Brand New Blog Update!

I also find it weird that everything but games is fluff. I'm just guessing here, but I'm thinking I'll do just as much 'fluff' as playing games. If it browses the web, does chat, and does simple text editing I might have my computer off for days at a time unless there is something I need a larger screen for.
Correction: A larger, non-standard def screen! (TV-out will be handy).

Yeah, the notion is ridiculous. I use my PS3 for web browsing, chat and music / video just as much as I use it for gaming. I think the core functionality of the device will have a big effect on how often people will use it. When I unpacked my GP2X from its box it was a paperweight. Only after loading software to it, it proved useful. I hope that the Pandora will be useful even without loading external software to it. The included applications are as important as anything.

Anyone who's arguing against "fluff" because you don't like it is silly, IMO. There's nothing wrong, nay, it is better, that Pandora has a kickass, full-featured GUI out of the box. I just hope that it doesn't slow up the release at all.

Six weeks later and there are still people who don't get what the original poll was really about.

I don't think I posted in that thread, but I think that we'll have enough fullspeed emulators at launch (NES, SNES, PSX and other 8/16bit systems are fine) to keep us occupied until more optimizations come.

I think having a solid GUI and set of basic apps at launch is pretty important to a lot of people, even if it delays fullspeed emulation of some later systems for a month or two.

Both gui and apps will happen in time. So whats the point in arguing. I say let the devs decide what they want to work on.
Agreed. The blog simply states that the focus has shifted from software to the GUI - for now. This gets twisted into 'the release date is being pushed back for fluff'. Whatever.

The team is making the best decision for Pandora, which (I imagine) takes into account the impact it will have on launch as well as its long term prospects. I understand where the 'fluff' haters are coming from, but a good GUI will allow Pandora to bridge the gap between niche and mainstream. This will improve the platform for everyone.

Fluff on, team Pandy.

Yeah, that was a weird poll. ED in the first post was saying one thing (poll is for "GUI/apps/firmware vs. emulators"), and Craig was saying another (poll is for "GUI vs. emulators").

I never did end up voting in that poll because I wasn't sure what I was voting for.

Squidge and icurafu thank you for clarification. Whatever devs will choose, I hope it'll be easy to port apps. An ideal situation from my point of view is if you need to get an app ported you have to compile it's source code with proper tools (gcc) and that's it. I know that in some cases it won't be that easy coz one will have to adopt an app to :pandora1: s a bit non-standard resolution. I mean I hope that requirements mentioned in the steaky will not be extended to "ports require source code AND a programmer to rewrite it".
By the way did I mentioned it earlier.. whatever gui, keyboard layout and programs will be available from launch I'll be buying :pandora1: asap. That endless waiting is killing me, can't wait to get my hands on that sexy little piece of pure happiness. :)

Hopefully, the "a bit non-standard resolution" shouldn't be a problem. It'll be optional, but by default, an app expected to run at 256x512 (or whatever) will just run at that resolution, and the OS will manage the user-specified preferred scaling.

Will scaling work with any app? Some apps created with 1024x768 in mind might cause problems. Though in this case I'll be happy to be proved wrong.

Also, an x server means ssh+X11 tunneling out of the box. At leaset, I hope it does. Maybe kdrive can't do that...
Anywho, in theory, if it doesn't run ON the Pandora, you may be able to get away with running it on a tower over network.

Any app written to work with the OS/GUI should work fine.

Apps that write directly to the linux frame buffer interface (dev/fb*) or directly to an X-window will not be affected, and left alone.

Well now we know.

But I'm still not 100% sure. Were we voting for which GUI was to be focused on and activated by default?

Yeah, it really seemed like nobody was on the same page. :p Hopefully, now, there is some clarification. People voted for the look, feel, and functionality of the device's firmware, no matter how it was initially intended to. It is nothing to be dismissive about.

I get the feeling Craig is a bit miffed about the poll result also, but I think this is the best way to go. Apart from anything, whatever the original intent of the poll, the question that was answered was not "do you want fluff?". The question that I think most GUI voters answered was "Do you feel pretty confident that emus and games will come, and want a solid useable framework for it all to be built on?".

What I think is very important is that the firmware is as much of a solid and flexible foundation for future Pandora development as possible. It very much needs to be specifically optimized for the unique kind of device the Pandora will be;

a computer:
-that has most of it's memory on removeable media
-that can drop in and out of wifi connectivity
-that has advanced power management and suspend states
-with completely unique controls

a game console:
-that supports multitasking
-that is also a UMPC (or insert acronym)

e.g. in an ideal world:
  • if I'm playing a game and an reminder that I set in my calendar app comes up, the firmware should provide an elegant way to handle that - pause my game, let me opt to reload kdrive...
  • I should be able to set button, keyboard and lid shutting preferences in one place and not need to in every app or game.
  • If an SD card accidentally gets popped out, the firmware should cope, or if I try to unmount one it should let me know potential consequences.
  • Avoid as much as possible situations where "Developers can just handle that in software" - the volume and battery light on GP2X show that really mean "Some applications won't handle that in software"
  • and etc... much more stuff than I can think of.
...but I digress. My point is that people will never find and optimize this stuff while working on apps and emus. There is a very good chance that it will be while working on a GUI. Obviously development on everything will be ongoing, I think this approach has the best chance of producing the best Pandora possible at release time and beyond.

Hey, if nothing else, it looks like the change of direction will get us X out of the box. That's got to be a result. Sure it would have happened anyway pretty soon, but this means it will be ready and better at launch and people can start getting X apps onto it right away. Great news, great blog post.

Actually, ED never stated Firmware, only GUI/apps. He said that the GUI/apps would be updated in later firmware updates even if we voted for Games/Emus. It was Orkie who was claiming it was for firmware.

Brilliant. Not only could we not decide what we were arguing about in the original thread, now we have another thread arguing about what we argued about.

As some devs already have a Pandora and are developing for it, it's time to find out what's more important for you guys for Pandora release.

Do you want a good menu system superior to the gp2x one featuring a good audio and video player and other stuff OR do you want to have a basic menu system and a lot of fullspeed emulators for the first release?

What is more important to you?

(Don't worry, the rest will come with later firmware releases, it's just what you want to have as a start).
It also seemed to change slightly through the discussion as Craig included apps in the game/emu side of the equation and added firmware to the GUI.

Just to gauge the consequences of what we're all asking for, how much will emulators suffer if attention is to shift towards GUI?
Well it shifts who gets the next batch of dev units.

Do we sent them to game/app/emu authors or to people who want to work on the firmware/gui?
Somehow, I can't see us agreeing to agree now.
