Well, this has been rumored for just about EVER, so no real surprises here. "N" only really works in the handheld sector, so that is where they should have always been putting their focus. This is also the only area where they get 3rd party support, so a handheld that can function in the home with a TV is great(IMO)

I've stated it before, but if they would have been more forward thinking, they would have made the 3DS to stream/connect to the Wii U, and that poor ass tablet would have never been needed, and they could have beefed up the system, offered a standard controller, and would have done way better and CHEAPER! Then, if you have a 3DS you could use it as a controller(like the Wii U tablet for a second screen experience), or stream games as most handheld devices now offer.

Of course, they are always two steps behind the industry(and that's a generous estimate), but they may finally be doing something that plays to their strengths. Sadly, this is "N" after all, so even if it looks good in thought, or on paper, they will do some dumb ass shit the ruins it, but I'll wait and see. Things like region free, and a proper account system that allows for games to be shared are a must, but a wildcard where these clowns are concerned.

There have been many rumors for awhile about them going back to cartridge, and I just never understood how that would be possible for a home console, but now that idea is making more sense. I'm curious, but I think any and everyone will be until all the details are given.

Cartridge actually do start to make sense again. A WiiU game is at most 20-22 GB. If space was a worry, I'm sure they could make any HD game less than 16GB.

It may still be a bit expensive but not that much. A rewritable crappy 16GB microSD card is 5€ for end users on the market today. I don't know how much cheaper a read-only memory in big quantity would be. Does anyone know ?

I'd buy it if it came without a region lock, or if they'd stop cutting/changing content because of "cultural differences". But that handheld/console hybrid thing sounds pretty interesting...

Nintendo should have never gone 3D ? Nintendo made these 3D games:
Mario 64
Zelda Ocarina
Mario Galaxy

Are you saying that gaming would be better off without these titles ?
They are ok, but I offer the 2D games in those franchises. I am one of those people that prefers things like old and New SMB. My favorite Zelda games are the older ones, with Link's Awakening at the top. The new one has my attention, but I need to play it to see if I really enjoy it.

The big 3D games for me are the recent Metroid ones, and I understand that the reason I love the Prime ones is because it has a FPS feel, and I used to rally be into those back then (I still like the old ones, but get bored with more recent ones pretty quickly). One of my favorite 3D N64 games, Perfect Dark, isn't even a Nintendo title.

Most of my favorite Nintendo games are 2D, and I am drawing a blank naming some 3D ones that I would really miss. Maybe Pikmin and Animal Crossing, and I am not really into those that much.

Imo, its definitely going to be more than a mere hand-held with a base docking unit; if so what would be the point.
Could it have some kind of portable AR experience or something akin to the magic leap or mooted AR wand tech? A scaled down cost effective AR tech thingie with cross interactivity with the base unit- If they could make a portable device with new and unique features that could be availed of on the go then maybe. Look at pokemon go.

Could they cross connect with the mobile phones or offer some interaction for Ninty mobile games, speculation, speculation. Possibly a unified ecosystem, portable, mobile, base unit.

I really wish this to be a superior Xperia Play.
A Nintendo collaboration mobile phone, be it a clamshell or similar to the Xperia Play/PSP Go.
A high end Android phone, with Nintendo cartridge slot for games, and digital downloads available too, and Virtual NES/SNES too, yes please :)
All that can come home and dock into a base unit to provide HDMI gaming on the big telly

ED might lose a Pyra sale. Not really (l prefer something more general purpose), but had it been 5 years ago I would have been even more interested in it.

Uuuh no phone-handheld combo for me please. I'd kill the person who dares to call me while I'm fishing in Animal Crossing...

There is this cool handheld gaming computer called the Pyra that you may not be interested in, then. Many of the people buying them want phone capabilities.

They can have that. I won't. Already got a data-only card to use with the Pyra :)

You could automate your answering-machine to say you are playing animal crossing, and just casually slip in a threat of violence.

More things in one was always the direction of handhelds.

I'll just keep my instant-communication-with-people device somewhere close and my games-and-delayed-communication-with-people device closer :D

There's a lot of recent talk that suggests there's gonna be fantastic third party support early on & that they will be launching with LOTS of favorites (a new Metroid would = instabuy for me!) ..apparantly 'lessons have been learned' from the 3DS/WiiU launches.. time will tell I guess & all pie in the sky atm, but the more I hear the more desperate I am to get some definitive details.

What are the sources of this talk? It will be lovely if that is the case. Not sure how much that would translate into additional sales unless some of those third party titles were exclusives.

We already know their franchises can bring in some money, and you and I are far from alone in wanting a new Metroid. I think launching with Smash Bros, Mario, Zelda, and Metroid would make units fly off the shelves. Throw in a Mario Kart and New SMB that winter to boost holiday sales. Maybe combined with support from third parties they can gain back some respect and return to actually competing with the other two.

Nintendo have stated that they will have Zelda, Pokemon and Mario games within the first six months, but have not yet hinted at other franchises. Pokemon could just be a port of Sun/Moon and obviously Zelda is BOTW. So maybe only Mario will be completely new, unless it's an enhanced port of one of the older Mario games, or a new Mario Galaxy game. It might even be Colour Splash, so potentially no actual new games at all then :p

I'm eagerly awaiting Pikmin 4 which Mr Myamoto stated was almost done...

But yeah, sucker like I am, I'll probably grab an NX on launch day.

No 3rd parties are going to support the NX unless "N" is paying them to do so, or it's some indie titles, or some quick crap ports(like the Wii U got at launch).

There has been no major changes that I've seen since Iwata's passing, so unless some HUGE plans are going on behind the scenes, which is doubtful, as most major 3rd parties have stated a "wait and see" attitude.

Now if this a hybrid of sorts, and the main focus is on the handheld side, they will get the same level of 3rd party support that the DS & 3DS saw, which has been pretty good, so I'm hopeful on that front, but if this is a straight up console, 1st party titles will be the order of the day(which has been the norm forever), and make sure you understand that going in.
