A crazy french guy just did a nice conference about OP in an IT meeting.

Too bad he didn't posted it himself :/

Nice haircut BTW ^^.

EDIT :

The video was reuploaded with a better resolution.

I also found the original mpeg with the best quality (1,6G) :

boo hoo I didnt make the dev list, wawa wawa......

ok im over it :p

Actually looks like the list he had was pretty old as some of them have dropped off.

i would highly suspect he is a member here or at gp32x hacing an F200 and all. I wish I would have thought to do a webcam over projector when i did my show and tell.

I guess, it would be nice to have pandoras built under "license" by other manufacturers.

He even talked about marketing and so.

Looks like he would like this to be a joined project with various branches of his university.

We wouldn't want other manufacturers to stuff anything up and possibly make OpenPandora Company liable for any mistakes and whatnot.

When a device is produced under license, it's the licensee that's liable for the product, not the licensor.

Moreover, we have many proofs that the actual "original" product is fully working.

IIRC the ZX Spectrum and many other micro-computers had some licensed clones.

Ok, ok, ok...but all I want, really is everything to work out fine and to be as reliable as the 3DO manufacturing days.

You see, I have little trust in other licensed manufacturers to 'competently' build such a complex piece of technology like Pandora.

Maybe, they can join in on Pandora 2 instead.

Well, that's a good argument you've got there.

Now, I'll go back to the "wait and see" status… Mainly "wait for my pandora" to be accurate

Think it's more a pedagogic project. And he doesn't intend to make money, he wants to promote his IUT and OP.

You know, this got me thinking... OPT could just skip the assembly and ship kits.

Packaging might be a little bulkier, but it could potentially save heaps in labour costs.

And to a certain type of customer (i.e. ME) the DIY aspect would really add to the cool factor.

Imagine excitedly opening a box and having a bunch of bits to assemble before you can play with it... I would be happier then an 8 year old on Christmas morning!

Edit:

I know, it's never going to happen. But I'm really warming to the idea none the less. Other benefits include:

  • It ties in nicely with the talk of Pandora eventually being upgradeable, or at least having reusable parts.
  • Would eliminate RMA's due to build issues.
  • Would reduce the burden of warranty on OPT... they would only need to cover parts.
  • Would potentially lead to more cool hacks and mods.
  • It's totally retro baby!

Also ignores the fact that assembly is not the bottleneck here. If they were swimming in boards and couldn't keep up with the assembly, I'm sure they may consider it (if for even a brief moment) but it doesn't really make a difference speed wise at this point.

You ARE kidding, right? If the Pandora was sold like that I wouldn't bother.
No B.P. I am not kidding - just daydreaming. I said I knew it would never happen, but I would happily upgrade my pre-order to a 'DIY-Premium' if given the option.

I'm actually kind of disappointed that you think it's such a horrible idea. What do you see in an 'Open' device if you are so against tinkering with it? Don't get me wrong... I totally accept your opinion is normal. I know most people would rather pay somebody else to service their car then do it themselves. But I not only do I enjoy doing it, I don't trust anybody but me to do the job properly - especially for safety-critical stuff like brakes.

In much the same way, I know I can assemble a dinky little computer to a higher standard then a "village hall" assembly line. It is understandable that when you hand-build a couple of hundred or more units a week mistakes are made... screws are over-tightened... tobacco leaves fall into the device... units ship with two 'A' buttons... One way to eliminate these problems it to have everything assembled by robot, another is to just let enthusiasts build the damn thing for themselves.

Like I say - 'tis but a dream - not an actual proposal. Don't bother telling me it will never happen, I know.

@gfrancisdev: OPT's warranty issues would be reduced if you build it yourself. Much like when you build your own PC, the manufacturer would not be responsible for your work... only that the parts they supply are fit for purpose.
