I'm a relativly new programmer and I'm thinking of making DICEWARS as my first GP2X project... link here: http://www.gamedesign.jp/flash/dice/dice.html
Think that will be easy enough? No movement systems or whatever, and the only hard part will be the ai, so I don't really know. Never coded AI before

That doesn't look TOO hard, as long as you plan well enough. That can be a key part to making your first application/game, plan what you want to be able to do and how you think you'll do it.
The AI part again would be best to plan then, think how YOU would play, then code that!

(I am now addicted to playing that, thanks!! ;))

Look forward to seeing what you come up with... (if you need a hand, there's the developer section and feel free to PM me... I can try to help :) )

that's a pretty cool game. Since it's turn based, don't forget to add a multiplayer option, so we can get angry at our best friends for ripping us off ^^. Maybe a two to four multiplayer hotseat version would be good for a first release. You can deal with AI afterwards...

Ok, thanks guys. I will start to make a general design of it and maybe think some of the AI.

that sounds nuts! i think for a game like this you'd use some sort of a minimax algorithm, no?

edit: long-winded explanation of minimax deleted. this page: http://ai-depot.com/articles/minimax-explained/ explains it better BUT they say that it's for two-player games. hmmmm. i'll look into it some more.

maybe check this out: http://www.devmaster.net/forums/archive/in...php/t-1598.html
here's another: http://jrisk.sourceforge.net/index.shtml

i wish i could find stuff that isn't java...

here's something a little more general than minimax. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brute-force_search

of course, risk has some randomness in there, so i don't know what a perfect strategy would entail. but the core of AI seems to me to be having the cpu evaluate the consequences of each choice and picking the best one.

I'll have to take a long look at that sometime soon :)
Thanks for the info.

Jesus, that had a smart AI. One of them set up a weaker enemy as a barrier of sorts, building up to full and then piledriving into me. Have fun coding this game, it should be a good learning experience.
