Gba Emu

just to make things easy :) :

4 Megabytes = 32 Megabits
8 Megabytes = 64 Megabits
16 Megabytes = 128 Megabits

just make megabits :8 and you have megabytes.
and its not correct that every gba rom is 4,8 or 16 megabytes, the dumpers (flashers) just can dump in those sizes, but on pc you can delete the space via a few tools or with a hex editor.

of course but as said before no commercial roms work for now...only a few demos can work with the current release...
a pack of working rom is available.

see you

Cool thats quick progress. I'll wait till some commercial ones run. BTW I have no program knowledge but how come u can't make the game run off the smc? why does it have to be in ram? Is it possible to make the emu act like a gba and play it off the smc?

If its not possible to run them fast directly from the SMC, then the GBA emu is essentially worthless for all practical purposes, sure you can play a couple games here and there, but almost all of the 4MB games are snes remakes, kiddie games, or tetris clones.. I have about 50 GBA games and 3 of them are 4 MB, all the great ones are much larger, what a waste. :(

Dont tell me im gonna have to buy a zodiac for gba emulation :(

Gba roms can be "trimmed" down. to make them smaller then 4 4MB, and also, could zip support be taken into consideration?

All code to be executed by the processor must be in ram. You could load parts of the files from smc into ram, and then throw them out when you need to load more but have now room, but all you'd end up doing is crippling the emulation as it constantly reads from the smc. So, even if it was done, the resulting game would be unplayable.

The way tha GBA does it, is that a GBA gamepak is simply regarded as read only memory, and so can be executed directly. This method is several hundred times faster than the SMC interface on the GP32.

Also, zipped games must be unzipped into memory before being playable. So your still stuck to 4mb after unzipping.

So yes, a port to the Zodiac is the best thing - 32mb of ram is perfect for GBA emulation.

Zip support wouldnt make any difference, because when its loaded it would be uncompressed so the game can access it, thus taking its full size in memory. Still with the 4 MB limit.

And rom trimmers rarely get more than about 100K off of the size of the rom unless is was an overdump, nothing that makes any huge difference.

So what, really, is the point in making a super fast emulator, that cant run 90% of the games due to memory restrictions?

Bcause i rule....

jk

ll development in this scene is good.

Even "he: the worst game ever"

No offence to the auther

Is the author actually checking the amount of available memory and checking if the selected rom will fit during the loading proccess? Or is he automatically rejecting over 4 MB roms?

What I mean, is, if we did the 32 MB RAM update, would the program detect that extra memory an let you load the larger roms in, or would the default > 4 MB rejection still exist?

hmmm.... A ram upgrade might let us do this (and someone could edit the emu a bit to accept that hey, There's more ram to work with! And let larger roms load)

Of course the leonard rom and the video works, read the docs. And why could it not support sound?

There is an amazing amount of mis-information on this thread.

Perhaps you should read what the author said instead of being so negative? He will be able to get >4MB roms working but it will require a bios flash. But by all means, go buy a Zodiac, with that attitude you would fit nicely into their community.
