Win A Pandora

we just need someone to step-up with non-profit status that we can use.

I've come to the conclusion that there is absolutely no way we can associate a prize with donations. Not without registering it as a raffle (pretty difficult when it's international) and paying a trailer full of cash to a lawyer up front. I think this needs a whole new approach.

How about a game design competition? It won't bear fruit in the way a coding comp will, but maybe we just need to put those expectations aside, have some fun, and give some lucky sod a Pandora already.

Just to be clear: Just design? Not actual coding? Like, a means of getting a design document out there?

Well the point was to include everyone somehow, so yeah don't have too much of a problem... The panel for judging a design compo would have to be very carefully selected, since there is no end result to play...
Maybe some rules of entry could be that anything submitted is agreed to be under the Creative Commons, so that someone from here could actually go on to make whatever the design lays out if they choose so or at least use any artwork/sprites submitted...

Not completely sure about this one... but it's sounding better than the last-resort which is simply "I choose you!".

Gruso, does visa, mc, discover, etc have the same rules about raffles and such? Surely, there is someone here that has a store front that accepts credit cards that could facilitate a legit raffle. We have a credit card machine at our business (family owned) but I don't know how well the whole idea would go over with the old man in charge (dad) :)
There appears to be software to help facilitate raffles but it does seem like "nonprofit" is the keyword everywhere I look and I'm not sure that's what PokeParadox would be doing since he'd essentially be paying someone with the money to develop for the Pandora. On the other hand the money would also be a prize... yea this is becoming a headache and probably just needs simplified into some other kind of competition, I guess. Too bad though, seemed like a good idea - stupid paypal

I had a thought that it might be equally beneficial to the community to gain publicity. Perhaps some kind of competition in which contestants had to lure devs and/or closed source projects to the Pandora or get people to join gp32x (tell them MonkeyChops sent you :D). Whoever gets the most/best people/projects involved with the pandora - wins. This would of course be easier if pandoras were readily available though...

The game design contest is a good idea if some devs actually plan on coding it when its done. Everyone has ideas about a great game and it would certainly make for interesting conversation.

Really, the community would benefit most from a coding competition, I guess its a seesaw of including people vs community benefit, which is more important?

Also, being that its a first batch Pandora now, time is short. Would there be time for a coding competition? I guess what I'm asking is: PokeParadox, what place in the queue is the pandora?

the pandora will be fulfilled from the next set of boards to arrive.

Sadly the legalities extend beyond Google or Paypal. I started looking into other payment options, then I looked into running online raffles in general. In the eyes of the law it all comes back to illegal gambling. With a registered non-profit and some legal work it can be done, but it's a big undertaking.

Like you say MonkeyChops, it comes down to a basic question really - do we go the easy / more fruitful route (coding comp), or do we try to be all inclusive, and get large headaches in the process. :p

You could look at it this way - Poke was given that order slot because he's a strong contributor to the dev scene. Perhaps the best way to honour those intentions is to see that another dev gets it?

looking into it now and the law will depend on the country the lottery is run in.
There does seem to be provisions for what we are doing in the (UK) Lotteries Act 2003 but i suspect the gathering of payment is likely to be the bigger issue.
This is the problem... the internet is global and thus despite it being quite easy to setup a raffle here we are forced to follow the rules of others because paypal etc are based stateside. :p

Gruso you are right, this unit could be very useful in the hands of a dev that maybe does not have hardware yet... Maybe what we should be discussing is who should it go to... Who best could use it to better the Pandora experience for all of us?

So I take it you gave up your spot for this mosschops? I guess that makes your opinion count more than most. What side of the seesaw are you on? What would you like your sacrificed spot in the queue to produce?

I like the idea of a dev getting it that can immediately put it to good use. Perhaps devs could step forward with what they are working on that is held up because of no pandora and we could all vote on what project is most important and/or would benefit the most from having a free pandora. This of course would limit even further the amount of people that would be eligible to get the freebie.

ok..

there are two things to look at ..

1) the law in the country where the "device" would be run. this would more than likely be the UK.
We would be exempt from requiring a lottery reg because we would qualify as a private lottery

(this is taken from a local council doc who you would normally get a lottery license from) : -

Part 2: Private Lotteries
There are three types of “private lottery” which qualify as exempt lotteries:
• A private society lottery is a lottery promoted by members of a society who have been
authorised to run it and people who purchase tickets are a member of that organisation
or are on premises wholly or mainly used for society purposes.

The society being gp32x.de so only member as of a certain date could enter

• A work lottery is a lottery if the promoters work in a single set of premises and everyone
who purchases the tickets also works in the same premises.
• A residents’ lottery is a lottery where the promoters live in a single set of premises and
tickets can only be purchased by people living in the same premises.

All types of private lottery cannot advertise apart from on the relevant premises, e.g. a work
lottery can only advertise on the premises where the people entitled to purchase the tickets
work. In addition, tickets will have to give the name and address of the promoter, specify who
can buy tickets and explain that the rights in tickets cannot be transferred.

We would need to comply with the paragraph above, which shouldnt be a problem.

next issue is payment.

since the paypal/google issue is related to lotteries.

[I'm stupid spammer] a one off subscription to GP32x (if the owner allows) to members as of a certain date and drop the money into a members bank account.
Any new valid subscriber of gp32x.de is entered by their usernumber into a raffle which is filmed by whatever method.

we then have the subscriptions to pay for a prize.

i could neither confirm nor deny that allegation.
i would love to see a bootable a1200 with whdload support and all that jazz but i know that isnt everybodies bag and i am almost as happy with the wonderful work done by John4p's (i think, apols if i have it wrong)work so far. I also do not know if the dev who could do this exists or is available to such bribery also.

myself aside i like the lottery then bounty/compo scenario.

Perhaps we can combine several of the ideas to make one that is more legal.

We could have a design competition with an entry fee, say $5 per entry. You can enter X amount of times, with any design you want. The competition is judged by Skynet to randomly choose a winner. And the winner of the design competition gets themselves a Pandora.

Proceeds from the competition go to a coding competition. That way it isn't a raffle. We have a handful of designs that people think are interesting but maybe don't have the skill to do themselves.

I, for one, welcome our Pandora giving, game inspiring, code competing overlords . . . oh wait, wrong place for this meme. Sorry. An interesting idea/workaround though.

that wouldn't be legal in the uk unless you provided a way to enter free.

I think the idea of a game design competition is a good one.

I enjoy writing homebrew games. I start with an idea (a top-down racer / a pool game / racing through a tunnel) and almost always follow it through until the end (my Yosemite Sam shoot-to-thrust game still might see daylight...)

But my problem is I only code within my capabilities as a games designer - ie I only code as I go along... I don't have a master plan, other than top down racer, pool game, etc etc. Graphic design is outwith my limited ability..

I think I'd enjoy teaming up with someone with a bit of a vision...
