Great! Our custom breakout box for the GP2x (USB/Serial/Audio/Video/JTAG) is working .. and right now i'm watching "Monkey" (yes, as in 'madness') over USB on my GP2X, from my external battery-powered JOBO datatank..

wasn't so easy .. certainly, the EXT port is a noisy brothel .. but looks like its all systems go for building a complete breakout box with all external i/o working for the GP2X ..

now all we need to do is get GPH to turn on USB support in the kernel by default, networking too, and we're all systems go! tonight i play with my Powermates' to get them working with SDL .. woot!

I'll post pictures tomorrow, when i get my camera back .. so stay tuned!

That's sounding pretty interesting. I'll keep an eye on the post and see how it progresses.
Congrats on the work so far.

great news.

an all-in-one docking station/breakout box would be the ultimate accessory for me.

whichever way this progresses, (buy or diy), i'm in!! :D

how hard would it be to introduce a multi card reader into a breakout box?

would it be as straight-forward as - <usb connection> and <external power> to be recognised?

or would we need some funky control module add-on for the kernel (other than the one already posted in the archive)?

Gamepark are making one, it has TV out on it too.
That would imply that GPH are going to enable those features in the official firmware, though they wouldn't necessarily have to enable networking to get a breakout box functional. That's where unofficial firmware comes into it.

I'm just wondering if GPH will get it right first time, and how long before DaveC offers a replacement <insert annoying hardware bit>? :)

Is this a powered breakout box, by any chance? Just wondering, as it'd be very nice to get the features of this whilst at the same time getting full-on TV out and JTAG and such. Not least because it'd essentially realise the possibility of plugging USB controllers into the 2x - and with TV out, that means it really does fall properly into the potential area that are currently occupied largely by Dreamcasts and X-boxes, if I recall correctly, of multi-home console. Except this one you can carry about :)

This is, of course, assuming eventual emulator support for USB controllers, which I imagine may eventually come, but probably in the same sense that the chatboard became a standard on the GP32 - i.e. very very slowly as more and more pick up the required hardware...

This is big, very BIG. The possibilitys would be endless, but most interesting is the use of USB keyboard, mouse and gamecontrollers I think. If GHP is already making something like this it might be better to wait (before u invest alot of money to make one urselfe) But if not, it could be a good oportunity to make a few bucks while contributing to the comunity. Will watch this one with alot of entisipation..

EDIT: sorry for language, me only be simple swede

well, our BoB is here now, and it works! its so great to have 60gigs of Movies to play on the gp2x now ..

Whats really needed now is software: a filemanager to copy from HD to SD, drivers (for powermate, usb-wlan, usb joysticks, etc), and apps that take care of peripheral use ..

Gamepark's docking station will have 3 USB, TV-Out, Serial and 5V in.

Is that so?

If yes then it's fantastic news!!!

It will allow many things what are tiresome if not impossible now.
