I'm against it too. Not that I appreciate what he has done for the community by providing his caps, but i think that's not enough for a guru-status. If he becomes a guru, then there are plenty of people who deserve this status-symbol too.
Before DaveC gets the guru, people like theoddbot should be guru.

Theoddbot is not a Guru?

I am suprised, with all of the great code he has written. I agree he should be guru.

... then send Hando a PM, with your reasons for why you think he deserves Guru status. Simple :)

I don't think this thread is healthy, or even a good way to nominate guru's. I don't think its fair on Dave.
I agree with that too.
I don't want him to take this the wrong way or anything. I don't think I have done anything for this community. I don't consider this to be a personality defect or proof that I couldn't I just have never particularly wanted to.
I just think that there are lots of people that are much more worthy of a guru badge. It would be criminal if daveC was too get guru status and yet other people like oopo and theoddbot and plenty other were left out.

Also I really don't think you should hand out the guru badges willy nilly (english for the win).

Nice one goity. DaveC you should use that for your avatar. :D

Criminal? That is harsh, but again I know I am not your favorite member exactly...

I do agree that there are many others that should have guru. But then again if Vimacs was guru once, I don't see myself being that far off from it.

Yeah but Vimacs never really should have been a Guru, he is just part of the oldboy network. (imo)
Leave it out, I wasn't flaming you (and haven't once in this whole thread). I was just saying how unfair it would be on lots of people.

I kind of agree. Part of me thinks I should be a guru as I really do, believe it or not, put alot into this community.

The other part of me thinks that there are others that deserve guru more and I would feel guilty if I had it.

So I don't know either way, whatever. I am just glad this topic didn't turn into the flame war that I expected it would be :)

I always enter these topics too late, that's what I get for living in a completely different timeline to everyone else here...

Anyway *ahem* just pretend I was one of the first posters

"DaveC for Guru!"

i tihnk he might be a bit too hard on people sometimes to be a guru - maybe locking topics and blasting users with modpowers unnecessarily in the future - but other than that, i think he would make a good guru.

You're confusing Moderator with Guru.

and davec with vimacs. ;)

edit: i also think davec should be guru.

i think, the guru-status is coding skill related. and even not every coder has guru status.
being a guru is a certification of a very high level of coding, which not every coder has.

many people are doing things for this community and it's great that they do it. but this has nothing to do with being a guru.
even the team members (ED, hando,....) are doing a hell of a work for this community and are they gurus? no. simply no, because they are not hardcore-coders.

that's the way i see it and maybe there could be a status like "contributor" besides the "guru" and "xtreme team member", but please don't mix these things up.

The whole Guru system is flawed imho. There is no need for it. A lot of the current gurus are in no way as informed as others who are not gurus. But people are supposed to believe what they say more than non-gurus.

No-one can be right all the time no matter how much they contribute- Just look at the comments made by Mr Mirko claiming the second core to be useless.

Saying that, DaveC has provided what I find to be by far the most useful thing in relation to my GP2X experience- the cap. He also helps out, always gives a coherent opinion (whether right or wrong) and helps devs frequently- just look at the credit given by Franxis in the MAME port readme.

If the guru staus has to exist, I think DaveC is a good candidate.

I disagree most (if not all) of our Gurus are Gurus because of technical expertise.
I agree guru status should not exist though.

When I last read this thread earlier today and everybody was all pro-DaveC – I then started thinking what Dave would say when he posted, for some reason I was thinking he would flame all us for how dumb we were for nominating him and give us a rant about why...

I personally doesn't care at all about this guru status. Yes... it'd be nice to have such distinction yet... after all... for me it's enough rewarding that I have a community to show some of my work or research.

At other hand such status can motivate people to get one so they might be working harder for that.

As you see this is issue of balance. I have no idea what should be enough for "guru" or not and for DaveC I have no idea if he is deserving one or not too.

I'm also thinking that trying to make any strict rules would be sick thing as well.

Perhaps good idea could be to add some "gold/silver" bars to the poster's status?
(to reward person for not exactly being a "guru" but what has some kind of achievements?)

As for DaveC his work (the biasing schemes) inspired me to make a time domain filter for stick's events. His constant bitching about the snes transparencies made me interested at trying (succesful at that) making my own fast 2d routines capable of full speed color addition/substraction (among other things). His latest whingeing about the second core not being usable is also starting to irritate me. :p

So you see... it's not that some faults are always a bad thing. :)

I think this whole Guru badge thing is doomed to failure. Sooner or later, so many people on the boards are going to have them they will lose all meaning. Plus I can just see thread after thread popping saying 'He got guru and I havn't yet!?'

There needs to be a rank of about 10 stars (possibly done through images like the guru badges are now), and each time you do something that the community feels is a massive help, you get an extra star. It lets us separate the experts from the gurus then, and will actually mean more to those who have been around longer and contributed more, since the long time members will be ranked higher than those who just got the badge recently (as they should be).

DaveC...he is sort of like the human version of marmite. People either love him or hate him.

:) I loved this quote. Well done DaveC, enjoy your well earned guru status.
