As many of you may be aware, recently, I took a trip to Louisville, KY.

For me, this is 699.8 miles one way, it took eleven hours, all in one piece, stopping only for gas, bathroom, and drinks - usually all three in the same stop.

On the way down, I used my Zune, plugged into the car's AC Outlet (my GPS was occupying the cigarette lighter) and piped the music thru my car speakers via the cassette deck. (Yes, my car has cassette and CD - to be honest, I never use the CD, would just as soon have cassette only, or even just a port to plug in something like Zune.)

Anyway, I did this, because I was worried the battery might not last long enough to do it with my Pandora.

On my way home, though, I threw caution to the wind.  I started out from Louisville, KY - using the Pandora at 86% charge.

I made better time on the way home, getting home in 10 1/2 hours.

During the trip, even when I stopped, I left the music player playing on the Pandora.  so it was running consistently for the entire 10 1/2 hours of the trip.

I got home, and the bastard was still at 46% charge!!  I used only 40% of battery power on a 10 1/2 hour trip, consistently playing music!

Best joke of the day ;) .
Hey...we WERE talking about over eleven hours of continuous active use playing music now!!  I was honestly not sure I had enough battery power!!

On the trip home, that was when I threw caution to the wind.  And was amazed at the final result.

They must of been short songs... :p

Welcome back!!

Depending on the efficiency of the player, a pandora might be able to manage 40h music playback B)

Also, you may have quite some charge left when it claims to be empty. Just use system info to check that the voltage stays above 3.4V or so and you should be safe. On my unit I can usually go to "-10%" (as reported by sysinfo, the battery status on the taskbar always reports something between 0% and 100%).

40h ... Really amazing.

It is true that if you remove USB, ... wifi, ... it has a long time.

If I dev on it, I must reload after 10h

Your battery is defective, sell it to me!

_wb_ has a really defective battery. It charges above 4000 mAh and can go to -!0%.

He should go for a new battery ;) .

Well, I had the lid closed the whole time, but still 10.5 hours of music and it used 40% of my battery power.

By my math, then, I should be able to get about 25 hours of music play on a full charge.

Even that is awesome, let alone possibly 40 hours.

Now if we could just figure out how to use the DSP properly, the CPU goes dead and we nearly double the battery life.

Awsome story! I am also a bit too cautious with the battery and find it to last a lot longer than what the percentage in the taskbar suggests.

Which one is the best player when it comes to battery-life?

I like audacious, but it has problems with special characters, so I often use DeaDBeeF now.

I use Audacious.

I had problems with Rockbox, the only other one I actually gave a fair tryout to.

The only thing I wish Audacious would do is allow you to advance song or go back song using the shoulder buttons and with lid closed.  Of course, there would also have to be a way to disable that feature for those who like to wear their Pandy in their pocket for music...mine stays in a cubby below my car's ashtray, so no problems.

Rockbox - I could never get it to put more than 1000 songs into a playlist at any one time.  I have almost 2000 total songs.

Plus, there are some audio clips on Rockbox that end up in your playlists and I could never quite figure out how to get rid of them.

The controls on Rockbox left something to be desired in terms of responsiveness, or quite frankly logic in how to work them out.

I'd be interested if anyone had something better than audacious, but, for me, right now, that is what works.

I've been using the deadbeef player for music duties. I can clock the Pandora down to the lowest speed allowed and it still has no problem playing FLAC. With wifi off and screen closed, this potentially makes for some obscenely long battery life.

I've never done "the math" of course, as I've invariably flipped it open, clocked it back up, then fired up some software or other.
