So I'm getting my Pandora soon and I wanted to know is there a way to buy a data plan from one of the companies like ATAT and use it through a wifi box on the Pandora? This should be obvious but I wanted to know how well this worked for others?

If I understand your question properly, then yes. Some 3G adapters are known to work with the Pandora. I can't offer any personal experience, though.

I use a "MiFi" device (basically a pocket-sized router with 3G and HSDPA support, which runs from a rechargeable battery with a six-hour or so life). It works over WiFi, so it works exactly as you'd expect - the same as connecting to most other networks via WiFi. :p

Well we use ATAT do you think I should get a MIFI box? I was also wondering if 2GB a month is not enough? I mean I obviously would not be using it for gaming on the Pandora but surfing the web, how quickly does 2GB run out?

also, many smart phones these days provide a wifi signal from the phone, and there are guides how to tether off the iphone if thats what youre using, but only through USB, i dont think anybody was successful tethering over bluetooth with iphone

My experience is that this depends entirely on your usage patterns. My "MiFi" device has a 1GB-per-month cap, but because I only use it for travelling and emergencies, I usually never get remotely close to this limit.

If you do find yourself using too much bandwidth (I'm having to use my "MiFi" device a lot at the moment because I'm in the process of switching ISPs, and my useless former ISP cut me off early even though they were supposed to provide coverage until the switchover date next week), turning off images and using something like Flashblock in order to block Flash content unless you click on it in order to view it helps with this a great deal - I only used 15MB yesterday instead of 100MB or so.

Thats because iphones are highly overrated ;-) I've yet to encounter a Nokia I can't tether via bluetooth :)

Thats exactly what I have done with my Nokia N97 mini. I keep it clipped to my belt, for the most part then I use a script on the pandora to turn on bluetooth (if need be) and connect to the net through a simulated dialup connection.

I have a 1 GB data plan on my mobile. I tend to use it only when I'm away from home, and do anything bandwidth intensive on the ADSL connection when I am at home... I rarely come anywhere near hitting my limit.

I find that a phone works really good, just get a dataplan for it and thether it via bluetooth. (in case of need charge the phone with the pandora using usb cable) and you've got the perfect mobile browsing, Phone in your pocket pandora on the net!

I have a Pantec matrix I don't think I can get web on that thing it is over 2 years old.

i never tried a MiFi box, i think Prometheus is a better advisor on that field

honestly, i think they will behave much the same, it will depend on your 3G provider.
Conversely, I've never tried Bluetooth (it's a technology that serves no purpose in my life, and I am highly unlikely to ever use it with any device  ), so I can't compare either.

This said, my thinking is also that they're likely more-or-less the same - it just comes down to personal preference and whether the device you're thinking of going with is as flexible as you need it to be*.

*(I went with the "MiFi" device because I have no need for a telephone, and I planned to use it with several different devices. For me, personally, for example, a USB solution would have been inflexible and wouldn't have integrated itself into my life in a useful fashion. Everyone's mileage will vary, of course! :p )

i prefer myself a 3G modem, it drains more battery, but no strings attached

They have those too and they are cheaper than Mifi but how do I know if the current version that ATAT has will work on the Pandora or not?

I would agree that in function, they would be very much the same... in terms of ease of setup/use mifi would be easier... Network Manager will handle the wifi connection easily, whereas my bluetooth setup required custom scripting. (though of course I am happy to share)

A consideration for me is that my phone doesn't have any easy way to share internet via wifi that I could find. (not that I looked very hard, given that I already had bluetooth tethering working)

OTOH I've gotten the impression that the bluetooth radio uses less power than the wifi radio. in which case it would be better for battery life. Please note however that I have no factual basis for this impression, so I could be completely wrong about that! :)

For me it was as simple as natural progression... When I started using mobile broadband it was because it was there on my phone and I was able to derive some geekish pleasure from the accomplishment of using my phone to go online while being no-where near my home ADSL connection rather than a particular need for internet at the time. As such, the idea of getting a separate device for the purpose of getting mobile broadband now seems clunky and inefficient, since it would mean that I would need to carry a third device with me.

Again, your mileage may vary. :)

Would a wireless USB N based device work faster than regular wifi? I'm trying to get the connection as fast as possible for a VNC client.

i can confirm bluetooth pan tether on jailbroken 3g iphone using MYWI

yes, a Linksys AE1000 N wifi takes full advantages of bandwidth, VNC works nicely, i use it very often

Jey123456 (who ported the specicic driver) seems to get 40-50 megabits out of his connection
Did you mean this one? USB N Device Amazon

Cause it seems sticking out of the pandora sideways might be a bit odd.
