Garn, hack right into the bugger.
The lip will become substantially thinner (~50%) but retains enough strength do its job. The hole has to be at least 2mm bigger (diameter that is, so, 1mm all around if you get me) because the d-pad will be pivoting side to side, as opposed to separate buttons moving up and down. You can achieve this and still keep the lip intact.
I'm confident that the d-pad would stay in place even without the lip. But, it will be there for good measure.
