GMenu2X is a very very good alternative frontend for the gp2x/wiz/caanoo. It supports overclocking, sound volume setting, touchscreen, etc. GMenu2X allows you to create direct links for your games & applications so that you can directly launch them without having to browse through all the filesystem manually, resulting in a better user experience.

Get it here: http://dl.openhandhelds.org/cgi-bin/caanoo.cgi?0,0,0,0,7,500

Status:
no overclock support yet (will be in future versions)
no battery monitoring (will be in future versions, if supported)
gp2xmenu is like the wiz, it does not look at the autorun script, so gmenu2x does not get loaded after applications quit

Installing RIGHT NOW.
Thanks, I've been looking forward to this. :)

I hope that Gmenu2x gets reloading support in the future somehow, I guess the GPH firmware devs would have to implement it themselves.

Thanks, and good luck. :)

I'm really starting to get some good use out of my Caanoo now, with OhBoy, Mame4all, and Battle Jewels, Pattisier and Propis.
And Gmenu2X makes it into a neat little package.
Fun times.

Just so everyone knows a work around the reload problem is to replace gp2xmenu with a script of the same name that loads gmenu2x. You can rename/move the gp2xmenu if you want to save it.

How is that done? I thought the Caanoo doesn't have a user-accessible NAND.

I was thinking, would it at all be possible to write a launch script on a per-game basis that commands it to load gmenu2x on quit?
That way I'd be able to at least force things to reload gmenu2x, for a few of my favourite apps.
I'm not all that familiar with the process, it's been a while.

Okay i made a ini file with script to launch gmenu2x from the apps folder i have done a quick iconset to so now when it exits back to default menu just go and fire it up from apps folder like you do a normal game this will save you powering the device off please find it in the archive enjoy.

Ask them to fix it on Wiz too if they can.

Thanks for the port! I've always loved the look of Gmenu and hopefully we'll be able to have it auto boot in the future.

That's cute, if you lock the Caanoo, it sets the clock down for the selected app.
Likewise pressing the home button sets the clock up.

Not that it does anything.

Is it normal, that it takes so long to load? After the Caanoo logo vanishes, I have about 20 seconds a black screen, before gmenu2x appears.

eum the nand IS ACCESSIBLE !

you just have to telnet to the canoo, i copied files from the nand to my sd card, the only thing i haven't tried is to check if it has write access, which i guess it does since there are probably config files somewhere on it, even if it doesn't and it's mounted read only, you can remount it, how else could they do a firmware upgrade ?

so the gp2xmenu replacing thing should work.

I have this on the dingoo , very nice

On the dingoo i download a pack where every emulator, game and app is in the 1 pack with all config files so its ready to go without messing about.

So im not sure how to make Configuration files! iv had a look on the GMenu2x site and went to the Configuration section but its for the gp2x!

Could someone do some Configuration files for all the existing emulators on the caanoo please? then i could copy whats done for the games and other apps :)

Would be good actually to have all files in 1 place to be downloaded .... hint hint

cheers paul3100

Paul3100, you can make links to individual programs manually by pressing II to bring up a menu and "Add link"
Then you navigate to the GPE file you want to link to, in whatever section you want to add it to, very easy really.
If there's a .PNG file of the same name it'll link it, otherwise you have to link it yourself.
