Ds To Get A Redesign

it's not happening

Nintendo of Europe has told GamesIndustry.biz that there are no plans to unveil a redesigned version of the multi-million selling Nintendo DS handheld this week, despite rumours to the contrary.

Reports of a redesign began to emerge after online retailer Lik-Sang said Nintendo was planning to unveil the new unit at a press conference in Japan today. Lik-Sang's claims were backed up by Japanese retail sources.

But a Nintendo spokesperson has dismissed the reports, describing them as "pure rumour and speculation."

Here is my take on the matter:

Nintendo probably did plan on releasing a redesigned DS, but they are not going to at this point due to good sales. Once things start slowing down a little like they did with the GBA, then they'll release the new DS.

They need to redesign it. I have one and I hate the "ergonomics" of the thing. It is terrible to play for me, it is a brick. Hopefully they will improve the feel of it, and a decent sized screen would be nice too. As it is I haven't used it in months. I prefer my bug ridden, battery suckin' GP2X honestly.

I agree, the feel of the system is to be desired. It's almost top heavy....

playing mario kart gives bad cramp in my thumb holding the acelerate button down, i think the buttons are too near the edge of the machine.

I totally agree, and for the same reason, I stop playing GBA games on DS any more. Ergonamics is simply not there.

I agree that the DS is poorly designed but not as much as I used to. Personally, my thumb is sore after a nice session of Ridge Racer on PSP, so it's only natural the DS would be the same way.

But the buttons on the DS should be higher and less clicky (if possible with the clamshell design). That little lip where the colored part meets the graphite-colored bottom can be pretty painful, actually--sort of stabs you in the palm the whole time. And yeah, it's heavy (not as bad as PSP though..).

You do get used to it though, I remember thinking the same thing when i first got it and a copy of '64. Now i never notice it.

hey mods? how about you read the articles before you change the topics????HMMMM!!!!! It is going to get a redesign, just not this week. here's a quote

"But a Nintendo spokesperson has dismissed the reports, describing them as "pure rumour and speculation." However, although a redesign will not be revealed as soon as has been rumoured, it seems highly likely that Nintendo will unveil a new, more compact DS at some point in the near future."

So how about you change the title back from NOT to SOMETIME

is it only me or does anyone else keep accidentally keep turning the volume up/down with their little finger, and its hard to get it to a volume between either off or full blast? id love to see a re-design, id buy it.

Nope never had aproblem with the volume control.

the only problem i have with it is i get an ache between thumb and fore finger if i play with to long, with a non stylus game.

This is what we want...

i agree with those mock up pictures, we need the square corners cut to angled ones so it dont feel like holding a f*ckin tea tray while your playin it. also playing animal crossing with the stylus is impossible when you want to go up/left, your hand totally covers the screen.

I actually like that mock up. Sliding top screen for GBA games (and allowing single screen DS games, which could be bad or good, really..). Also, that allows nicer, less clicky buttons, which would feel a lot better with MKDS and other button-centric games.

Then again they could just remove the useless 2nd screen, it'd save on battery life and be less clumsy. But, thats not Nintendo's (at least the Nintendo I knew's) style as it would totally screw up compatibility.

I wouldn't say it's worthless. Maybe not as innovative as they want you to think, but it serves it purpose. At the very least, the screen allows for a passable (sometimes even better, like with Metroid: Hunters) alternative to an analog stick, which is tough to do well on a handheld... I hate that little analog nub on the PSP (though I think that placement of the nub has a lot to do with that, too..).

And you couldn't use touch screen control without two screens because your hand would obstruct the view too much.
