People asking for pictures... The design is not completed yet. But why don't you post some ideas about the outlook of the new device?.. Some sketches maybe? We can catch something good to add in while we can. ;)

It has a 4.3" widescreen display and a keyboard. The rest is as you know.
What happens if someone posts a design idea that you really like and use? Will they get a free on? :p

*has ideas*

really? i need to try that. Still it would be great to have a hassle free real realtime clock... having it as an alarm clock would definately be cool!
yeah, really. Google it.
But a real battery clock will open (or not wreck) possibilities..

It'll be cool to have a nice rss viewer on the go...

Anyone know of any open source/ free equivalent of avantgo?

Found that pretty nifty when I had a pocket pc (had 2 ipaq 5450s but the touchscreen broke on both of them in exactly the same way :)

Something like this might look good as a sort of "Today" page... :)

Built-in A/V-Out? Yes for sure... with a simple yet usable cable included inside the package.
I think the whole A/V-out with included cable thing was established early on in this thread. Still no word on actual capabilities though, mainly:

Is it possible to use the TV-out without shutting off the internal screen? Using different resolutions on internal screen and TV-out? Using internal screen as a HUD?
Is it possible to output RGB for optimal picture quality? RGB and audio to a SCART connector?

It's all in the details...

<Columbo> Oh, just one more thing... </Columbo>

It'd be neat to have a sort of downloadable "demo suite" that could be used to show off the device's capabilities. A few technical demos and freeware games and apps, showing off the power and flexibility of the device. Think of it as an "Appetizer card". This could be bundled with the device (on CD perhaps) or made available as a download. Just please don't waste internal memory on it like GPH did with the "Value pack" firmware.

BTW. Can we have a joystick rather than a d-pad... *runs for cover*
I cover you! tak tak tak! :p
It's not that I'm against D-pad, but I prefer a well manufactured stick.
Oh noooo... Here's the DaveC 3000 comin'!

So, who's porting Firefox? :)
EDIT: Will it be fast enough if take the old 1.5 source and strip it down?

Firefox  I'd rather not have a resource devouring monster on that machine. Try running FF on a older machine like a P3-450 with 128MB Ram and you know what i mean.

There are better options: Dillo f.e., Konqueror depends heavily on kde-libs which makes it difficult. But Opera for example if it can be gotten to work on that machine. -> Qtopia port

Newer libraries are backwards-compatible, so all old stuff will run.
With all the different linuxes out there, and all the millions of different versions of libraries - this would be impossible to ensure 100% compatibility. Imagine I develop a game today, and build it using current libraries - will those libraries still be guaranteed to behave in the same manner today as in five or ten years time.
If major changes occur which serverely break backwards compatibility usually a new major version number is used. And the old version of the library can still reside in the /lib folder for any programs needing the old one. There is no need to panic about dynamical linking. And yes: there are issues, but the advantages overweight the disadvantages i guess.

I prefer a D-pad but if the devs are considering a joystick then one just like a neo geo pocket colour joystick would be excellent. It was an awesome controller

Errm - we're not using different Linuxes, we'll have our own Linux on the system, so this definately shouldn't be a problem.

They mentioned the controls would be digital...

I do just that regularly, and it works fine.

I don't mind what the controls are like as long as it will allow for FPS games like quake 3. Imo, the most optimal setup would be a dpad and an analog stick, but what do I know

I'm not talking about 2.0, its seriously bloated. 1.5 with some heave strip down would work, wouldn't it?

Firefox would draw a lot of customers, I think.

Well... We keep the best parts as secret. ;)

3D in a handheld it's weird to me.
I've played 3D nintendo ds with touchscreen and it is not very good...
The same with psp, that analog thing is strange. Nothing like a keyboard and mouse.

Are trackballs good for 3D?
I've never played a fps with a trackball.

Trackballs seems robusts and cheap. Can it be a good substitute for mouse in a handeld console?

Perhaps if you could change between d-pad, joystick, trackball in a kind of slot for controls... :p

Oh noooo... Here's the DaveC 3000 comin'!Of course if we're looking at emulation then ideally we'd have both digital... and a keyboard... and two analogues sticks and... it will look like this (we can fit the screen between the steering wheels) :

EDIT:
Heh - thanks Alex - image removed - can't embed it! (not that I don't like David Hasselhof... apologies if you have nightmares)

An important thing is that nothing gets loose in time. You know, the worst thing about the gp2x's stick isn't that it sucks(, which it does). It gets loose from its platform in some months, making it even suckier.

So... Don't do that
