B.o.b. Cradle

looks awesome, i would definatly buy it.
how do you plan to attach it to the gp2x? i mean just the ext-socket isnt enough i think. perhaps something that goes in the screw sockets would be the best.
another thing, what about one of those laptop mice replacement things (this button in the middle of the keyboard) or a trackball?

If you need a source for a trackball, www.sparkfun.com has a mini one for USD 5.95. If you press the ball, it acts like a click.

Thanks, if my current supplier dries up I will look at using Sparkfun, cool site, I like the idea that they will bulf produce pcb and other things, may need that if this device works the way I plan.

I get them for $3.00cdn right now *need to buy 10 at a time, so I bought ten, enough to make ten of these devices first run, they will be prototypes, expesive, but so far so good. Have it working frankenstien, now to use circuit layout prg to minimize the board, do proper traces, etch a few boards, test them, go from there... la la la.. it's kewl

thanks again for the excellent link.

It looks cool, have you thought about using 4 AAA batteries? I have been using 4 AAA NiMH 1000mAh batteries straight into my USB devices/hub with a small filtering circuit and it works perfectly.

4aaa, some litho-ion recharable packs I have laying around too, even hought of making a cell bay and offering different *beds* so people could use 9volt, AA, AAA, C, D whatever they desired. even solar panels *I have tons layin around, just did it to see if it worked, works...*

Being NiMH they should handle any number of devices without moving parts and likely even would run a 2.5" hard drive, possibly with a capacitor to aid in spin-up.
Hmmmm... still looking at alrenatives, hamsters in wheels hooke dto tiny enerators.

I personally want my USB to be across the back at the top next to the SD slot, and fit 2 AAA batteries per side in a "Sega Game Gear" style, I think that would be the best in terms of reliability, of course I couldn't have a keyboard that way ;).

I have now five different designs, one looks like a Backbery cradle with a keyboard, two look liek the present design I put online (one with and without a keyboard) the others are actually different backs to the unit itself, you unscrew the entire backing, and replace it with my desing, givign you usb on top, one on either side of the sd slot, with svideo out and an extended battery bay to hold eight AA batteries, yes it will be heavy like ka ka, but it will be a brute. we'll see how that one developes aftet this first one I am working on. Heck, I wan tto build in a mini drive.... I love the gp2x! Woot!

Noo!! Someone stole my dream and is living it!

I have been suggesting this since I heard of USB host and/or HDD support.

I am glad you actually plan to make it.

Is one of the backs you are producing going to have 4 AA or 3 AA support?

Oh, I see 8 AA, hmm. I could take a 2.5" or 1.8" 20-60GB HDD instead of half those batteries.

as long as you are going THAT big, try using D cells (10,000mAh NiMH are out there, and maybe Alkaline D cells could power it in a pinch.) and packing everything between them :).

Are you designing the back to be fully modular, IE one single back replacement and then different size and cell number battery trays?

I skimmed this, so correct me if this has already been mentioned, but why not build in a charger so you never have to take the batteries out?

That is a NO.

Too dangerous...

How is it too dangerous? It is possible. Not right now, first haveto get prototypes out and make it work, then enhance, enhance, enhance. (Cell phoens charge their batteries once you plug them in, same circuitry canbe utilized to charge the nihm batteries in one of my designs) Never say never, just not right now.

Dreams are shared, everyone has similar dreams, some act upon them quicker than others, we all can live the same dreams.

Back is fully modular to take whatever you want. AA pack, AAA pack, different cells, it's all open. It's on the plans, not a priority until I get at least one version with a keyboard workign and one without, and go from there. there is sooo much that can be aded to it, just how strong are you? D cells woudl be awesome, but Heaavy! (Might have to make a monopod fitting for the unit)

Thanks! ~Cr8tive Leo

Perfect, I don't think I could design it better myself!

D-cells are no problem (I wasn't exactly weak before, but I just started a job unloading the truck and moving/stocking merchandise at Target, 5 nights a week. Two D-Cells wouldn't faze me :)).

I also would like to investigate a possible "Wearable PC" concept. If you removed the battery pack and put it on your belt, then hung the empty GP2X (possibly in a special case without buttons for weight savings) on your head you could have a cool PC. Then if you could get the TV-Out to go to a second 3.5" LCD for your other eye you could play around with depth-perception in 3D :D, I was just thinking about it that is all.

Oooh, or just an option for 2 AAA batteries with capacitor/filtering circuit and a jack for an external D-Cell pack so you can keep playing as you move around and switch power sources :).

Here is an idea I already did (grinning) Where I work we have battery belts for our ENG cameras... nice big heavy recharable belts for big SOny DVC cameras.. last for hours. Just plugged it in (with a bit of circuitry) and it goes, mind you, the belts are at least 20lbs but man... you could use it non stop for a week. (or more) muuuahahhaaaa.. but that is my evil world domineering self coming out.

Thanks for all the support, will post pics as the units take shape...

This must be like my 5th post or something, but I just wanted to wish you the best of luck in this project, you have definetly got my attention and support.

I think this would be a great attachment. I have always said the 2X needs more applications. It is a great gaming device but it is lacking in the PDA functionality. The ext port and linux give this device to be a universal portable for all your needs. Now we need devs to start backing your device if it ever comes through.

Thanks for your support. I've gotten moreideas and more projects thought of too. Must concentrate on this one.

I think the final bob design from gamepark is going to attach in a similar way. Keyboard is an excellent addition though.

:D

Now all it needs is a way to be powered from AAs or AAAs, and it'll be awesome!

EDIT: Man, oh man. I really hope they decide to release it mid-August. My birthday is mid-August, and that would be one of the best presents I could possibly think of for this year! I just hope they do the design right and leave enough room for that little rubber door.
