hmm, afaik dmb is availible pretty much evryware in germany, not sure through. at least dab is.

DVBT is available (is that the same as dab?), dmb isn't (except for some experimental test broadcasts in southern Germany).

Why the f**k would you want a $150 MP3 player?
Because that's how much good MP3 players cost anyways???
Eh? I can buy one of those "smallest MP3 player in the world" thingies for £40 here, with 1GB of storage already on there! I'm sure I could get a good MP3 player with 64MB memory a whole lot cheaper than $150. And a lot smaller.

DVB-T = Digital Video Broadcasting - Terrestrial
DAB = Digital Audio Broadcasting
DMB = Digital Media Broadcasting, which covers both.

Apparently, UK trials of DMB are scheduled to start this year. People in Oxford have DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting - Handheld) as a mobile phone trial.

No WiBro though.

One that also plays movies, homebrew games/emulators and with e-book? :)

How do you know there won't be a GP2X mini?

Monkey see, monkey do you know. Maybe GPH won't want to be left out giving people red eyes and headaches either. Maybe they will beat them all and have a 1/2" screen for all of you tiny hard to see screen lovers ;)

Only 64mb?? What happened to that SD card slot???

If the system does come out, I have a feeling lack of real force in homebrew and emulator development would kill it. CPU-wise, it's on par with the Gp2x, and yet it apparently has less RAM? The Gp2x already has a fairly low amount of usable RAM if you take into consideration the very slow access to the upper 32 MB of it. A GPU won't accelerate emulators, you need to actually EMULATE the rendering engine in the console on a normal processor, you cannot usually (accurately) simulate the same experience via a GPU. PSX and N64 emulators that use PC video hardware are using a nasty hack of sorts to achieve higher resolutions and ease CPU load, etc.-- but it's rare and horribly resource-intensive. Simply put, it won't do any good on the XGP.

As for Quake 3. The game relies so heavily on floating point code, and it has such an obscenely high RAM requirement when viewed from a portable standpoint, that the concept of it running at higher than 5 FPS seems exceedingly absurd-- even if they DID rewrite it to operate with whatever (probably proprietary and poorly-documented) GPU they pick for the machine-- which would be a fairly heroic undertaking (... I don't see it happening, is what I am getting at.)

The GP2x was a messy rushed design/launch, but it worked-- far from perfectly but it worked. The XGP stacks the same poor odds of success even higher against GamePark by trying to sell a more expensive unit that's incompatible with all their other hardware, will likely have a meager-at-best homebrew community, and making a bunch of unfulfillable promises..

If that's so then it's weaker in the cpu power than MMSP2 in the GP2x (it has only one cpu) but will be much stronger in the floatpoint maths (as it has vector units for that) and 3d graphics.

There is also a wavetable synthesiser in the VRender3D but it is very plain as it doesn't have filters or effects.

The advantage of VRender3D is support for the ddr ram so it will have a higher bandwith available for it. But I doubt it will make its cpu much faster because effects of caching. More bandwith is mandatory for the 3D part as it's really heavy on it (the z-buffer, alphablending - all these eats it fast).

So 200MHz clock for cpu, 100MHz (probably) for chipset and coprocessors and 32bit ddr bus for memory. Around 800MB/s of memory bandwitch (2x more than in the GP2x). The Voodoo1 has the same amount of it with 50mpix/s fillrate. So expect somewhat worse perfomance than 50mpix/s (as other parts of system will need to access memory too). Anyway not bad for a screen at 480x272 but not great either. The PSP is more powerfull in that regard even with inflated specs by Sony.

Quake3 should run probably but not too good. The Q1/Q2 should fly as well the Unreal1.

The VRender3D is made on the same silicon process as the MMSP2 (0.18um, 1.8V CMOS technology) so don't expect longer battery lifes.
(expect rather shorter times when using its 3d capabilities as 3D is really processing intensive).

Assuming the XGP will be indeed using the VRender3D don't worry about your GP2x. Unless you want more 3D games the XGP will not be universally better than GP2x. It might ends even worse for the emulators as it's lacking the second cpu what GP2x has.

I hope the homebrew support won't dwindle on the GP2X because of the XGP series. It is a cool retro homebrew system and will get better with better community developed firmware. It is so new and already some great emus are out. Ok so it is not perfect but nothing is. The XGP may be better because of memory bandwith but not as good because of the odd res and analog stick. The mini may be cool because of the portability but if you like having a larger screen then the Gp2X is nice. We haven't even scratched the surface yet with the GP2X. I think there could be some fantastic stuff for it if we stick with it.

It needs more bandwith for 3D accelerator not cpu.

All of these machines are using the Arm9 based cpus. The framebuffer formats will be the same. The amount of memory is also similar. If it's true that XGP is using the VRender3D from MagicEyes then there will be some hardware register compatibility as well.

Then most people are using middleware such as SDL for theirs apps and games.

I don't unterstand the XGP hysteria...

Neither do I but there are 4 current topics between news and general on this and they are the most active.

People get real bored real fast I guess. Buy the GP2X, play with it a few weeks... NEXT ;)

?? I am not saying that there won't be a GP2X mini.

I am just thinking that, if the xgp mini is gp32 compatible, I would buy the console anyway. I really like the design of this prototype, and come on, you probably get a gp32 with sd card support and a good screen (I guess the screen will be much better than that one from the gp32 Blu).

I don't have to buy any. I have many laying around. It makes it all very convenient :)

Fine then... why not buy an inexpensive, small, SD card MP3 player? I know where I can get one for £20, but you could get one for £30 that'd probably be better than the XGP Mini for MP3 playing (battery life etc.)
