Brand New Blog Update!

Craig, remember to use spell checker! i.e imeditelly! (Immediately) I hope it was the Jack Daniels doing the spelling!

Thanks for the information though, it keeps everyone happy and calm before the final product gets ever closer and released.

Sounds great about the change in direction of the GUI, I hope it won't delay anything further though.

Just as a note, I tried to get a beagleboard on Friday, and they're currently on back-order at Digi-Key. I wonder if they'll be stocking the Rev. C (w/ USB Host) boards when they get more in.

Other than that, I am very excited about seeing a pandora in the flesh. As well as some screens or video of the GUI.

"The original plan was keep the GUI simple and put as much time and effort in to gettting as much cool software running as possible, but after a poll we have changed direction."

Looks like the fluff lovers won :(

I think in terms of GUI vs. Emu ports, there have been several emus ported already, and those dev's have said that it was pretty quick to port their emus from the GP2X. And even though they are unoptimized, they are still running twice as fast as the GP2X versions. We have not seen anything from the GUI yet. I think they made the right choice.

The blog post says the gui will be kdrive, but kdrive is a simplified x-server not a gui. Does this mean there will be no set default GUI and you just pick any of the GUI window managers that work on kdrive or what?

Its not the end of the world here, just rest assured that the GUI is going to kick ass and that developers already have quite a few titles running on the hardware. Everybody won, thanks to the fact that the devs got their devboards fairly early.

Question: Are we just going to have kDrive, or is the firmware getting a fully blown, possibly accelerated X11 as well?
I've read around a bit, but I'm not quite sure if kDrive can get the 2D/3D Acceleration going... if possible, that would be optimal.

Using an Xserver doesn't mean you can't keep the GUI simple... it just means you can immediately e.g. firefox on it if you want on it :p
And, kdrive xservers are lightweight (i.e. not like full-blown X.org).

It can, the best example is openmoko's Xglamo.

Yeah, that would be much better IMO than using a fully blown X server. Thanks.

Cool blog update! However, the change in direction for the GUI is disappointing, as it will more than likely cause yet another unnecessary delay. :( Don't get me wrong, I'd love such a full-featured desktop environment on Pandora, but that's something I expected for someone in the community to make after the release.

So long as there's not another delay this is sweet, but if there is, I'd question the need for such a GUI at launch.

Just a note: A link to the actual blog post you are talking about would be appreciated. I think many people around here are ignorant to the fact that indeed new people visit here every now and then and we do want them to stick around and even buy a pandora.

I myself do not know where this blog, which is seldom updated, is. My first try will be www.openpandora.org, after that i will be clueless.

I would also like to add that without "fluff lovers" the pandora userbase will be even smaller (read more expensive pandora). I'm not saying it should be mainstream, but there is not reason to have it butt-ugly ;) And it could of course come after lanuch too.

Fluff?? Nothing to do with it?? X server is fluff, isn't it? I'm gona throw my X away and use bash then. Where can I find a text based web browser?
Lol. This is funny. If :pandora1: gets released without X it will be rendered useless in my opinion.
