptop can handle it..........

(btw i have a radeon 9000 video card I think).

a friend of mine worked on the game I could run the question past him and see what he says, though I'd assume any recent laptop (last year and a half) with a suitable amount of memory and a fair graphics card should play it but with many effects turned off/down.

Yeah I'd say it's on par with CoD2 if you don't turn on Bloom and ESPECIALLY HDR, it sucks framerate away like a Dyson on crack. It'll probably run at medium settings.

If you got that setup on your PC, it'd be a shame to waste it. ES: O looks lush on a good pc.

Are there any demos I can try first before I buy the game........I would hate to pay and see that it doesnt run. I guess in the worst case senario ill buy a used copy on ebay and install it. If it works ill keep it, if not then ill return it. I'll find a way.

Im going to college in 2 months so getting a desktop pc is out o fthe question for me. This laptop will have to do.

In fact, maybe ill try to upgrade the memory that comes with the grafix card. right now i think it's 32mb so it sucks

It's been my experience that Upgrading laptops isn't usually as easy as a desktop. I've been told mine cannot be upgraded past it's own onboard 16mb. Sure I can jack the system ram up to 512 which I've done the first month I had it but the video ram of the graphics controller will stay what it is for ever and switching it out is something that just dosent happen. Maybe that's just the case with my Geforce 460 Go but I only mention as a warning not to get your hopes up.

Well last year when I thought my laptop couldnt handle HL2 I looked into upgrading the video storage, and I know I can only upgrade to to 64 mbs so i guess its better than nothing. I was gonna go through with it but then i re-installed HL2 and it worked fine along with CoD2.

Maybe now ill upgrade. Thanks for the concern though alpha.

Depends on alot of things.

Do you like sitting at a desk playing games by typing on a keyboard and sliding a mouse or do you like to play with a wireless controller? The controls are perfectly fine on the 360 controller as it is. You have 2 analogs on the 360, one "analog" (mouse) and a keyboard on a PC, it comes down to preference.

Do you need mods? Is the standard game big enough for you?

Do you have an HDTV? If so the bigger screen is nice. If you have a standard old TV the low resolution would be painful. You can get a VGA cable to run the 360 on any computer monitor, or HDTV that supports PC input though.

Do you like to just pop in a disk and play or do you like to dick around with setups etc?

The 360 version supports bloom, HDR, and antialiasing all of at the same time the PC does not.

You can get higher resolutions with the PC, the 360 is only HDTV res at it's best.

Those are all good points. I am a PC gamer to the core, always have been. I've got a gaming "rig" built for speed.

But - for the first time I've favored a console over the PC.

The 360 does the job beautifully and with no hassles. I'm some 60 hours into the game playing on my plasma HDTV, and I couldn't be happier ;)

Supposedly there are mods being created to aid control on the PC version rather than just to muck around with the engine. I mentioned to my friend that someone else I spoke to wished there was a button specific to dropping items and he said that while he felt they should have spent more time on key bindings the mod community would surly pick up the slack in that department. He also told me things like their character animation left a lot to be desired because they didn't have a MoCap studio set up untill after they finished the game and they had so few animators that only one guy worked on the characters specifically.

I guess they hadn't tried that combination. I don't have the game nor do I have any of the documentation which I have to assume they probably haven't read. I can only relate the disscussions I've heard. Like they said the eaiest way to drop something was to find a dead body or kill someone to drop it with them or something to taht effect which is when I mentioned that to my friend and he commented on the key bindings and mods.

It is a great game, but I have issues with some aspects and would therefore suggest to get the PC version for the mods.

For instance, I don't really like the scaled levelling which means that monsters levels and armour etc will scale with you or new monsters will appear on certain quests because you are a certain level. This essentially ruins the whole point of levelling. It also leads to certain stupidities, like it being possible to be a level 1 Arena Champion or complete the game without ever levelling. If I am Arena Champion, I want to feel like it and not have to fight hard against a bandit (whether I am level 1 or 20) just outside the Imperial City.

Theres a mod out that fixes that.

Thanks for all the comments everyone. I've decided to go with the PC version at the moment (mostly because I already have the PC and from the sound of it the game will play at least as well on that as on an xbox 360)

If it turns out to be as good as everyone says then I'll get it again when I finally get the 360. I know where DaveC's coming from, I'm a PC gamer in general but sometimes it's just nice to drop a disk in my xbox or gamecube and play with a really good gaming controller.

Mouse and keyboard works well, but sometimes a little too well. Like with halo, great on the xbox where you'd be spraying bullets all over and darting from cover to cover, mediocre on the pc where the mouse makes it all too easy to make every shot land.

Anyway, I'm rambling now... Thanks all :)
