Personally, i'd love to see someone make an RTS. I don't care if the characters are just different coloured pixels, we need some real-time strategy. Right now, i'm hearing people say "So, what can the GP2X do that the so and so handheld can't?" and i'd simply reply: RTS games baby B)

But i'm happy with whatever we're given, we should all show a little more appreciation for all the hard work these coders put into their games. Right now though, PSX emulation is sounding better by the week.

*emulator fanboy says*

You can try Dune on the Mega Drive :D

But really, you can! Never played it myself though.

One day someone will make a homebrew game that blows any 10 year old emulated crap out the water, and the emu-fanboys will never know.

Why wouldn't the "emu fanboys" know? I don't think there are too many that only play emus. If something came out better I think we would all like it. Gamez is gamez.

I can't imagine an RTS working without a touchscreen... Besides, the Zodiac already has two very nice RTS titles and even the DS has got Lost Magic now. I'd rather see some simple but innovative arcade action on the 2X. There are many things you can do with visuals, music and gameplay, even if the controls are simple.
Maybe we could use a homebrew 2D physics engine everyone can use. That might inspire people to make some cool games... Like clones of Loco Roco, Bike or Die, Gloop or maybe even something original. ;)

This is getting silly.

In the time in this you just can't get a professional looking game done and not for 5 grand. And homebrew, to look any way good looking, takes an awful long time (E.g Stepmania, now thats a professional looking game, but lord did it take alot of time).

In my opinion, the best thing that could come out of this is a GBA emu.

Well, thats what I want.

I think this whole thing is just getting out of hand, and I don't think Freddy here is being as harsh as everybody thinks.
I disagree. Case in point:

Ok, apparently a little more info was made available about this last friday... see:

http://www.gamasutra.com/php-bin/news_index.php?story=9671
http://www.pocketgamer.co.uk/news.asp?c=91...2863108&sec=&t=
http://www.pro-g.co.uk/news/09-06-2006-2960.html

Still not clear: what rights if any GPH gets to the results (for example, distribution), and whether ports of games from other platforms or open source projects are allowed/encouraged.

New info: "A panel of leading gaming experts, including Duncan Harris of Edge, will then judge each entry based on its innovation, creativity, marketability and usability"

I assume from that that they are looking for something original, though it isn't clear whether an emulator would be allowed.

Hopefully there will be some more information before it's too late to start working on a large project.

I'm thinking of taking a shot at it though...

I'd really like to know why there has been no real substantial announcement of how this is going to work; the deadline is getting closer quite quickly and yet there's been no real details provided about entries and other vital aspects-- why no post on the forums or anything? Will entrants have to sign over their creations to GPH/GBAX (the mention of 'marketability' is concerning.) It's doubtful and probably more refers to the possibility of them being picked up as commercial titles to sell like Vektar, but it's still a crucial detail that needs clarification, among many others.

I definitely want to enter.
And yes, we need more data on this.

BTW Epicenter, who drew the banner for Stargazer? It rocks.

GPH said that it will officialy do an announce of this contest the 26 jun, stay tuned ;)

it seem that GPH not even know that people even know of the contest ;)

That's official now ;)

Hmm, the information in this announcement is hopelessly vague. Just pointing this out because perhaps one of their english-speaking associates such as craigix or evildragon can fill in the holes...

No indication is given as to what makes one entry better than another (always important for a contest to know what the contest is for).

No information is given about whether GPH will make the entries available for download. Can we assume from this that they will not? It looks that way to me, but I'm not sure.

They divide the entries into two categories, "Commercial games" and "Open source". What's the purpose of this categorization? What about a non-open-source utility?

Is a port of an existing proprietary program allowed? It appears to me like the answer is yes, but it isn't clear.

Is a port of an existing open source program allowed? On the one hand it says it should be "created by yourself" but on the other hand it says if it's open source you should submit information about that. I have no idea what this means in terms of what's allowed.

Apparently there will be more information "around June 26th".
