Is there an app etc that would allow me to control the GP2X via VPN so I can have it change music etc while I am at my desk at work?

Plan is to hook it upto the hifi and leave it playing the tunes off a hard drive but occassionally if I want to change a tune etc then I can change it quickly via my desktop? (yes I am lazy)

You don't need a VPN for this to work. You need to activate the built-in webserver and have it connected to your pc as a network device (see wiki for how to hook it to a network).

Set up some portforwarding at your router to direct some port like 8080 to port 80 of the gp2x IP. That should enable your GP2X to be reached from the outside world.

Now you need to figure a php script to do your biddings.

Sounds like what you need is a program that can be controlled via the command line, then you just telnet to it :)

As Squidge noted: your program needs some port for remote control or its a no go. Eighter controlled by command line, listening for commands on a network/unix port. Or you have to resort on some tool which stimulates input much like the dreaded macro recorders on windooze.

MPD?

AWESOME! Thanks dude!

Actually, that's an mpd client that runs on the gp2x. You would be wanting the actual daemon which is included with ommpc2x....

If you get that up and running and have your gp2x on your network, you should be able to access and control it from any desktop mpd client.

For clients take a look here...

If you're running windows...

I'm a bit confused by these MPD clients the web ones especially. You access the music etc via the web interface and it plays it on the computer you are accessing. I'm looking for it to change the music that is playing on the actually GP2X. This will do that correct? or does it do both?

You will start mpd on the gp2x. Then you can either run a client on the gp2x and control mpd or you can run a client on another machine that can connect to the gp2x and control mpd. That is what you would be doing with any of the web clients.

Ah ok but whats the deal the web clients being able to stream the tracks through the browser is that extra functionality?

Oh, I didn't understand the question. Yeah, I would guess so. Using pulseaudio or some of the other output options mpd is able to stream back over the network... Unfortunately, this is not possible at this time on the gp2x... Something I haven't look into at all...
