For me Rockbox has always been great, its a little wonky to use because it is supposed to be used as a OS. I used it for a long time on an Ipod Nano 2g.
As an application on the desktop I like to use Deadbeef.
As far as I know, they will work no problem as long as the system is built to work with 3.3 volts instead of 3.7 volts.
I think currently LiFePO4 batteries are still a little rare, but they are becoming more common.

LiFePO4 batteries come in the same forms of packaging as LiPo batteries. Only difference is a slightly lower nominal cell voltage of 3.3v (LiPo= 3.7), and slightly lower capacity. However, the oxygen(?) bonds are much more stable and this makes the battery much safer.

I think the top section should only have the LCD, and everything else should be in the bottom. Was there a particular reason the wifi antenna was in the top?
Wow that's pretty cool, seeing that there are only about 3000 out and probably around 15 000 - 20 000 people that know of it and are interested, that's a pretty rare occurrence.
