Replacement Interface

That looks nice. You do gain more space for catagories with that layout. That layout still seems the most efficient to me.

Plus with scroll wrap it would be fast to navigate.

Lets say you were at SquidgeSNES and wanted to get to MAME. Instead of pressing right a bunch of times one move left and you would be right there.

Cool, one thing I would look at is allowing the icons to be smaller and have more of them. I can see eventually having LOTS of apps. Looks nice though.
I agree, I think they should be 32x32 seeing as that's the icon size of the menu at the moment and I'm pretty sure it was the size fore gp32 icons too

Don't critique it, I know that not everyone would be able to read the fonts. Just showing off what I'd like :p

I love Tebb's it looks sexy and simple at the same time

Have you guys ever used XBMC (XBox Media Center)? If the GP2X had a menu that had the look/functionality/skinability/usability of XBMC, I don't see how anyone could complain. It's even set up for use with a remote or joypad (not mouse).

I think these screens are a bit old, but you can get the idea.

With it, you can do things like start an MP3 playlist, then come to the main menu and start a photo slideshow. It's a bit of a dream, but it sure seems like people are throwing out their ideal-world ideas.

EDIT: Here are some more ideas of newer versions with other skins and such.

I LOVE the Björk font.

If this new interface has full customisation theres no reason why any of the pics in this thread isnt possible.

Look at UnleashX dashboard on the Xbox. It's possible to change almost every aspect even movie clips etc (looks truely awesome)

I like that design. I'd like the top icons to be DIR based and the icon should be placed in the DIR in question. No icon just use a default.

Nice, this thread is slowly perfecting the design.

We also have to keep in mind that the date/time that's present in a lot of examples could never be done on the GP2X until a 'sleep mode' is implemented, and not even after that, because you have to change batteries sometimes, thus taking away any power that the GP2X needs to keep track of time.

It's interesting how the Hanz idea has morphed to look and function exactly like DaveC's. I was getting a little giddy last night when the idea of having both setups was mentioned. That's why I like the XML idea. One problem with that, though, is that there are limitations of XML, and not every 'sweet looking' effect can be used in an XML menu. I'm also worrying about skinning in XML because I don't know thing one about it. If there are easy ways to switch between menu styles live, skinning by XML-incompetent artists, and the ability to look like Hanz's original idea and/or DaveC's idea, then I'm all for it.

Jupp. That is what I wanna see :)
edit: what about kilroys zLauncher?
Could that be a thing to expand and edit for a new GUI?

Yeah, this is seriously the best one in this thread. I also like parag0n's, but I think it would be neat if you could press a button combination to shift the bars' positions and orientations.

tebb's is gorgeous. although you and i have very different tastes in music :)

personally i don't care where the icons are or how big they are, as long as it's fast, like the way that drmdx's menu is fast (key repeat, quick scrolling). having the items listed straight up and down or in a grid is a matter of taste i guess and a fully customizable menu should be able to do both.

i'm really really excited to see what you come up with parag0n...if it's really malleable enough to change the layout and such then i think you have a decent shot at making *everyone* happy.

edit: just thinking, maybe there should be a variable width/height for the top/side bar? that way something like tebb's with no icons on top is doable.

Still it is list based and sequential. I HATE scrolling though lists and it still only shows 10 entries. It is not bad but still I think matrix navigating is better and allows more icons. Ditch the list and add icons and it would be great.

Actually I came up with the design, paragon re-did the graphics ;)

He did a good job of it though as my original was ugly. The function is the same.

Well we could have it like windows - The user just chooses between list/icon mode. Icons would be especially good to use with pictures and movies(thumbnails required). Also games really dont need a list mode. Other things like music files, ebooks and utilitys are pretty much in need of a good overview via lists.

That kind of list interface is perfect for things like songs. Try fitting the full text of a song into an icon's space and have more than 10 icons viewable ;)
