15th Libre Software Meeting, Meet the Openpandora community

Hi all,

Yesterday I went to a conference about "ARM devices and your freedom".

Speaker was Paul Kocialkowski, from the Replicant project (a fully free software Android distribution).

He seemed quite knowledgeable about ARM in general, and the issues people have with proprietary hardware and binary blobs on that architecture.

Should we get in touch with him ? Maybe he could give us a hand with sourcing "better" hardware for the Pyra and / or finding open source drivers ... ?

Cheers,

Magic Sam

Not sure how he can source us "better" hardware, EvilDragon contacted all the big players. Does this guy have inside sources with the manufacturers?

The finding better drivers part of magic_sam's proposal perhaps would be more directly useful just at the moment, and I don't have anything against letting him know about the project and getting him in touch with key players if he/they want.  If he can help us find drivers and work around glitches in binary blobs then he sounds like he might be worth having on board, if it's interesting for him too.

I don't know if this guy is acquainted with manufacturers, but I guess we could easily find out. I didn't mean Pyra's hardware will be "bad". Actually I'm really happy with that OMAP 5 solution. What I meant was, maybe that guy could help us "working around" the issues we could have with the lesser documented / free software parts of the Pyra...

These are just some random thoughts anyway, nothing important ;)

Cheers,

Magic Sam

I've just sent him an email. Let's wait and see now :)

I love those Pyra pictures.

There is no video of ED's talk, as stated previously, correct?

Yeah, also the touch of the 3D-printed prototype case has a nice feeling.
