Cpu Speed Not Resetting After Powersave Mode

ED posted to the SNES thread going on in the general forum that there's a bug where setting the speed to 650 actually sets it -1, which does bad things apparently. A fix is forthcoming. I wonder if this is in any way related.

Actually the other way around. It shouldn't be turning the screen back on if it's in sleep mode. This bug is the result of two features designed to do two different things that only seem related. I believe ED is working on a fix, but he's got things that actually cause problems that need to be fixed. This is just a minor annoyance that will no doubt be fixed eventually.

We had some discussion about leaving sleep, and the conclusion appeared to be on the side of opening the lid restores speed to normal. That makes it possible to sleep with the lid open, and makes the power switch operation insensitive the the current (invisible) state of the powersave flag. The lid then becomes a sub-set of the power switch functionality. I have mine working like this already, and it's much better. A second flick is the way the PSP and every other device does that. The only devices that exit sleep mode when opening actually enter sleep mode when closed, not with some switch. That's like saying when you are putting away your gun, you flick the safety on and put it in your guncase, but when you take it out of the guncase, the safety should automatically be off without you having to flick it.

ok, I know ED already fixed the 650=garbage thing and the new hotfix will take care of it but I thought it would be fun to try and make a script that detected all the garbage mhz settings. This is my first bash script so go easy on me:

I was trying to figure out a way to only output the garbage mhz settings but was hitting a dead end with grep it seemed, does anyone know of a way? if someone else wanted to try this script, I'd be very curious if the results were the same or not (or if it even works :D ) you'd have to change a few things, namely the paths and the ending mhz(if your top speed is different than 850), but I think that would be easy enough. Also I wanted a full test so I did 14-850mhz, but that could be trimmed to say 500-[yourtopspeed]mhz. The lower mhz settings are less conclusive anyways.

I might install gnuplot (or whatever its called) and make a graph out of these results just for the experience, but this is as far as I go tonight, need sleepy :p

[edit] I almost forgot to list the test conditions. I ran the script on a fresh restart and no wifi. I just opened the terminal and ran the script. If you have other things running, you won't get the same result as me.

using sudo to run the script was working for me but I suppose adding it to the script makes more sense. like I said, big time beginner here :D

You can use gnumeric to make a plot easily. First grep "root" yourlog | awk {'print $3'} > newfile. Copy the lines of newfile in mousepad, paste in gnumeric. The import dialog is too big, you have to hold shift and move it down (careful, xfwm might crash...). Then select the column (or leave the current selection) and use insert -> chart -> lines. Gnuplot would be as easy as gnuplot -e "plot 'newfile' with lines" -p.

So it looks like every 13th value (13mhz, 26mhz, 39mhz... 598, 611, 624, 637, 650 ...) causes this -1 bug.
The other interesting thing is that, if the graph is accurate, -1 is being interpreted as around 125mhz. Anything less than 125Mhz spikes CPU usage down (suggesting it was faster for that spike), anything after 125mhz spikes up (meaning it was slower for that spike.

About the spikes, I manually tested 4 or 5 of them and the data does indeed seem to be meaningful. Each one cause the weird 1mhz-like, really slow mhz bug result. I don't understand why it's causing the spikes but they are definitely related. I originally just wanted to monitor the cpu to see what was going on during the mhz bug. I noticed the spike in program usage so I made this script to monitor it. It doesn’t matter what program you monitor. I originally monitored audacious while it was running (which produced comical sounds from a Pink Floyd song and took forever :p ) and it returned the same results just at a higher usage %.

The down spike are indeed interesting, I would guess that means the bug is clocking the cpu to around 125 mhz during the spikes?

I have the script on my Pandora only, too lazy to get it. I just made it more rough (output to stdout) as I like it that way, nothing advanced, rather the opposite.

You tell the OS what CPU speed you want, but it doesn't go directly into the CPU as that number. I don't know exactly how, but it has to do some math to push the desired values into the CPU. It could be that the clockspeed is determined by a place in memory, and the correct bits need to be flipped. This could also be where the voltage is set, maybe. So maybe in their attempts to keep it at OPP3, it introduced a bug? This is just a complete guess, so no one take this for truth.

And then it turns out, the answer is 42! :D

does anyone know what script or program actually changes the mhz? the script for the mhz slider just changes the [cpu_mhz_max] file that I was referencing to change the mhz in my script. cpu_mhz_max is just a text file with the number for the current clock speed in it and nothing else. Some other process must reference and check it to actually change the speed of the cpu but I couldn't find it.
